Preliminaries: Bharathala/Briley/Mancuso
May 2

It's perhaps the hardest part-time job that any teenager could have... but at the same time, it's the most lucrative. Instead of enough for a used car and some gas to put in it, we're talking $75,000.

Teenagers from across the country have tried out by the boatload by taking "The Test" online at Jeopardy.com. Now the best 15 of them have come together at the Sony stages in Los Angeles to compete for $75,000 and the right to be called this season's Teen Champion. Second place gets $25,000. Third gets $15,000. Semifinalists who make it to week 2 will receive $10,000. All of this week's players will receive $5000 and the all new edition of Classroom Jeopardy! for their schools. All money will be determined, as always, by how far the players go in the tournament.

This is a standard two-week affair, meaning that all 15 will play this week, with the five game winners joining the four highest-scoring non-winners in a win-or-go-home race to the two-day final.

But this season's Teen Tournament comes with a twist. The quarterfinals will be held in home base in Culver City, while the semifinalists will not only win $10,000, but also a trip to compete across the country... in WASHINGTON, DC!

So far, Eliza Scruton and Ben Greenho has their tickets to Washington stamped. Who'll join them out of these three?

Daily Double: $1000 Back in the 20th Century. Catherine has the lead with $4000, double Elyse's score... which is double Krishna's score. She bets $1000 on this: on March 20, 1952 this country's Supreme Court declared voter segregation unconstitutional, but it continued. "What is Pakistan?" No, it was South Africa, dropping her to $3000.

Daily Double #1: $800 Visiting the Boston Area. This time, Catherine has exactly half of Elyse's total ($12,000). She bets $3000 on this: a circle of cobblestones in front of the Old State House commemorates his 1770 clash in which 5 were killed. "What is the Boston Massacre?" Correct for $9000!

Daily Double #2: $1200 US Government. Catherine now only trails Elyse by $3000 with $10,200. She fronts $2800 on this: the Constitution defines this crime as "levying war" against the United States or giving enemies "aid and comfort". "What is treason?" CORRECT for $13,000!

Final Jeopardy! category: CALENDARS

OF THE 12 BEASTS REPRESENTING YEARS IN THE CHINESE CALENDAR, THE ONE NOT BIOLOGICALLY RELATED TO ANY CREATURE ON EARTH

Correct response: what is the dragon?

Krishna's response: what is the dragon? CORRECT. Wager: $7201. Total: $15,001.
Catherine's response: what is dragon? CORRECT. Wager: $10,000. Total: $21,000.
Elyse's response: what is a dragon? CORRECT. Wager: $3000. Total: $22,600.

Semifinalist: Elyse Mancuso

Elyse had this game won when she decided to play in Double Jeopardy!. You could've also made a case for Catherine, who made several game moves on the back of the Daily Doubles, but Elyse had the broader range and the quicker recall. Right now, she's the one to watch. Her win knocks out Sam and Jeff from earlier this week.

Next time, we begin building your final nine.
