Semifinals: O'Shea/Hall/Collins
November 17
They were the smartest... fiercest... most competitive... most talked about class of Tournament of Champions in Jeopardy! history. Last week, they all played for a spot in this week's semifinal. This week, it's win-or-go-home as they all play for three spots in the two-day finale. At stake, $250,000, bragging rights, and the title of Jeopardy! super champion, a title that comes with it quiz immortality.

Second runner up gets $100,000. Third place gets $50,000. Semifinalists are guaranteed $10,000. As always, any money won depends on how high up the ladder a player goes.

Semifinal #1...

Terry O'Shea
Bridgewater, NJ
junior at Princeton
GAME 4 WINNER
Jared Hall
Washington, DC
consultant
GAME 5 WINNER
Julia Collins
Kenilworth, IL

Daily Double: $600 Bordering the Red Sea. Jared has $800 to Julia's $3000. He maxes out on this: this Red Sea port in Yemen gave its name to a candy made with milk chocolate & coffee. "What is Sana'a?" No, it's Mocha, leaving him with -$200.

At the end of Jeopardy!...

Daily Double #1: $1600 Great American Novels. Jared has $4200 to $6800 for Julia. Terry has $3000. He bets it all on this: "At Auschwitz, tell me, where was God?" is a query from this 1979 novel. "What is 'Night'?" No, it was "Sophie's Choice", dropping him to zero.

Daily Double #2: $1200 The 19th Century. Jared has $1200 to $5000 for Terry & $7200 for Julia. He maxes out again on this: his industrial oxidation process was perfected about 1856, allowing the mass production of steel. "Who is Bessemer?" CORRECT for $3200!

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

$8,200 $7,600 $12,000
Terry Jared Julia

Now what to do, courtesy our friends at J-Archive.com...

- Jared wins if: he bets nothing on a triple stumper.
- Terry wins if: she bets noting and Julia misses.
- Julia wins if: she bets $4400 and is correct.

Final Jeopardy! category: THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GLOBE

THIS CAPITAL CITY, WHICH AT 12,330 MILES IS FARTHEST FROM MADRID, IS NAMED FOR A SOLDIER WHO SPENT TIME IN MADRID

Correct response: what is Wellington, New Zealand?

Jared's response: what is? WRONG. Wager: $0. Total: $7600.
Terry's response: what is Santiago? WRONG. Wager: $0. Total: $8200.
Julia's response: what is Wellington? RIGHT. Wager doesn't matter.

FINALIST: Julia Collins

Jared and Terry were obviously counting on Julia to miss Final Jeopardy!. Julia had other plans in mind. Now she plays for a quarter-million at the end of the week.

Three more semifinalists next time.
