We're going to 23rd & Fifth first
with Laurie and Zeke. They sweep the $25 questions, but get
their first strike on this: pencil lead is not actually lead,
but is made from what form of charcoal (graphite)? Second
strike: how many goals must a hockey player put past a goalie
to score a hat trick (three)? Zeke needs a mobile shoutout
with his mom: "Who in 2005 bought Sears for $11 billion
zillion?" They get Kmart for $600. Last question... gotten for
$700, thanks to a street shoutout: Tchaikovsky was the
featured conductor at the 1891 opening of what classical music
venue? They go with Carnegie Hall... Winner! And they're
going for the Video Bonus! The question: NYC's St. Patrick's
Cathedral is one of America's largest churches. It is an
example of what architectural style popular in medieval
Europe. "Gothic style.".... CORRECT FOR $1400!
Next, 13th & Third with Susan.
First strike: in volleyball, an unreturned serve that lands
directly on the court is called a what? She though ace... and
should've gone with it. Second strike: with 34 letters, what
is the atrociously long song title from "Mary Poppins?" Say it
with me now, "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious." Strike out:
what 3-letter Spanish word meaning "I am" is also a
high-protein legume? It's "soy". As in "soy un perdidor,"
Susan.
Finally, we're going to
Whittington and Essex. Girl: "I love van camps." Ben: "Well
wait until you see this!" Light show ensues. The girl in this
case is Becky, and her companion is Tim. First strike:
American John Walker Lindh was captured in Afghanistan
fighting for what Islamic group (the Taliban)? Becky pulls out
the Cingular Razr on this: what explosive disaster took place
at New Jersey's Lakehurst NAS in 1937? No one knows. It was
"The Hindenburg". Last question... needs a shout out: one of
the four gospels of the New Testament. "John"... Right for
$575! Will they go for the Video? No, they're good...

Lowry (Amy,
Kayley, Jill, Natalie, Kathe) |
Iribe
(Jessica, Juan, Danny, Martin, Vanesa); $555 |
Today's game (and this
recap) is dedicated to the memory of Pat Nederhoff, the
program's wardrobe stylist. She died earlier in the
month. She also designed clothing for Madonna and Donna
Summer.
Round 1:
a place where you should never EVER use foul language (5).
Amy fires with church, worth a staggering 86! Work and
school also make the survey. The champs try to steal
with "parent's house". Got it for 94! Other answer: day
care.
Round 2: something that
gets buried (7). Juan gets the top of the board with
humans. Also on the list: bones, plants, treasure, pets,
time capsules, and... trash? The Lowry lovelies hope
so... No! The Iribes get 189! Other answer:
hatchet/conflict.
Double Round: a sexy car (5).
Jill gets a Corvette, #4. Natalie gets a Jag... #3.
Kathe gets a Ferrari... #5. Amy gets a Porsche... #1!
Jill gets a Lamborghini... Sweep! The Lowrys get 108.
Triple Round (with nifty
new OSG): something you hate to admit you did on a
Saturday night (4). Natalie gets home alone, #1. The
Lowrys also get drunk. But can the Iribes take the game
with "clean"? No! The Lowrys win, 327-189. Other answer:
had a fling, gambled/lost money.
Sisters Amy and Kayley
take the Fast Money Board for $550. |

Candy Murphy
(federal IT specialist from Brambleton, VA); $9601 |
William Love
(brick manufacturer from Los Angeles) |
Sarah Altier
(teacher from Deland, FL) |
Candy lucked out on
Friday, but today, it'll be all about her skill. She
starts with $200 Celebrity High School Yearbook. She
winds up scoring... that much at the TV time out.
William, though, is owning the game with $5200 to
Sarah's $2600.
Last category in play is
State Birds, as Candy gets the Daily Double under $800.
Candy, now with $1800, bets $1000 on this: one
naturalist reported this state bird of Arkansas imitated
the songs of 32 birds within 10 minutes. "What is the
mockingbird?" Right for $2800. She ends with that much
for second place as William still owns the lead with
$9600. Sarah takes $2400 into Double Jeopardy!, which
she'll start...
... with $400 Aussie
Capitals (she could've gone to G_S_N, but oh well).
Candy finds the first Daily Double under $800 Words
About Writing. She bets $2000 on this: in his 1954 Nobel
Prize acceptance speech, this American called "writing,
at its best... a lonely life." "Who is Ernest
Hemingway?" Right for $6800. Last-place Sarah finds the
second under $1600 Where the President Passed. She bets
$5000 for the lead. The clue: in the Speaker's room at
the House of Representatives. "Who is John Quincy
Adams?" Sarah just took the lead with $11,000! And...
there it goes. She's back at $11,000 at the end of the
round, but this time, Candy leads with $16,000, and
William has $14,800. Anyone's game now...
Final Jeopardy!
in "World Money 2005": this US sports figure
(born 1940) became the only living person ever on a
Scottish note besides the Queen & her mum. Correct
question: Who is Jack Nicklaus?
No one gets it again, and
Candy makes a big wager to fall to third-place, leaving
with $10,601. Meanwhile, William pulls a Candy and falls
into the championship, winning $7599. |

The
Price is Right by Chico Alexander, GSNN
Air time: 11a ET/10a CT on CBS
(markets may vary)
Host: Bob Barker |

We ended last week on a
low-note (and before we get any e-mail about it, we are
aware of the situation, but we're powerless to stop it).
Let's see what Shanen Fernandez, William Egan III, Lois
Davenport, and Kimberly Balmilero can do about it. They
start with a trip to the Grand Canyon, which goes to
Shanen, who turns 18 today! And her birthday present?
How's about a Chevy HHR? The game is Lucky Seven. First
number is 1. Second: 8, that's an exacta. Shanen tries 6
next... 1. That's $5 she'll never see again. Shanen goes
with 5... and there go the other two.
Round 2 gives a treadmill
to Evelyn Griffin, who didn't even spend one minute in
the Row before arriving to the stage. She gets a shot at
a drum set and a grandfather clock at Barker's Bargain
Bar. The drum set is at $1526. The clock is marked at
$940. She'll pick the clock as the bigger bargain. The
drums are $3026, a $1500 difference. The clock is $2940,
and $2000 difference is a win.
Who wants to win a
chandelier? It's William, who gets to play the
Punchboard for $10,000! After winning a breakfast maker,
humidifier, and a cookie press, he punches out three.
First hole... $500. Second hole... $100. Final hole...
$1000! Good trade! But it's the birthday girl who wins
the Showdown and gets to play at the end of the show.
We start the second half
with two binocameras. Lois wins those and a chance at a
sauna, which is either $6280 or $5245. Which of the
Double Prices is it? Lois goes with $5245... and
goes back to Rialto, CA with a new sauna!
Joann Herb wins a rug in
round 5. She can stow that baby in the bed of a Ford
F150 IF she can win the Card Game. Her margin of error:
$2000. She draws up to $18,200. The actual... retail...
price.... of... that... truck... is... $19,805! She's a
winner!
Last chance for Kimberly
to do some damage... Golf equipment is the prize... the
winner... Andrea Cruz, who contrary to Bob's statings,
has NOT been in Contestant's Row for the entire show.
But can Andrea win a bedroom with mattress? The game is
Now (today) or Then (September 1996). The products:
Cascade detergent, Hot Pockets, Carnation Malted Milk,
Ritz crackers, Johnson's baby shampoo, and St. Joseph's
aspirin. The Cascade at $3.09... is then. Right! Andrea
goes with the aspirin... 99c is then? Nope. It's now.
Hot Pockets at $2.29 is next. She goes now... Right! The
malted milk at $4.39 is now? YES! But it's new truck
owner Joann who wins the second spot in the Showcase.
First up, Brazilian
coffee, a new dining room with dinnerware, and a trip to
Rio de Janeiro. Top winner Joann passes to Shanen, who
bids $14,500. Joann gets a Showcase filled with glory:
Old Glory (a large American flag), the DVD of "Glory"
(on a new DVD player with a home theatre system and
HDTV), and the glory of victory with a Chevrolet Malibu.
Joann bids... eventually... $22,000. She changed it from
$32,000... Keep that in mind.
Actual price of Shanen's
Showcase: $17,205, a difference of $2705. Joann's
Showcase is... $23,963! She just saved herself at the
last second with $45,067!
Now THAT'S how you start
a week!
Stats: 5-1, $72,638 |

Who
Wants to Be a Millionaire by Don Harpwood, GSNN

Host: Meredith Vieira |

There are plenty of ways
that a week of Millionaire can begin. Let's see which
way this one starts...
First up is Henry Granison (Ithaca, NY). Apparently, he
was once paid to sleep. Sounds like the best job ever,
eh? Actually, it was part of a project of some sort,
where he had some electrodes on while sleeping. But
he'll have to stay awake here if he wants to make about
a million. Henry starts by knowing that in mountainous
regions, scientists define the "timberline" as the
elevation above which there are no trees. He sweeps the
lower tier, then eventually reaches this...
[$8,000]
In the movie "On the Waterfront," Marlon Brando laments
that he "coulda been a contender... instead of a" what?
A: Nobody
B: Bum
C: Washout
D: Has-been
Henry has an idea, but he decides to ask the audience.
45% of the studio audience says B, while 40% says A and
14% says D. But in the AIM poll, 33% says D, 30% says A,
and 16% says B. Mixed results, there, so Henry then uses
the 50:50, leaving A and B. His initial thought is still
there, but he's still not sure enough, so he calls his
neighbor Michael. Michael says A, but when asked how
sure he is, he says "no," then "50/50." Henry goes ahead
and says A... but it's B! The studio audience was right!
Oh well, at least he has $1,000.
In the hot seat now is Connie Billerman (Morrisville,
NC). She faces her worst fear every day: the dentist.
Why? Because she works for one; specifically, an
endodontist (one that specializes in root canals). Oh
my... Anyway, Connie starts by knowing that Miracle-Gro
products are designed to help with gardening (reaching
puberty just happens). She easily makes $1,000, before
seeing this...
[$2,000]
After the 2004 Iowa caucus, what candidate gave an
over-the-top speech now known as the "I Have A Scream"
speech?
A: John Edwards
B: Wesley Clark
C: John Kerry
D: Howard Dean
Connie asks the audience. 88% of the studio audience and
52% of the AIM users say D. Connie trusts them... and
they're right! After a few more questions, she then gets
to this...
[$25,000]
The game show "Family Feud" was inspired by a segment
featured in what other popular game show?
A: Concentration
B: Match Game
C: Password
D: To Tell the Truth
The 50:50 leaves B and D. Connie thought it was B, but
she decides to call her sister Kim anyway. Kim isn't
100% sure, but she says B. After that, I'd like to say
that Connie would go ahead and go with B... but she
doesn't. She walks. Bad move, Connie; it was indeed B.
The lesson here: as Match Game host Gene Rayburn said,
"Go with your gut." But Connie didn't, so she has
$16,000 to take home; at least 9 grand less than she
could have won.
[I've been told that upon seeing how that question went,
Gordon was in pain, clutching his stomach and moaning at
his TV set. Frankly, I can't blame him.]
That's all for today. I really hope things turn out
better tomorrow. |
