The Ultimate Form of
Reality TV? Or Was It? - November 28
I have borrowed Gordon's Pepper's State of Play soapbox
long enough. So, the people are at GSNN have allowed me
a voice...
And welcome to "The Block Party".
This week's party guest is one Rupert Murdoch who
supposedly got the message this week and pulled the OJ
Simpson "tell-all" book "If I Did It" and it's
accompanying special which was supposed to air on Fox at
the end of Sweeps period.
But what gets my goat is that they lumped this special
with the genre of TV known as "Reality TV".
Reality TV for the most part isn't real. It's what I
like to call "Faux Real". It's about conquering your
fears, living on an island and falling in
love...supposedly. But all these shows are semi-scripted
and are semi-salacious.
I mean, there have been some seedy shows that have made
air. "The Littlest Groom", "Who's Your Daddy", "Married
by America"... the list can go on and probably will.
But this was not Reality TV. This was TV with blood all
over it. Fox was going to air this and basically allow a
confession on the air.
The media "watchdogs" tried to lump this with the bad
aspects of reality TV. I am going to defend it
here...with shows like "American Idol", "The Biggest
Loser", "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition", "Reality TV"
can be positive as well.
So to all the TV Critics--this wasn't reality TV. Call
it what it truly was.
A nasty piece of crap.
