Last time on MasterChef, 30 home cooks
assembled in the Kitchen of Dreams to fight their way to a coveted
MasterChef apron. For the 22 that did get one, the journey to $250,000,
the cookbook deal, and the title of MasterChef is just beginning.
Now we begin this first round, as we always
do, with...
ROUND 1 MYSTERY BOX
Each cook will have 90 minutes to prep, cook, and plate their dish using
only the ingredients in the Mystery Box. Tonight, we have chocolate,
bananas, assorted berries, ladyfingers, brandy, assorted extracts,
honey, and ground coffee.
But unlike most Mystery Boxes, at the end
of this one, at least one cook is going home.
Sixty minutes in, and we have our first
hit of drama: Elizabeth and Leslie. Leslie says he works. Elizabeth begs
to differ... okay, enough of that.
Cutter and Astrid are called up first.
Then comes Courtney and Big Willie. TWO of them are in contention for
the best. The others are in contention for the worst. The two worst
dishes belong to Cutter (Cappuccino pudding with biscotti) and Astrid
(Lemon Tart with lavender). The cook given one more chance... is Cutter.
Astrid, take your apron off and get gone.
As for the other two...
- Courtney Lapresi: Honey Cake with Mixed
Berry Coulis
- Willie Mike: Gingerbread Cake with Mascarpone & Berry Compote
On the back of that, someone's going to
get a huge advantage in the next Elimination Test... COURTNEY.
ROUND 1
ELIMINATION TEST: Ground Meat
Courtney will now get to choose the dish that her competitors must cook.
She will not choose the theme, which is... ground meat. She will choose
among... meatballs, meatloaf, and hamburgers.
First advantage: Courtney does not have
to cook. She is safe and through to the Team Challenge. Her second
advantage... she chooses for the other cooks...
Her THIRD advantage... she gets to choose
10 people to take with her to safety. She saves Leslie, Jaimee, Gordon,
Elise, Cutter, Francis, Kira, Ahran, Elizabeth, and Christian.
The other 10 are going to take on the
challenge of... MEATLOAF. You have 60 minutes to make a MasterChef-worthy
meatloaf.
- Francis B: Meatloaf with Burrata &
Romesco Sauce. Very bold move, Francis is playing to win here.
- Stephani: Lamb Meatloaf with Couscous & Blue Cheese Sauce - And Gordon
cannot even swallow it, it's so dry. "You don't serve cheese sauce with
a meatloaf, and you don't serve couscous with a meatloaf."
- Whitney: Caribbean Meatloaf with Lemongrass and Soy Sauce - No taste
to it.
- Christine: Veal & Pork Meatloaf with Fried Egg & Pesto
- Jordan: Meatloaf with Roasted Tomato Cream Sauce - Youth is not
served.
- Daniel: Meatloaf with Sweet Potato Mash - nailed it.
- Big Willie: Meatloaf with Masked Potatoes & Brussels Sprouts - great
effort
- Dan Wu: Meatloaf with Mushrooms & Kimchi - "That is absolutely...
disgusting." Bland, wet blend.
The winner of this Elimination Test...
FRANCIS! He will have a huge advantage in the next challenge. On the
flip side, the worst three... are... Stephani, Dan, and Whitney.
Dan... is safe. Leaving tonight on
MasterChef... is... WHITNEY.
As a reminder of what you're competing
against, Luca Manfe's cookbook, "My Italian Kitchen", is now available
at fox.com/masterchef or wherever books are sold.
Next time, our first Team Challenge,
where Francis will have an explosive advantage in a challenge dedicated
to American heroes.
