Quarterfinals: Velvet Rope Revolution vs. Lazer Wolves/3 the Hard Way vs. PDX503 - July 10

VH1 and Entertainment Weekly have searched the whole country to find the best teams of Pop Culture mavens and have come up with the 16 best teams to battle in "The World Series of Pop Culture" from the Ziegfeld Theater in NYC. Lisa Guerrero (former Monday Night Football sideline hottie) has the mic, and Pat Kiernan of Studio 7 is the man with the questions.

The 1st Round of 16 match pits the VELVET ROPE REVOLUTION (3 up & coming assistants from LA dressed in matching club clothes) and the LAZER WOLVES (not named after the character in Fiddler on the Roof, but from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure wearing matching rock t shirts) who live together in Cincinnati.

The Rules are this:

--Best of 5 rounds
--1 Player in Each Category (and the player cannot play in the game twice consecutively)
--6 questions in each rounds...and who ever answers more knocks the team member out. First team knocked out is eliminated.

Round 1: Movie Songs
VRR: Alex Carter
LW: Joe Rahim

Alex misses a question about which song Kermit was discovered singing in "The Muppet Movie" (Rainbow Connection) Joe steals it and Joe wins the round. LW are up 3-2.

Round 2: TV Kids

VRR: Nne
LW: Zack

Zack performs pitifully as he misses questions on who carried Kitty Carryall (Cindy Brady) and the character on "Sex and the City" who had a baby. He knew the actress but Nne knew the character and stole both answers. VRR eliminates Zack and we down to 2-2.

Round 3: Movie Taglines. Pat gives the year and the line...you get the film.
VRR: Dave Callahan
LW: Joe

This was a good round. Dave was perfect on Robocop, Wayne's World and Honeymoon in Vegas. Joe nailed Groundhog Day, Point Break, but misses this one: "Does for music what "The Sound of Music" does for hills.(1984). Dave steals--"This is Spinal Tap". And Joe is gone.

VRR 2- LW 1
Matt has to save his team from Elimination vs. Nne in Old School Rap.
Nne never heard rap in her house growing up. Matt's mom bought him "The Chronic" at 8. Matt gets questions on Adidas and the 2 Live Crew, Nne does get questions on Salt-N-Pepa and "Rappers Delight". They both miss questions on "Licensed to Ill" and what group sued De La Soul (The Turtles).

So we go to a tie break (recapper's note: This Tie Break round was the exact tie break round done in a 1990 game "Turn It Up" on MTV). "Since 1991--12 rappers won the Best Solo Rap Performance". The competitors have to go back and forth until one misses. Matt gets Dr. Dre and Nne misses the first guess. Matt wins.

VRR 1- LW 1
Final category: Comic Book Cinema.

VRR Dave vs.  LW Matt. Another good battle here. Dave gets V for Vendetta and Jor-El while Matt gets Michael Keaton/Batman, but misses a question about Nick Nolte's appearance on the Hulk. Dave seals the victory by getting the film about Harvey Pekar (American Splendor).

VELVET ROPE REVOLUTION ADVANCES. Lazer Wolves should have showered this morning.

ROUND OF 16 MATCH #2: THREE THE HARD WAY (Drew and Laurie--a couple with their friend Dave dressed in weird 70's clothes) vs. PDX503 (brothers Paul and Brian with best friend Wil) from Portland, Oregon dressed in matching Baseball Jerseys.

Round 1:Movie Sequels

Dave for TTHW vs. Wil for PDX503.

And Dave shows why he should have never been on the show. He misses questions on Home Alone 2, Austin Powers in Goldmember (Foxxy Cleopatra) and in the idiot answer of the night...says the island in Japan that Miyagi and Daniel-San visited was "Tokyo". Of course it was Okinawa.

Will advances.

TTHW 2- PDX 503 3

Round 2: On The Air.

Drew for TTHW and Paul for PDX503.

A great round here. Paul nails My Name Is Earl, Prison Break and the Dharma Initiative. Drew nails Doogie Howser, an AI question on Kevin Covais, but misses the word that the Colbert Report contributed to the lexicon and was named 2005 Word of the Year by a Linguistics Institute (Truthiness)

But it's down to Laurie for TTHW and the entire team of PDX503.

Round 3: TV Theme Songs--Given the Lyrics, give the show.

Brian was weak here, missing Three's Company and Full House. Laurie was perfect with Fresh Prince, Dukes of Hazzard and a steal.

Laurie is still around and Brian is out.

Round 4: Pop Across the Pond (British Pop)

Laurie vs. Paul.

Laurie gets questions on The Verve and The Chemical Brothers, while Paul gets Gorillaz and what Layla was about. They both miss a question on the 4 drinks mentioned in the song "Tubthumping" (whisky, lager, cider, vodka) but Laurie gets the final question on Bananarama.

Down to Laurie vs. Wil to advance

RECAPPER'S NOTE: VH1 BLEW THE ENDING OF THE GAME BEFORE IT WAS SHOWN. WHOEVER IS THE PERSON WHO CREATES THE PROMOS FOR THE SHOWS...THIS IS A BAD BAD TREND... YOU ARE A MORON. YOU ARE AN IDIOT. YOU HAVE NO BRAINS WHATSOEVER. YOU CAN AT LEAST SHOW THIS PROMO 10 MINUTES LATER--AFTER THE SHOW IS OVER!!!!!!!!

Final Round: Memorable Voices.

Laurie vs. Wil.

Laurie gets Chicken Run, Wil gets Casey Kasem (as the voice of Shaggy) Wil steals a Laurie miss about Woody Allen in Antz. Will gets Don Adams as Inspector Gadget...and Laurie misses who Tony Mantegna voices in the Simpsons (Fat Tony) and PDX503 wins and advances!!!

PDX 503 ADVANCES.

TTHW praises the other team and PDX503 praises Laurie for saving their team.

Who will be the next teams to advance towards the Alltel/EW/VH1 $250,000 prize?
