August 18-19 - Round of
6: "Gordon Lightfoot"
Due to technical difficulties (specifically my van not
getting to its destination before the show was on that
night as I was moving from Newfoundland to Ontario), I
was not able to see the performance show, but I will try
my best to give a good summary nevertheless!
RESULTS
This week the idols were singing the songs of Canadian
song legend Gordon Lightfoot. As was trumpeted in a CTV
press release, tonight marks the first time ever (in any
"Idol" version around the world) that the Idols
are allowed to bring their instruments on stage with
them. This is done when they are performing Lightfoot's
"Canadian Railroad Trilogy". Jason Greeley starts out on
guitar and Kalan Porter joins in on violin. Next is
Teresa Sokyrka on mandolin, while Elena Juatco is on
piano. Jacob Hoggard and Shane Weibe are both on guitar
on well. They all put in a
solid performance to show tribute to Lightfoot, who is
in the audience. At the end Lightfoot joins them on
stage to comment.
I should say as a side bar that it is a welcomed
presence that Lightfoot brings to the show as he was
very close to passing away not too long ago.
A quick summary from the night before.
Elena sang "Early Morning Rain" and was told by Sass
that she had the best performances on a personal level
so far. Jason chose "Rainy Day People" and Farley said
that it was his type of song. Jacob chose "Sundown".
Zack says that he's "singing like you should". Shane's
choice of "The Way I Feel" gathered a comment from Sass
that she's totally changed the way feel about him.
Teresa, singing "Song's for a Winter's Night" prompted
Farley to comment that she came out of her slump. Kalan
sang "If You Can Read My Mind". Zack can't understand
how such a loud voice comes out of a small person.
As we're now a one hour results show, how are we going
to fill it, kids?
Top answer on the board. show me FILLER!
<<ding>> Number one answer!
So we get to be treated to a song by Billy Klippert,
last year's third place finisher. I will control my
enthusiasm at this point. Actually it's not half bad,
but between you and me his discs haven't been exactly
flying off the Wal-Mart shelves.
And of course we get a Jon Dore bit. He's a psychotic.
no, wait, a psychic this week. The best part was the
comment about Jake Gold. (supposedly inside his head)
"I'm Mr. Jake Gold. I forgot to set the VCR for Gee-opardy.
I mean Jeopardy! I could be that guy on that winning
streak. I'll take Jake Gold is brilliant for $1000,
Alex".
All of the final six finalists are then forced to take
part in Benchat before there is a nice retrospective of
what Debra Byrd, the vocal coach. It turns out she's
been part of 5 Idol franchises. Nice!
This week's votes.
Kalan: SAFE
Jacob: Bottom 3
Teresa: SAFE
Elana: Bottom 3
Shane: Bottom 3
Jason: SAFE
And out of those three. we lose another female. Elana
bids her adieu.
NEXT TIME: Summertime hits. Can you tell we're
stretching? |
