In the world's ultimate talent search - where the eyes of a nation are upon the best undiscovered singers in the country, where the audience has the power to make or break you, and where a million-dollar recording contract is on the line, there is only one rule: If you can sing it, bring it.

January 21

We are in Louisville, KY. Who will be through to Hollywood? And who will be next out the door from Churchill Downs!

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY - Churchill Downs

Over 11,000 people are here today!

Tiffany Shedd (18, Cincinnati, OH, HS Graduate) and her parents are the 1st Contestants of the day. They are both proud. She will walk out of there with a positive attitude..but wants the golden ticket.

She sings Mariah Carey, but sounds like Drew Carey. Simon says, "The Good News is you are going to college." She begs to sing again, but it's a no go. Simon: "Imagine 22 horses and a donkey." You wouldn't stand a chance.  And her positive attitude goes out the window with tears and anger. She sings again, and the horses go nuts. And she goes off, again. So much for maturity and positivity.

We have 23 yr old Joanna Pacitti next. She moved to LA on her own. She lost confidence in the last year. Kara recognizes her as an A&M signee, and Joanna blames A&M for it not working out (as asked by Simon). She sings "We Belong" by Pat Benatar. Kara likes her. Yeses all around and she is GOING TO HOLLYWOOD. She cries tears of joy.

Next we see Mark Mudd Jr. He is 23 and has been in 2 car wrecks. He nearly died 5 times. He is distantly related to Dr. Samuel Mudd who fixed John Wilkes' Booth's broken leg after he shot President Lincoln in 1865. He sings White Lightning by George Jones. They didn't like him. Paula said This wasn't the right competition. Simon says, "Wheel of Fortune". Mark said "Be Careful in whatever you do." They felt it was a threat.

Brent Keith Smith is next. He is 28 from Blanchester, OH and sings "Can't Get Enough of Your Love" by Bad Company. He is a traveling musician. Paula liked it. Simon didn't like the song choice. He felt that the song choice should have been emotional. He called it "buskerish" (Busker is a term for subway singer in London.) Everyone didn't like that. Simon is trying to get constructive criticism in while Kara wants to speak. Kara tries to speak, but Simon cuts her off. He eventually says yes, while Kara goes under the table. "Let's both go down" and Paula and Kara engage in something fun. He is a full sweep into the Hollywood Round. He is shaking.

Irene Angueloba butchers Over The Rainbow, Obianujo Omwurah and Wil Heuser butcher other stuff. Ryan Benningfield comes in full face paint. (Simon: Is this show getting weirder every year?) Patrick Warner does an overweight version of Billie Jean complete with Crotch Lift. Needless to say, they dont make it.

Maybe Matt Giraud, a 23 yr old dueling piano player from Kalamazoo MI will do better. He sings "I Don't Wanna Be" by Edwin McCain. Paula likes his different sounding voice. Kara likes him. Simon says he reminds him of Elliott Yamin in season 5. Simon says his problem is he doesn't believe in himself. 4 yeses mean...he is GOING TO HOLLYWOOD. He says, this is big.

Ross Plavsic 26, an after school tutor, calls himself an academic. He arranges Chinese characters for fun. He is been studying everything from Youtube to books...he is nervous before his audition. He explains his Chinese characters thing for fun. He is singing Cara Mia and we are going Mamma Mia this is terrible. They all sing along...and his excuse is the dry air and scratchy throat. We know it's lack of talent. Paula is stunned by Ross sipping through her straw to get lubricated from her Coca-Cola mug. He tries to sing "Love Me Tender"...and he gets the big boot. Paula asks for a new cup and new drink.

But we have 10 Louisville people on their way to Hollywood after Day 1.

Day 2 starts with Alexis Grace from Memphis ...a stay at home mom at 20. She is pursuing her dream since she was 2. She has a 2 yr old daughter and plans to get married to their father who is in military school. She is singing Dr. Feelgood by Aretha Franklin. Randy was pleasantly surprised by the power and difference in her voice. Paula wants her to work on her stage presence, but she likes her. Simon likes her face, while Kara likes her voice. And she is GOING TO HOLLYWOOD!

We see a montage of bad contestants. The judges are tired and homesick. We need someone like...

Aaron Williamson to lift their spirits. He likes to WOOO a lot. He is ready to work and bring it. He says he is "America's Next Top Model". Paula says, "You Watch Tyra". Simon says, "Someone does!" He sings (or with rather incredibly over the top screaming) "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" by CCR. My ears hurt. He seems Angry and is screaming. Ryan is concerned. Randy asks if he always performs this way. Simon says he has to do something with shouting. All 4 no's however. And Aaron is gone.

Next is local girl Rebecca Garcia, who was interviewed by Fox 41 earlier in the day. She has a cheat sheet, which she claims to use because of nerves. She sings "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood. And it doesn't like a very good job. Kara notices she was voted most humorous in High School and claims this was a joke audition. And the room falls silent. Kara feels awful and Paula saves the day by saying that she had not been in any auditions. Simon says not to have a career in music. Kara apologizes profusely for being mean. No's all around.

Will Kris Allen from Conway, AR do the trick? Felicia Barton from Virginia Beach, VA? Ryan Johnson, from Cincinnati, OH? Shera Lawrence from Bowling Green, KY? All 4 get the Golden Ticket! 8 have gotten the ticket from day 2!

Finally we have Leneshe Young, 18, from Cincinnati, OH. She was raised by a single mom and basically homeless. She stayed home to help her mom raise her brothers and sisters. She sings an original song called "Maddie". Very risky, but her voice carries it. Simon loved her and her writing. Randy says she is what they need. And we have 4 yesses all around. She is the last of 19 to get the golden ticket out of 11,000!

Next stop, Jacksonville, FL. For Game Show News Net...This is Jason Block...out!
