Week 1a: With Seven You Get... Golden Grahams
September
22

For seven seasons, we've seen our share of dancing on "Dancing With The Stars," whether good or bad, depending upon the naturalness of the celebrity. This season, we've cranked the electricity of the ballroom to 11, and this time, the lineup card gets better. Let's glance at our field of 13.

Misty May-Treanor (beach volleyball player)
Kim Kardashian (socialite)
Lance Bass (N*SYNC member)
Rocco DiSpirito (chef)
Brooke Burke ("Wild On")
Toni Braxton (singer)
Cody Linley ("Hannah Montana")
Jeffrey Ross (comedian)
Susan Lucci ("All My Children")
Cloris Leachman ("Phyllis")
Warren Sapp (Bucs & Raiders)
Ted McGinley ("Hope & Faith")

DANCE PROS

Julianne Hough (2x champion)
Lacey Schwimmer (So You Think You Can Dance alum)
Inna Brayer (newcomer)
Maksim Chmerkovskiy (5th season with the show)

Corky Ballas (Mark Ballas' dad)
Kym Johnson (6th season with the show)
Alec Mazo (season 1 champion)
Karina Smirnoff (took Mario Lopez to the finals)
Tony Dovolani (6th season with the show)

With 13 stars ready, few dancers have a Utah family affair, and some have that old fire to it, with one former "So You Think You Can Dance" finalist at her first go-round at ballroom. Season 7. The wait is over. The fun starts.....now.

As if you didn't know, each couple will dance 2 routines in 4 ways. Tomorrow will be the mambo and quickstep, but tonight, it's the cha-cha and foxtrot. Expect no blah-blahs and whatnot.

Cody & Julianne will kick the season off with a cha-cha to "Tilt Ya Neck Back" by Nelly & Xtina. (Christina Aguilera, that is)  The only highlight you might see is Julianne doing spins. Now we spin over to the judges for the first comments of the season. Carrie Ann said it came out in full potential, Len said it came out full of confidence and Bruno called him a flash of youth. And in a flash, we get the first check of the scoreboard:

CARRIE: 6
LEN: 6
BRUNO: 6
Total Score: 18
Not a good way to start off the season with a bang.

2nd, Rocco & Karina dance, but we interrupt this program for a news bulletin. In stage rehearsal, Karina Smirnoff, DWTS veteran, has suffered a foot injury. This just in....she shakes off the injury as a fake and does a foxtrot to "Stray Cat Strut" by the Stray Cats. Rocco gets his arm under Karina and she did a 3/4 split with a nice ending, and it paid off for her. But were the judges buying it? Carrie Ann said it was really cute, Len said it had a good attack and Bruno said it was a foxtrot on the brink of chaos. There's chaos on the brink of numbers, and it's heading our way....

CARRIE: 5
LEN: 4
BRUNO: 5
Total Score: 14
Put it in the doggie bag. It's the basement.

Toni & Alec go next as they cha-cha to "Smooth" by Santana w/ Rob Thomas. It was very nice & smooth in my opinion, but were there any bumps in the road for them? Carrie Ann said it was fantastic, Len said it was a good mix of basic & clever choreography and Bruno said it was slinky, sultry & sexy. Super! To the scores:

CARRIE: 7
LEN: 7
BRUNO: 8
Total Score: 22
They take the lead on that score.

And we're ready for Maurice & Cheryl doing a foxtrot to James Brown. Those wraparound arms with Maurice and many more set the tone for this routine. To the judges we go. Carrie Ann said he has to work on those styles, Len said it was wild, wacky & Wonderful and Bruno said he needs to work on his posture in hold. Just remember, Maurice Greene is not a cartoon. Draw the numbers.

CARRIE: 6
LEN: 6
BRUNO: 6
Total Score: 18
They tie for 2nd place.

Brooke & Derek will cha-cha now and she did a balancing act along with a cool ending. How did it go? Carrie Ann said she has an amazing body designed to dance, Len said it was the best dance so far and Bruno called Len's tongue for that hip action. Please hold while we translate the scores:

CARRIE: 7
LEN: 8
BRUNO: 8
Total Score: 23
And they lead by a single point!

Ted & Inna will be up doing a foxtrot to "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys. Inna had a few kicks and that of course, was it. what did the judges know about it? Carrie Ann said he has great potential lines, Len said his footwork was very good and Bruno said it was a very entertaining routine. Where's the scoreboard?

CARRIE: 6
LEN: 6
BRUNO: 6
Total Score: 18
it's now a 3-way tie for 4th.

Lacey & Lance will do a cha-cha to "Jumpin' Jack Flash" by The Rolling Stones. Lance pulled under Lacey and jumped to the floor. Lacey did a crossed-leg rollover and held her leg herself. Lacey hurdled under Lance's leg and both fell on their backs. Now let's wake up with the judges. Carrie Ann said it was hot times 3, Len said it was young & modern and Bruno said it was edgy. And now, the scoreboard:

CARRIE: 8
LEN: 6
BRUNO: 8
Total Score: 22
And it's a tie for 2nd place.

Cloris & Corky are next to tackle a foxtrot. Hmm, she seems old, but she looks like she acts old. Were the judges right? Well, she put up her foot during Len's comments and sat on Carrie Ann's lap asking the fans to vote. what's wrong with her? I know what's not wrong.  The numbers.

CARRIE: 6
LEN: 5
BRUNO: 5
Total Score: 16
And now they take 5th place.

Jeffrey & Edyta take the floor doing a cha-cha fighting off the eye injury to "Play That Funky Music" by Wild Cherry. Jeffrey kissed Carrie Ann's hand at the judges area and Edyta hurried him up to dance. By the end, Jeffrey asked him to come and Edyta kicked her in the butt. Girl Power! On to the judges. Carrie Ann said it wasn't having a great time and Bruno called it "ungainly carnage." Not much of total carnage, but we'll see. Scoreboard!

CARRIE: 4
LEN: 4
BRUNO: 4
Total Score: 12
They're now ahead in last place.

It's Kim & Mark's turn to Foxtrot to "The Pink Panther" by Henry Mancini. Kim threw away her fan and Mark did half a slide through to end it. Let's slide over with the judges. Carrie Ann was happily surprised, Len said it was a bit cold and Bruno said she's a dusky beauty. Scoreboard dawns on them....

CARRIE: 6
LEN: 7
BRUNO: 7
Total Score: 19
And they now take 3rd place.

Doing the cha-cha to "I've Heard it Through The Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye is Susan & Tony.  Both did a swerve move and Tony did arm work to control Susan. She even 2 back dips to close it out. We go to the judges. Carrie Ann said she looked a but frail out there, Len said she needs to throw caution to the wind and Bruno said it was very, very careful. Be careful out there. The scoreboard may hurt you.

CARRIE: 5
LEN: 5
BRUNO: 5
Total Score: 15
Not a good score, but they move into 7th place.

Misty & Maks get ready to foxtrot to "This Will be" by Natalie Cole. It took elegance and grace to get a volleyball player in the ballroom including a pose in the band area at the end. To the judges again. Carrie Ann said she needs to relax it a little more, Len said it had an elegance about it and Bruno said with her shoulders, she'll go a long way. Let's take the shortcut to the scoreboard:

CARRIE: 6
LEN: 8
BRUNO: 7
Total Score: 21
And they're now in 3rd place.

Last to take the floor is Warren & Kym doing a cha-cha to "Do I Do" by Stevie Wonder. Kym almost kicked Warren in the head, ha ha, but that didn't stop them from his weight, er, dancing. We go to the judges. Carrie Ann said he's got great transitions, Len called him a big, bundle of joy and Bruno said big boys can dance. But can they score? Let's find out.

CARRIE: 7
LEN: 7
BRUNO: 7
Total Score: 21
And they tie for 3rd.

Tired? I am. Let's get one last glance at the scoreboard:

23 -- Brooke & Derek
22 -- Toni & Alec, Lance & Lacey
21 -- Misty & Maks, Warren & Kym
19 -- Kim & Mark
18 -- Cody & Julianne, Maurice & Cheryl, Ted & Inna
16 -- Cloris & Corky
15 -- Susan & Tony
14 -- Rocco & Karina
12 -- Jeffrey & Edyta

Well, I hope the first night was great for you, and if not, maybe tomorrow will be more better as one couple won't dance for good. Have you thought of it yet? Find out in 23 hours. Nighty-night.
