Semifinals: Wright/Rhee/Spak
November 10

Last week, the run for the globe began with 15 of the best players to ever grace the Jeopardy! stage. Among them, contestants who have won well over $1 million. Now only nine remain in a win-or-go-home semifinal that will see only three dreams of quarter-million dollar glory continue on. The other six will go up in smoke.

Second place will be awarded $100,000, while third gets $50,000. Semifinalists who make it to week 2 will receive at least $10,000. All money will be determined, as always, by how far the players go in the tournament.

Tom Nissley awaits the challenge of one of these three...

Buddy Wright
Ft. Worth, TX
operations engineer
GAME 4 WINNER: $17,201
Jay Rhee
Annapolis, MD
oncologist
WILD CARD: $16,401
Kara Spak
Chicago
newspaper reporter
WILD CARD: $2012

Buddy has the higher score and will choose from these six in the Jeopardy! round...

EUROPEAN

2011 EMMYS
MILITARY
WIVES
AUTOBIOGRAPHIES STORAGE JEOPORTMANTEAU

Daily Double: $800 European Geography. Jay finds it with $4800... and after he gets $1200 back from the judges for a line-ruling, he bets it and $800 besides on this: ports on this bay include Bilbao, Spain & Bayonne, France. "What is the Bay of Biscay?" Correct for $8000!

At the end of Jeopardy!...

$3,200 $8,000 -$1,000
Buddy Jay Kara

Double Jeopardy! round...

DANCE PARTY

Daily Double #1: $2000 Lads Named Vlad. All three players go fishing, but Jay catches it with $4800 on his nearest opponent, $12,800 to Buddy's $8000. Kara has $4400. He bets $4000 on this: in 1929, while working for RCA, this inventor & engineer demonstrated the first practical all-electronic TV. He blanks on Vladimir Zworykin, dropping to $8800, but...

Daily Double #2: $1200 Give the Order. ... he'll have a chance to recoup some of his loss, betting level on the grizzly bear & the gray wolf. "What is ursus?" No, carnivore, which drops him further to $7600.

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

$10,800 $6,400 $5,200
Buddy Jay Kara

Let's do the math, courtesy our friends at J-Archive.com. This is a crush for first place...

- Kara wins if: she's the only one to give a correct response. But she'll have to go for it.
- Jay wins if: he bets at least $4401 and is correct, while Buddy is wrong.
- Buddy wins if: he bets $2001 and is correct.

Final Jeopardy! category: HOLLYWOOD HISTORY

THEY WERE THE FIRST 2 SISTERS EVER NOMINATED FOR THE SAME ACTING OSCAR IN THE SAME YEAR

Correct response: who were Joan Fontaine & Olivia de Havilland?

Kara's response: who are Anna & Miriam Spak? WRONG, but cute. Wager: $5188. Total: $12.
Jay's response: who are Vanessa & Lynn Redgrave? WRONG. Wager: $6400. Total: $0.
Buddy's response: who are Eva & Zsa Zsa? WRONG. Wager: $2001. Total: $8799.

FINALIST: Buddy Wright

That is a look of pure emotion. This picture doesn't do it proper justice, but you can see that Buddy was relieved to make to the finals, especially given all he had to go through to get there. A Double Jeopardy! rally, plus two failed bets on Jay's end puts him in the power position, but now he has to defend it with his skill.

Tomorrow, what's sure to be a clash of the titans with Joon Pahk meeting Roger Craig meeting Mark Runsvold for the final seat in the grand final.
