LEADERBOARD AFTER ONE
Yellow Scorpions: 1280
Red Vipers: 1120
Green Jaguars: 0
White Falcons: 0
Blue Sharks: 0
Silver Dragons: 0

Somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean lies a Napoleonic fort built 200 years ago. Over time, it's been the site of many games of skill and strength. Tonight, the challenge finally comes to America... Kinda sorta. It's a UK/USA joint production.

We begin with six teams of brave soldiers... At the end of the series, we'll have but one. But today... it's all about these two teams.

Yellow Scorpions
CAPTAIN: Louis (NJ, US)
Shona (London, UK)
Jake (Atlanta, US)
Nathan (London, UK)
Red Vipers
CAPTAIN: Ashley (York, UK)
Tashi (London, UK)
Jimmy (NY, US)
William (NY, US)

Each show has five challenges. The aim is to win keys by winning said challenges. It takes three keys to get the maximum time in the Treasure Chamber. There, they will have to collect as many coins as possible to get through to the tournament final.

GAME 1: CATERPILLAR. Two players are suspended along two guide ropes 50 feet above the fortress floor. They have to get a cylinder in the center of the fort, go back to the start, and unlock a code that will lead them to their first key. Louis is playing for the Scorpions, while Ashley is taking on the challenge for the Vipers. WINNERS: ... SCORPIONS! (Scorpions lead, 1-0).

GAME 2: SLOT MACHINE. To get to the key, you need to move it along by putting tokens in the slots. To get tokens, you have to go through a gyrating tunnel. You'll have 90 seconds to get the key. Tashi gets the key JUST under the wire for the Vipers (Tied at 1)

GAME 3: TERROR WALK. 50 feet above the sea, Nathan & Jimmy climb the fortress wall toward the code that they need to unlock their team's second key back inside the fort. WINNERS: ... SCORPIONS (Scorpions lead, 2-1).

GAME 4: DARK DESCENT. Climb a ladder, get to the top, crawl down a tube, and find a key attached to a ball in complete darkness. You may find a couple of nasty critters as well. Jake will take it on for the Scorpions. He has two minutes. It only takes him a minute and a half. (Scorpions lead, 3-1).

GAME 5: SURFACE TENSION. A glass in an aquarium. Each team has coins of varying weights. They'll have to drop those coins into the glasses and hope to stay afloat, because the team that sinks first will give their opponents the key. WINNERS: SCORPIONS (Scorpions lead, 3 with bonus to 1)

TREASURE CHAMBER: Three keys will give you maximum amount of time. For each key you are short, you will have a time penalty. Because the Vipers have one key, they'll have to wait 20 seconds to enter PLUS another 20 for one member. Because the Scorpions have four, they get the full three minutes PLUS 150 points added to their final total. Before they can do ANYTHING, though, they need to use their maps to drop their team crests on the grid below to retrieve a key. Only then can they open their chests and start collecting. Collect as many coins as you can, because not only will the team with the most win today, but the higher your point total, the higher your standing in the tournament.

Time to tally the take. Vipers have... 1120. Scorpions... 1280! Scorpions win our first game of Fort Boyard! But the competition is just beginning...

Joe came to play Friday. Today, he'll take his game to...

CHAMPION
Joe Koster

Pelham, NH
telephone technician
$25,201
Lanny Timan
Chicago
business manager
Jeff Dufour
Washington, DC
online editor

Joe starts with $200 "Carb"s. At the TV timeout, Lanny has the lead all by her lonesome with $2800 to Jeff's $1600. Joe is in the back by half of Lanny's stash.

Speaking of the leader, she finds the Daily Double under $600 the Land of the Bible. She leads by $2600, betting $1500 on this: people of Shinar built a structure called this "because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth." "What is the Tower of Babel?" Correct for $5500! She leads at the half with $6500. Jeff is on $4800, but close behind with $4499 is the champ, who starts Double Jeopardy!...

... with $400 Countries of Afric"a", where Lanny finds the first Daily Double under $800, leading by $500. She bets... $1500 again... on this: of countries that fit the category, it stretches the farthest east. "What is Somalia?" Correct for an even $10,000! She'll try for the trifecta in $800 College Knowledge. She bets... $1800 on this: in 1924 North Carolina's Trinity College was endowed by a tobacco magnate & changed its name to this. "What is .... UNC?"

... Now usually I don't do this... Allow me a moment, folks...

WHAT?!

The proper response... the University of New Jersey at Durham, better known as ... Duke. She drops to $9400, where she ends the round against Joe's $8000 and Jeff's $14,800.

Final Jeopardy! in "2011 Events": to mark an historic visit, on May 17 an Irish army band played this song followed by Ireland's anthem. Correct response: what is "God Save the Queen"?

Joe and Lanny are correct. Jeff... is NOT. Lanny wins $16,001! Joe leaves with $27,201.

Gabriella wins a $546 stemware. She can put it in a new dining room with chocolate in Flip Flop. The price is not $5829. She flops... $5892 is a winner!

Amy Wright's right on the money with a 1428 washer/dryer. Can she be right on with a grill, a PC, and a Jeep Compass Sport in Master Key? That would require winning keys... which she doesn't do.

One more chance for Cheryl to get on this with an exercise bike. The price: $2000. They're all way off, but it was Rodney Payton who's going for a hot tub in Bonkers. The wrong price: $8752. I personally got a little scared, but he goes low low low high to win. The price: $6313.

Edward spins out $1000 and the top winner nod. The first Showcase: mazes in Vermont, Hawaii, and anywhere else in a Mazda MX-5 Miata. Edward bids $36,000. Brianna gets two cars, one Nissan Versa with GPS & DVD player... and one Mazda 2 without. She bids $42,333. Actual price: $33,917. Actual price of Edward's Showcase... $38,625 to win $40,260!

All this week, each contestant will have a chance to win a new Maxima washer & dryer from Maytag; it'll be assigned to a Round 1 question at random, in addition to the money hidden behind that question. If a player gets that question right, the prize is theirs to keep no matter what happens.

Amy Foote (Gilbert, AZ)
She wants to win enough money for a new vacuum cleaner.
Prize: Q10

[Q1 - Foreign Films]
When "The Hangover 2" premiered in France, it was given what new title?
A: Wedding Jitters Part 2
B: Very Bad Trip 2
C: Dumb Guys 2
D: Where's My Friend 2

Amy hasn't seen the movie, so she isn't sure, but she thinks the audience will probably know this. 45% say B, while 23% say D, and the others are at 16% each. She's still unsure about it since both B and D made sense to her, so she uses her first Jump. The answer is B, and she won't get... $25,000.

Her second Jump is used on the 3rd question, which had $100. She then sees this with $5,000 in her bank...

[Q4 - Do You Copy?]
A civilian aircraft carrying the first family is referred to by the call sign "Executive One" what?
A: Foxtrot
B: Charlie
C: Tango
D: Delta

Amy decides to go for it, guessing B... but it's A! Still, I think she could get a good vacuum cleaner with $1,000.

Ted Villa (Fort Mill, SC)
He prepared for the show using two things: Wikipedia, and Millionaire on Wii.
Prize: Q6

He jumps the 2nd question, leaving behind $10,000. He also jumps the 5th, leaving behind $15,000. He does have $3,500 when he faces this...

[Q6 - Sports Showdowns] (MAYTAG)
With 48.5% of U.S. households watching, the showdown between which rivals was the most watched non-Super Bowl sporting event?
A: Ali and Frazier
B: Harding and Kerrigan
C: Magic and Bird
D: Agassi and Sampras

Ted polls the audience, and 51% say A. He trusts them... but it's B (24%)! Ouch. That makes him the 6th straight contestant (not counting any audience contestants) to leave with $1,000.

Joel Waage (Seattle, WA)
He lost his job as a teacher a few days before getting the call to be on the show.
Prize: Q1

He gets the washer & dryer along with $3,000 from that 1st question. He builds his bank up to $30,000, then jumps the 4th, which had $7,000. After that is this...

[Q5 - No-Nose]
Which of these beloved Sesame Street muppets doesn't have a nose?
A: Grover
B: Elmo
C: Ernie
D: Cookie Monster

Though he has a hunch, Joel asks the audience. 75% say D. He goes with that, and it is indeed D, adding... $15,000 to his bank for a total of $45,000!

He then gets $500 from the 6th question, making his total $45,500 to finish this episode. Joel returns tomorrow!

CLUB MILLIONAIRE ANSWER - C: Merv Griffin
