QUICKFIRE CHALLENGE: Gas Station Creation
First up, the chefs are paired... Susan &
Tony, Ana & Jerry, and Govind & Jimmy. The task... go to Chinatown and
pick up ingredients from, of all places... a gas station. From season 1,
you'll have to make a gourmet dish using anything you can find in a gas
station (Chef Lee Anne Wong won that one). You will serve to the
Bravery, a touring rock band ("Time Won't Let Me Go"). You'll have 45
minutes to cook and very limited use of the Masters pantry.
It should be noted that Govind was a
judge in season 3.
SUSAN & TONY: Maple Bread Pudding with
Caramelized Bananas. It's a little too sweet...
GOVIND & JIMMY: Fiery-Hot Cheetos
Macaroni with Grilled Slim Jims & Tomato Soup... The least favorite is
the sauce.
ANA & JERRY: Crispy Rice Cake with "Clamesco"
Sauce. It's very original... but it's a little bland.
Quickfire scores are...
Ana & Jerry: 3 stars
Govind & Jimmy: 3.5 stars
Tony & Susan: 4 stars
So Tony & Susan pick up $5000 each.
ELIMINATION CHALLENGE
Still in your teams, you will have to get
in touch with your inner Cupid. They'll have to cook a romantic meal for
30 couples on their first date. They have a budget of $350 and 45
minutes to shop at Whole Foods.
Once you're finished shopping, you have
two hours to prep and cook... Starting now. remember, you are creating a
duo dish. Govind & Jimmy are going to do a duo of lamb, a lamb carpaccio
and a chop. Susan & Tony are making a "love potion", something Susan
wooed her partner with. Jerry & Ana are making a duck leg with
vermicelli and orange blossom.
After two hours, we have these pretty
little numbers that go to James Oseland, Gael Greene, and Jay Rayner...
GOVIND & JIMMY: Seared Lamb Carpaccio
with Baby Arugula & Herb Salad and Roast Chop with Cauliflower Couscous
& Pomegranate Reduction. The dishes are well balanced, and the lamb chop
is a little more chewy. They played off of each other very well.
ANA & JERRY: Lavender Duck bBreast with
Red Cabbage, Pomegranate & Beef and Duck Leg in Vermicelli with Orange
Blossom Smoked Cinnamon Almonds. The dishes are very romantic, very
strong, and the sauces are very tart. The soup is impossible to look at
or eat. Together, the plates don't match.
SUSAN & TONY: "The Love Potion" - Black
Pepper Shrimp and Scallops, and Homemade Pasta with Cheese, Mushrooms &
Truffles. The pasta is not light, but it is savory. The shrimp's heat is
"kicking". As a duo, both intense experiences, something really good for
a date.
And a few of the diners made their match.
CRITICS TABLE
Govind & Jimmy think they have "opposites
attract" mentality. Susan & Tony liked to travel with their dishes. Ana
& Jerry played off of each other, but they didn't really think about how
they were going to eat it.
The final scores:
ANA & JERRY

Jay: 3.5
James: 3.5
