Welcome to the Jungle
June 22

A new season of the challenge begins with 28 competitors arriving in Costa Rica. They made enemies in the past and they'll team up to compete for over $300,000.

It began as a competition between the cast members of MTV's franchises, The Real World and Road Rules. But it would quickly become one of the fiercest competitions around. They would battle as teams and they would be tested as individuals. Over the years, angry outbursts led to legendary rivalries. Now those rivalries will be tested as enemies become teammates and compete for over $300,000. Welcome to The Challenge: Rivals.

A total of 28 competitors arrive in the Costa Rican jungle and are surprised to be greeted by host T.J. Lavin. Prior to the production of this season, T.J. had suffered an injury and was in an induced coma after a BMX riding accident.

And with that piece of information out of the way, here are the teams of rivals participating, starting with the males...

C.T. & Adam K. (Blue Team)
Johnny & Tyler (Black Team)
Evan & Nehemiah (Green Team)
Davis & Tyrie (Light Blue)
Leroy & Adam R. (Brown Team)
Ty & Brandon (Dark Brown Team)
Kenny & Wes (Yellow Team)

And here are the female teams...

Cara Maria & Laurel (Black Team)
Theresa & Camila (Green Team)
Paula & Ev(elyn) (Purple Team)
Jenn & Mandi (Yellow Team)
Sarah & Katelynn (Gray Team)
Jasmine & Jonna (Dark Blue Team)
Aneesa & Robin (Red Team)

On the horizon for the three male and three female teams who make it to the final challenge are big cash rewards. $100,000 will be awarded to the first-place teams of each gender, with 50 large for the teams who finish in second. However, the teams who finish in third will get nothing.

In the meantime, the teams will participate in numerous challenges which are followed by an elimination game in "The Jungle." Each challenge alternates as either a male or a female challenge day. The winning team of the gender that is not designated for the Jungle wins a prize. The team whose gender is designated for elimination wins immunity from the Jungle, while the team that finishes last will automatically be sent to the Jungle. A public vote will then be cast to decide which team of the same gender will face the last-place finisher in the Jungle.

Challenge #1: High Dive

Each team will hold hands and jump off from a platform 155 feet above the Nauyaca Waterfalls in an attempt to clear up to 15 hash marks. The male and female teams who make it the farthest (pass the most hash marks) win. Teams must jump before their feet cross the marked line, or else they'll be disqualified.

Jenn & Mandi - 12
Paula & Ev - DQ
Cara Maria & Laurel - DQ
Evan & Nehemiah - DQ
Kenny & Wes - DQ
Aneesa & Robin - 13 TIE
Johnny & Tyler - 14
Jasmine & Jonna - 13 TIE
Davis & Tyrie - 5
C.T. & Adam K. - 15 TIE
Brandon & Ty - 13
Sarah & Katelynn - 11
Theresa & Camilla - 10
Leroy & Adam R. - 15 TIE

On the guys' side, the tie was broken by who cleared the hash marks the fastest. Leroy and Adam get the tiebreak edge and they split $2,000. As for the girls, Jasmine and Jonna get the trebreak edge over Aneesa and Robin and they are safe from possible elimination. As for Paula and Ev, they were the only female team to get DQ'ed, and they're already in the Jungle.

The teams then go back to homebase where they have 20 minutes to deliberate on which of the other female teams will play against Ev and Paula in the jungle. Laurel tried to garner votes to throw Aneesa and Robin in against Evelyn & Paula, who Laurel considers a strong threat. Laurel gets called out by Aneesa, Robin, and Katelynn, but she gets her way and the teams voted Aneesa and Robin into the Jungle.

While everyone except C.T. parties and let the booze flow, a drunken Ty taunts Adam R., who procedes to punch Ty in the face, inadvertently tackling Mandi and causing her to hit her head on the floor and incur a temporary lost of sight. And as a result of Adam R.'s actions, he's forced to leave the game, leaving Leroy without a teammate.

Before the first elimination round takes place in the jungle, Leroy gets his new partner, Michael, for whom he's friends with.

Jungle Game: Hands On

Each player starts on a platform, leaning into their own partner. When T.J. pulls a lever, the platforms will slowly separate until it becomes hard enough to keep balance. The team that falls into the mud pit first loses.

Robin falls in, giving the win to Ev and Paula who keep their shot at the big money alive. Aneesa and Robin did a good job, but not good enough as they're sent back to the USA.
