Episode 3.10 - The Journalist & the Basketballer
November 14

Last time, Gene Simmons finished the quiz... but didn't go for the million, donating $500,000 to the Elisabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

Celebrity action continues with a substitute 5th Grader... Please welcome Kassidy to the stage, filling in for Olivia.

And now, we need a player. We have an Emmy-award-winning journalist from Brookwood Elementary in Dalton, GA... DEBORAH NORVILLE! Let's see if she has the "inside edition" on how to win this game.

Here's her board.

And not only is Deborah playing for charity, she's playing for the audience. Should she reach the $25,000 level, everyone in the audience will get a copy of the "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" home game for Wii and DS.

But let's start at the start with Jenna and this question.

1st Grade English $1,000 PEEK COPY SAVE
What is the 24th letter of the English alphabet?

X marks the spot as Deborah goes with "X"... Good for $1000.

TRUE or FALSE?
Someone who is a nephew is male.

Deborah goes with TRUE... and everyone agrees. She's right.

Next up comes Bryce.

2nd Grade Spelling $5,000 PEEK COPY SAVE
What letter appears most often in the following word?

"Shampoo." Deborah goes with "O". Two O's. That's good for $5000.

2nd Grade Measurements $10,000 PEEK COPY SAVE
IF Mr. Foxworthy has a class of 5 students and the next day his class doubles in size, how many students would he then have?

Deborah locks in 10... and she gets to see the milestone!

But who'll help her with it? Francesca.

As a reminder, if she gets this next question right, THQ is giving away 500 video games.

3rd Grade Grammar $25,000 PEEK COPY SAVE
"Wept" is the past tense form of what verb?

Deborah goes with "weep". She locks it in.

.... and it's good! Deborah's got $25,000. The audience gets video games. And we move on to... a message from Laura & Lou Ann, two former classmates.

Now to the question.

4th Grade Earth Science $50,000 PEEK COPY SAVE
TRUE OR FALSE?
A stalagmite is a mineral deposit formed on the floor of a cave

Deborah goes with TRUE after a lengthy explanation as to how she would remember it. Works for her. She's got $50,000.

What is the approximate distance from Los Angeles, CA to Washington, DC?
a) 800 miles
b) 1200 miles
c) 2300 miles

She could've peeked and be saved. Jonathan said... C. So the save is out.

But she didn't need it. She's right!

5th Grade US History $175,000 PEEK COPY SAVE
What Puritan was elected Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony 12 times between 1630 and 1649?

Does Deborah remember this? Nope. She decides... to drop out with her cheats on the table.

Correct answer: John Winthrop. She would've gone with John Smith.
