August 11-12 - Round of 7: "Lionel Richie"

CI Round of 7

Tonight we're singing Lionel Ritchie!

(roll titles)

We start with a brief recap of the career of Mr. Ritchie. No shots of Nicole though. He'll be coaching each of our lucky seven.

First up is fan favourite Kalan Porter. Lionel can't believe that he's 18! Lionel feels that it's incredible that he can pull it off. Kalan in performance seems tailor-made for this song and really seems to be enjoying himself.

Jake: That was by far the best performance you've done on this show.
Farley: Four S's: Still, sex symbol, superstar, success.

Number two is Teresa Sokyrka who is absolutely smitten when meeting him. He feels that there's an old black lady in there somewhere! In Teresa that is. She's picked "Hello". And it's really really good. You could put it on Top 40 radio right now. She even be-bops out.

Sass: When you break into your scat thing, you got us!
Zack: I think that you're a bit weak on the performance. but it's impossible to criticize that in anyway shape or form.

Shane Wiebe is next and picked a newer tune called "Angel". Lionel says that he's not like everyone else on CI. Lionel is right when he says that it shows off his entire vocal range, but I think it needs a bit more oomph.

Jake: I told you to take those chances - and you did.
Sass: I was really impressed with that.

Kaleb Simmonds is described by Lionel as "Quiet Fire".  He's picked "Truly". It sounds very flat, bad, way out, whatever you want to call it - it's not good at all.

Farley: I really like how you represented the song.
Zack: To me, it (the performance) doesn't matter, I love you.

Number five is... Jon Dore? He's cooking up stuff on the BBQ. We get to see the cooking does at the Idol suppertime one night, including the presence of the unseen Idol chopper. Dropping mayonnaise, of all things. Mind you the best bits are the modeling of Jell-O, which are critiqued by Elana (as Sass), Jacob (as Zack) and Kaleb (as Farley). Great stuff.

Number five is actually Jacob Hoggard. Lionel says he's scary because you never know what he's going to do. He chose "Brick House" because it's very uptempo. We see last week's knockout Joshua holding a sign saying "Jacob's kinda sexy.". It's a decent performance but maybe a few too many theatrics.

Jake: For the first time, I felt that it was a bit too campy tonight.
Zack: It wasn't even that great for what it was.

Sixth position goes to Elana Juatco. She says meeting Lionel was amazing. Lionel can't understand where all the voice is coming from. She's chose "Fancy Dancer". She's really doing well with it, a nice performance.

Farley: That was really really really funky.
Sass: I thought that was really terrific!

Pulling the anchor tonight is Jason Greeley. He chose "Easy". Lionel feels that it's obvious that he's done this for a while. Jason states that he's been singing it for ten years. And his performance is dead on.

Jake: You won me over on one line!
Farley: A little underwhelming for me.

This was MUCH BETTER than last week. Restores my confidence.

RESULTS

We start off with the medley: unsurprisingly, it's Lionel's music. "Running with the Night", "Dancing on the Ceiling", and then Lionel himself joins in for "All Night Long". He then sings "Just For You" and he has to talk to Benbot. Hmm.

We go right into the standings:

Teresa: SAFE
Jason: SAFE
Kalan: SAFE
Kaleb: Bottom 3
Shane: Bottom 3
Elana: Bottom 3
Jacob: SAFE

And in his first time in the bottom 3, Kaleb Simmonds is gone.

NEXT TIME: Gordon Lightfoot.
