Episode 1
June 16
It's bigger... It's badder... It's...
buzzier... It's the Singing Bee. Playing the role of "Joey Fatone" is
Melissa Peterman, a frequent guest on "Pyramid" and "Hollywood Squares"
back in 2002. Now she's got her own show and her own band. And we have
six players who know about a "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (that's
Queen, folks) fighting it out for a shot at $10,000.
A few notes. Now that the show is on CMT,
the focus is heavily on country hits of today and yesterday. We were
told by the folks at the Gurin Company about a 60-40 focus, 60% country,
40%... anything else. But other than that, it's the same game it was
back when, and just like back when, it's not about singing it well...
it's just about singing it right. You don't have to know about mama...
or trains... or trucks... or prison... or getting drunk... But you gotta
know something.
We start with six and...
ROUND 1: Pick Four.
The band, now the Bee Hive Band, will
play the beginning of a well-known song. As soon as they stop, you
start. The first four to correctly sing their song move on.
- 1993, Garth Brooks, "Ain't Goin' Down
'til the Sun Comes Up".
BAND: Ain't goin' down 'til the sun comes up / ain't givin' in 'til they
get enough...
Ryan: "Goin' round the world in a pickup
truck..." RIGHT!
- 2003, Trace Adkins, "Hot Mama".
BAND: And you're one hot mama / You turn me on let's turn it up...
Matthew: "... turn this room into a
fire." WRONG.
Alicia: "... turn this place into a sauna."
NOPE.
Jeff: "... turn this room into a sauna." CORRECT!
- 1985, Alabama, "40-Hour Week".
BAND: Hello Detroit auto worker / Let me thank you for your time / You
work a forty hour week for a livin'...
Maggie: "... and
you never earn a dime." TOTALLY WRONG.
Erin: "...just to send it on down the line." No sending it on down here.
She's RIGHT!
One more...
- 1980, Eddie Rabbitt, "I Love a Rainy
Night".
BAND: Well I love a rainy night / I love a rainy night / I love to hear
the thunder / Watch the lightning...
Matthew: "When it lights up the sky."
That's four!
Next is a bit of a shakeup, as the next
few rounds will be scoring rounds to determine which players go on to
the Chorus Showdown. But first, let's get to know'em.

Ryan: 5
Jeff: 5
Erin: 0
Matthew: 0
ROUND 3: Singing with the Enemy.
The players will be divided into teams of
two. Every time the band stops, one of them must start singing. Every
correct line is worth another 5 points.
First is Ryan & Jeff.
- 1987, Randy Travis, "Forever and Ever,
Amen"
BAND: They say time can play tricks on a memory...
Ryan: "? ? ? wild and fan free." (CORRECT:
"make people forget things they knew")
BAND: Well it's easy to see it's happenin' to me...
Jeff: "I've already forgotten every woman but you." RIGHT!
BAND: Oh darlin' I'm gonna love you forever...
Ryan: "Forever and ever amen." Good, continue...
BAND: As long as old men...
Jeff: "... sit an' talk about the weather." Bingo!

Ryan: "... sit an' talk about old men." Right on!
BAND: If you wonder how long I'll be faithful / Just listen to how this
song ends / I'm gonna love you, forever and ever...
Jeff: "... forever and ever amen."
Ryan only missed once for 10, while Jeff
got all three of his lines for 15.
Next is Erin & Matthew...
- 1983, Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton,
"Islands in the Stream"
BAND: You do something to me / That I can't explain / Hold me closer...
Erin: "And I feel no pain." Right.
BAND: Every beat of my heart...

(CORRECT: "We got somethin' goig' on")

Matthew: "That is what we are" On the board!
BAND: No one in between / How can we be wrong / Sail away with me...
Erin: "To another world" Good!
BAND: And we rely on each other, ah-ah...
Matthew: "From one lover to another, ah-ah." Good.
Erin was perfect for 15, while Matthew is
lagging with 10.
After round 3:
Ryan: 15
Jeff: 20
Erin: 15
Matthew: 10
ROUND 4: Karaoke Challenge.
There are 15 missing words in each song.
You'll get 2 points for each word you correctly sing, and that's
important, because only the two players in the lead will move on to the
Chorus Showdown.
Matthew, you're behind, so you'll go
first.
- 2002, Keith Urban, "Who Wouldn't Wanna
Be Me".
Matthew sweeps the song for another 30
points, giving him a final total of 40. That's the mark to beat.
Next is Ryan with...
- 2004, Blake Shelton, "Some Beach".
Ryan misses one, but 28 is good enough to
put him at 43. Now THAT is the mark to beat.
Erin steps to the mic with...
- 1989, Clint Black, "A Better Man"
Erin needed to sweep to stand a chance at
the final round. She gets... 11. That gives her 22 this round, 37 total.
Not enough, I'm afraid.
Ryan has made it to the final round, but
will Matthew join him, or Jeff? The song to decide it...
- 2007, Montgomery Gentry, "Lucky Man"
Jeff... completely screws it. Three
words, six points, 26 total. And it's going to be Matthew and Ryan in...
ROUND 5: Chorus Showdown
Sing the entire hook... perfectly.
Because Ryan scored the most in the last round, he will choose whether
or not to play the first song or pass it to Matthew and wait for the
second song. The first song is a Carrie Underwood song from 2007. Ryan
elects to go second. So this song is all Matthew...
- 2007, Carrie Underwood, "All-American
Girl." Matthew misses. This is Ryan's break.
- 2006, Rodney Atkins, "Watching You".
Ryan... ALSO misses. Matthew gets another shot at it.
- 2002, Rascal Flatts, "Love You Out
Loud". Matthew... misses.
Not quite. All Ryan needs to do is nail
the chorus of...
- 2007, Gary Allan, "Watching Airplanes".
And... he doesn't.
Sorry. so we're going to a Sudden Death
tiebreaker! The song is from Alan Jackson from 1994. Ryan jumps in and
decides to play...
- 1994, Alan Jackson, "Summertime Blues"
BAND: Sometimes I wonder, what I'm-a gonna do...
Ryan: "'cause there ain't no cure for the
summertime blues." And Ryan's our first champion of the new series of
"The Singing Bee"!
But you know what they say 'round these
parts... Winning gives you thrills, but money pays the bills. It's time
once again for...
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!
