Going to 17th and Fifth with Sarah
and Thor, celebrating their one-year ann'y. Happy happy, Sarah
& Thor! They pass the first tier. They have trouble with the
Haitian leader forced to flee his country in 2004
(Jean-Bertrand Aristide), but they get $350 going into the Red
Light Challenge: name the six pieces on a chess board. Pawn,
rook, bishop, knight, king, queen! Dude! Chess geek has $600!
Sarah needs a mobile shout here: what wind speed does a
tropical storm become a hurricane, within 10 mph? They go with
120... Way off. It was 74. Both need a street shout on this:
famous for his study of bacteria, what French chemist invented
a vaccine for rabies? They guess Pasteur... Right for $900.
They arrive with $1000 to win! But will they do the video
bonus? They're walking!
Ben next shuttles Raena to 62nd & Mad. She first misses the
country where Gerhard Schroeder replaced Helmut Kohl
(Germany), and needs a mobile shout on a fabulist who wrote
"The Bow Who Cried Wolf" and "The Tortoise and the Hare"
(Aesop). She's right for $75. Last question... wrong. Doesn't
matter, as she wins $125. But will she take the video? "Why
not?" The question: Every year the largest event in Canada is
a nine-day rodeo called the Stampede. In what capital of
Alberta is the Stampede held? "Ottawa." And right now, Ryan
and Don are going "You idiot!" She loses it all on Calgary.
Finally, Debbie, Tama, and Kim,
all from Arkansas, head to Magnolia Bakery. First strike:
former governor of Texas who lent his name to the state's
biggest city (Houston). Second strike: ionic, doric, and
corinthian are all staples of what part of Greek and Roman
architecture? (columns). They go with a street shoutout (if
they can ever grab someone off the street) to name the head,
like his father before him, of the International Brotherhood
of Teamsters. Fat good that does them, as they guess Jimmy
Hoffa... Right for $225! Time to phone up Nathan for this:
what French leader recently said that the only thing worse
than English food is Finnish food? They go with Chirac...
Right for $425! But will they go for the bonus? No, they walk.

Kevin Marshall
(student from Metairie, LA); $14,400 |
|
Mary Keefe
(waitress from Edina, MN) |
|
Bryan Adams
(accounts receivable manager from Novato, CA) |
Kevin came from -$200 to
the championship, knocking off someone we can now call a
ToC contender. He starts this one with $200 Truman
Capote, finding the early Daily Double under $800
"Bush"-isms. The only one in the blue state, Kevin bets
$1000 on this: in 2004, an anti-Dubya book by Jim
Hightower was titled "Let's Stop" this evasive behavior.
"What is 'Beating Around the Bush'?" Right for $1800!
Both challengers are out of the red with Mary at $1000
and Bryan at $1800, but Kevin's doing all the cutting
like a knife with $3800. Mary has first pickings in
Double Jeopardy!...
... with $400
American Lit, finding the first Daily Double under
$1600. After a scoring change benefiting Kevin, Mary
bets $3000. Caroline Meeber is the title character of
this 1900 novel. "What is 'Sister Carrie'?" THAT...
would've put her close to the lead. Instead, she goes to
$1200. $2000 in Classical Classics goes to Bryan, as he
bets the whole shoot'n'match on this: despite its name,
this "air" from Bach's Suite No. 3 was not inspired by
the sight of a stripper's laundry drying on the line.
"What is G String Air?" ... Count it! He takes the
lead at the end of the round with $13,200 to Kevin's
$13,000. Mary has $1600.
Final Jeopardy!
in "Newsmakers": in April 2005, during his
first 2 days on the job, he received more than 56,000
e-mails. Correct question: Who is Pope Benedict XVI?
Kevin's right to go to
only $13,201. But it's enough to win, as Bryan couldn't
come up with an answer. Kevin now has $27,601.

Janelle Jorge, Russell
Boatwright, Jean Fresher, and Natalie Quihuis are your
First Four on this Wednesday, all going after a 62"
HD-upgradeable DLP big screen TV. Jean walks with this
$3499 item to play with blocks. Her stash for 1-2-3; a
La-Z-Boy recliner, Dell XPS computer, and Frigidaire
range. Her first order was: Recliner, Computer, Range;
but after some audience coaxing, she switched to
Recliner, Range, Computer.
Recliner = $689
Range = $1300
Computer = $2030 and a WIN thanks to that "wonderful
change!"
Next, Russell will take his shot at the Giant Pegboard
after capturing a $775 set of Rosenthal stemware.
Russell manages to pick up three extra chips with an
espresso maker ($65), a CD rack ($30), and a novelty
mailbox ($24). With his chips, he never hit a zero.
Instead, he hit each 100; the right side 500; and dead
center for a total of $10,700.
To round out the first half, Janelle captured a Pulaski
Antiques Roadshow collection Bombay curio cabinet
($2205), and took to the Price Tag for a Pontiac Grand
Prix in Pocket ¢hange. Making three incorrect picks,
she takes the cost of the $23,781 car up to $1.00. With
the .25 she started with, she added .50 with her first
envelope! Then, a dime for .85...then, another DIME for
.95. So long as she doesn't hit a .00 she wins. Final
envelope = .05 and a PERFECT FIRST HALF!!
Our 1-2-3 champ, Jean, made it to the Showcases with a
one-spin 85¢.
Finally! A HOT STREAK! Let's keep it going with Edward
Sachetti winning a $1389 popcorn cart. (T-MAC NOTE: On
this popcorn cart, contestant Johanna Gimmeson bid, and
I'm not kidding, $9999 and filled her display. Bob
wanted to sell her a cart for only $9000.) Edward's
game: Double Prices for a Baby Grand Piano. $10,899 or
$9271? Edward went with "Ten Thousand," but doesn't go
home with the piano.
Alright, shake it off. Two more to go. Natalie, the
last of the First Four escapes the Row with a Cambridge
mahogany and brass telescope ($1650) to Pick A Pair of
products to win a $4691 Riverside "Palais Royale"
bedroom (with Tempur-Pedic mattress). Making it look
easier than Double Prices, she immediately picks the Jif
peanut butter and Clorox Clean-Up, matching $2.99 and
going nighty-night in her home.
Finally, contestant David Stack picks up his & her
Croton watches (each with 4 diamonds and 1 gram of gold,
no less) AND the $500 stash with a perfect $1200 bid.
His game: Money Game for a Pontiac Vibe. Making THIS
look easier than Pick-A-Pair, he goes for the 18 and the
59 to complete the price of the $18,959 car! 5/6.
Edward made it thru with a one-spin 95¢.
In the Showcases, Jean is our Top Winner and Edward is
our Runner-Up. The first Showcase is within the
Elevator. What's at the department store today? a
Horizon Fitness EX33 elliptical trainer, a Flexsteel
Kewanee maroon sofa, and a Jacuzzi J-355 spa. Jean
passed to Edward, who bid $11,500.
Second, Gwendolyn is the PIR postal inspector stopping
packages going thru. The prizes: a Goldenwest Billards
pool table, a 6-night trip to Hawaii (hotel = Waikiki
Park Hotel), and a West-Wight Potter 19' Sailboat.
Jean's bid on everything her husband wants: $22,000.
Edward's Showcase: $13,934 for a difference of $2434.
Pretty good.
Jean's Showcase: $23,816 for a difference of $1816 and
the WIN. Her total take on the day = $31,334.
STATS: 5/6; $97,300

Who
Wants to Be a Millionaire by Don Harpwood, GSNN

Host: Meredith Vieira |

Last time, Ellen Whittemore
(Mamaroneck, NY) made it to $2,000. How many of the 9
remaining questions on her road to the million will she
get through?
Ellen is a self-proclaimed pessimist, so she didn't
think she'd even get to $1,000. But her daughter is more
optimistic, and at one point, she told her mom that
she'll win the million. Ellen had better think positive
if she wants to win it. The game resumes, and she makes
it up to this...
[$25,000]
One of Jelly Belly's most popular jelly beans is
flavored with the "secret syrup" of what drink?
A: Dr Pepper
B: Yoo-hoo
C: Mountain Dew
D: Pepsi-Cola
Ellen asks the audience, and both audiences lean towards
A (60% studio; 56% AIM). Despite this, Ellen then uses
the 50:50, leaving A and C. With that, she now trusts
the audience and says A... and she has $25,000! Carrying
on...
[$50,000]
Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman
elected to Congress, was a U.S. representative from what
state?
A: Texas
B: Illinois
C: New Jersey
D: New York
Ellen decides to call her friend Eric, but he doesn't
give an answer in time. So, she switches it out (the
answer was D) for this...
[$50,000] (Q)
What Dow Jones Industrial Average company traditionally
issues its quarterly earning reports first?
A: Alcoa
B: AIG
C: General Electric
D: DuPont
Ellen takes a shot and guesses B... but it's A! Well, at
least it was a free guess, and she does have $25,000 to
take home!
Keith Wildman (Freehold, NJ), a 6th-grade teacher, is
next, and he's wearing a tie which happens to have
pictures of his kids on it. When the first was born, he
had one with just the one kid. When the second was born,
he got the current one. Now, there's a third on the way,
so he'll have a new tie soon after. Neat idea. Anyway,
Keith starts by knowing that the piece of information
most commonly stolen in an identity theft is the Social
Security number (because, well, cup size would be a bit
too personal). He soon secures $1,000, and soon faces
this...
[$8,000]
In May 2005, David McCullough released a nonfiction
bestseller recounting events occurring in what historic
year?
A: 1492
B: 1776
C: 1865
D: 1945
Keith decides to ask the audience. 49% of the studio
audience says B, and so does 38% of the AIM users. He
trusts them... and they're right! Moving on...
[$16,000]
Which of these activities is most likely to result in
income classified as a "capital gain"?
A: Selling a home
B: Working overtime
C: Collecting an inheritance
D: Winning the lottery
The 50:50 leaves A and D. Keith says A... and he's
right! On to the next question...
[$25,000]
According to his last wishes, the ashes of author Hunter
S. Thompson were disposed of in 2005 in what unusual
manner?
A: Poured into concrete
B: Mailed to the White House
C: Turned into a sculpture
D: Shot out of a cannon
Keith calls his brother David, who is positive that it's
D. So, Keith goes with that... and he has $25,000!
That's all for today. Keith will attempt to tackle the
upper tier tomorrow. |
