Preliminaries: Christopher/Groh/Xie
July 22
Last April, 15 of America's best and brightest teenagers descended upon Sony Pictures Studios in LA. But they weren't there to see a concert featuring the newest summer jam... They were there to play Jeopardy! for big money and bigger bragging rights. At stake, $75,000 and the title of 2014 Jeopardy! Teen Champion.

Teenagers from across the country have tried out by the boatload by taking "The Test" online at Jeopardy.com. Now the best 15 of them have come together at the Sony stages in Los Angeles to compete for $75,000 and the right to be called this season's Teen Champion. Second place gets $25,000. Third gets $15,000. Semifinalists who make it to week 2 will receive $10,000. All of this week's players will receive $5000 and the all new edition of Classroom Jeopardy! for their schools. All money will be determined, as always, by how far the players go in the tournament.

This is a standard two-week affair, meaning that all 15 will play this week, with the five game winners joining the four highest-scoring non-winners in a win-or-go-home race to the two-day final.

Cooper Lair has taken the first spot in the semis. Who'll take spot 2?

Daily Double #1: $1600 Inventors & Inventions. Selena has just crept into second with $8600 to Jeff's $11,600. She bets $1000 on this: in 1895 he began sending & receiving wireless signals as far as 1.5 miles at his father's home near Bologna, Italy. "Who is Marconi?" That... would be right, but Selena blanks, leaving her with $7600.

Daily Double #2: $2000 6-Letter Words. Jeff leads with $16,000, and he bets $3000 of it on this: by definition, this verb form operates as a noun & ends in -ing. "What is a gerund?" RIGHT for $19,000!

At the end of Double Jeopardy!... and a change of score...

$9,400 $14,000 $19,000

Final Jeopardy! category: WORLD LANDMARKS

BUILT FOR A WORLD'S FAIR IN 1889, ITS VISITORS THAT YEAR INCLUDED THE PRINCE OF WALES & BUFFALO BILL; IT STILL GETS 7 MILLION A YEAR

Correct response: what is the Eiffel Tower?

Erin's response: what is the London Eye? WRONG. Wager: $400. Total: $9000.
Selena's response: what is the Eiffel Tower? RIGHT. Wager: $6000. Total: $20,000.
Jeff's response: what is the Eiffe Tower? WRONG. Wager: $0. Total: $19,000

SEMIFINALIST: Selena Groh

Give kudos to Jeff. He knew that the point of this week is to get to next week, and with a score like $19,000, he just might be in the catbird seat to do so. But Selena was a closer, and she is one to legitimately fear in the semis.

Three more teens tomorrow.
