Queen
Mary
May 6
After this series, you will
believe that man can fly... and jump.. and do almost other crazy stuff.
It's parkour, MTV style.
FIRST, a disclaimer... the
stunts you are about to read about were designed and performed by
professionals in the presence of professionals. They're extremely
dangerous and should not be imitated by anyone, anywhere, at any time.
What is parkour? Good
question. This is the official definition from American Parkour...
-
Parkour is the physical
discipline of training to overcome any obstacle within one's path by
adapting one's movements to the environment.
-
Parkour requires...
consistent, disciplined training with an emphasis on functional
strength, physical conditioning, balance, creativity, fluidity,
control, precision, spatial awareness, and looking beyond the
traditional use of objects.
-
Parkour movements
typically include... running, jumping, vaulting, climbing, balancing,
and quadrupedal movement. Movements from other physical disciplines
are often incorporated, but acrobatics or tricking alone do not
constitute parkour.
-
Parkour training focuses
on... safety, longevity, personal responsibility, and
self-improvement. It discourages reckless behavior, showing off, and
dangerous stunts.
-
Parkour practitioners
value... community, humility, positive collaboration, sharing of
knowledge, and the importance of play in human life, while
demonstrating respect for all people, places, and spaces.
Simply put... Here's the
start. Here's the finish.. Get there as quick as you can. TV shows like
"Wipeout" and "Ninja Warrior" build obstacles to overcome. In parkour,
the world IS your obstacle. Over the next 12 weeks, the best runners
from the world over will match wits with the best courses the world has
ever seen. And it will all happen LIVE.
This week, we're on the deck
of the Queen Mary. Running the course this week...
- Daniel Arroyo - Tampa
- Pip "Piptricks" Andersen - Taunton, UK
- King David - Los Angeles
- Ryan Doyle - Liverpool
- Ben "Jenx" Jenkin - Blackburn, UK
- Michael Turner - Santa Barbara, CA
- Daniel Ilabaca - Moreton, UK
- Oleg Vorslav - Daugayplis, Latvia
- Tim "Livewire" Shieff - Derby, UK
In round 1, each team of 4
will have to create their own viral video using the deck and anything
in, on, and around it as their playground. Judging will be based on
creativity, impression, and teamwork. The team whose video is judged as
best by the judges will earn a pass to the final speed round, where it's
man vs. clock.
TEAM 1: Daniel, Livewire,
Jenx, Piptricks
TEAM 2: Michael, Oleg, King David, Ryan
Team 1's video, "Titanic 2",
is themed after the Titanic, basically what's the quickest way to get
from where you are to a liferaft? To trick them up, there's a 15-foot
gap midships. Judges thought they had some difficult moves and great
teamwork... but their creativity was lacking.
Team 2's video, "Pirate
Booty" will use parkour as a means of fighting each other with a more
slapstick Jackie Chan feel. Can they come together over the course of
the competition and use teamwork to their advantage? The judges liked
the focused concept, but they needed to work together some more.
The judges were not
unanimous, but the winners... TEAM 1!
SPEED ROUND
Each of the four athletes
must execute two skills while running the ultimate obstacle course.
Fastest time wins.
On the Queen Mary course,
the athletes must climb or vault 18 feet off the bow and back onto it,
then go around the mast to a grid of 11-foot jumping bars and sprint to
the finish. All the while, you are required to perform two skills.
Daniel Ilabaca will demo the
course for the players. He sets a time of 29.41 seconds.
One important aspect of this
series is that it is live television, meaning day turns into night
before your eyes. And because we're on the ocean, moisture from the sea
will start to collect on the ship. Over the break, the players were
doing warmups, and Pip Andersen suffered an injury, so he is out of the
competition. Taking his place will be King David from Team 2.
First is Daniel Arroyo...
His philosophy: peace is everything. He is competing for his father, who
died of cancer recently. He needed to touch that obstacle at the
midships or else he was going to be penalized. TIME: 33.08.
Next is Tim "Livewire"
Shieff. He got his nickname as a breakdancer, but he found his voice
through parkour. He has adapted his dancing skills to his own style.
TIME: 29.16.
Up next is Ben "Jenx" Jenkin.
He is the youngest of the field, but he believes that he has what it
takes to compete on the world stage. TIME: ... 28.52! That's going to
put him into the lead.
Finally, we have the wild
card athlete, King David. Parkour has helped him stay sane as he lost
his job recently. Will he stay disciplined enough to beat the time of
29.16? King.... 29.24! That means that Ben "Jenx" Jenkin wins MTV's
Ultimate Parkour Challenge: Queen Mary!
Next time, sun, surf, and
lots of bikins as the competition goes to Venice Beach.
