Hollywood Round: Part 1
February 8
Eight
cities... Hundreds of thousands of auditions... 310
survivors. Now it's time to step up or get sent home. It
promises to be the most intense Hollywood Round ever on
American Idol.
This... is Hell Week.
HOLLYWOOD... Sort of.
Pasadena Civic Auditorium
Day 1
Round 1 as always begins
with the Line Sing. One by one each person will sing a cappella for 90
seconds, and then the judges will cut from front and back with no
feedback. And half of them will go home today. For our purposes, singers
will be followed by their audition city.
First line features Johnny
Keyser (St. Louis) and Heejun Han (Pittsburgh). Johnny sings "Dreamin'"
by Amos Lee. Heejun sings "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" by
Michael Bolton. Both are in the front line... and...front line GETS
ANOTHER DAY IN HOLLYWOOD.
Elise Testone (Charleston)
sings "Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai, Baylie Brown (Galveston) sings
"If I'm Not in Love With You" by Faith Hill, and Hallie Day (Pittsburgh)
gives us Aretha's "(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman". All three
are through. Nice start...
Next in the line, Jen Hirsh
(Galveston) with "Up to the Mountain" by Patty Griffin and Lauren Gray
(St. Louis) with "One and Only" by Adele. Jen and Lauren ... are
THROUGH!
Heather Youmans, Sascha
Julian, and Candice Russell... are not as lucky.
Midday on Day 1... and
Steven needs to rally the troops.
After that, we get Phil
Phillips (Savannah), our Georgia pawn star with James Brown's "Papa's
Got a Brand New Bag" and Reed Grimm (Pittsburgh) with Jack Albertson &
Peter Ostrum's ode to being lucky... from "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate
Factory", "I've Got a Golden Ticket". Sidebar... he's a performer.
Travis Orlando (Pittsburgh) was sent home from Hollywood last year. Will
he redeem himself with "All I Do" by the Regulars Band. Surviving...
Phil and Reed. Travis.... it isn't your day. Again.
Also saying goodbye...
Ramiro Garcia (Galveston), Wolf Hamlin (San Diego), and Jenni Schick
(Aspen).
... and at the end of day 1,
we are 68 people short.
Day 2
The second half of hopefuls
are lined up and ready to fire.
Adam Brock (Pittsburgh) has
been told that there is a "large black woman trapped inside of (his)
body". Unfortunately there is not a small white girl beside him for the
first time in a while... his daughter. He sings "Walking in Memphis" by
Marc Cohn. Following him, Jane Carrey (San Diego) with "Lookin' Out My
Back Door" by CCR. Stepping forward... Jane. Front row.... it's the end
of the line. Adam's in. And who better to hear it than his little girl.
For a few auditioners, "yes"
means "yes", "no" means "yes", but "stop or we're calling the police"
means... just that.
David Leathers (Savannah)
hasn't stopped macking on the ladies. Joining him, Shannon Magrane
(Savannah). Shannon sings "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys. David sings "Because
You Loved Me" by Celine Dion. Both bring the house down. Joining both of
them, Jessica Phillips (Portland) with Whitney Houston's "All the Man
That I Need". Another one to bring the house down, but it's like Chris
Bosh to Lebron and D-Wade before her. All three stay back. And all three
are INVITED BACK. Joining them, Angie Zeiderman (Aspen) and Brittany
Kerr (Savannah).
Next line! Erika Van Pelt
(Pittsburgh) with "Glitter in the Air" by Pink, Creighton Fraker
(Pittsburgh) with Queen's "Somebody to Love", and Aaron Marcellus
(Pittsburgh)... which was part yelling. All three are through.
Next line! Lauren Mink
(Savannah) has "Alone" by Heart, Jeremy Rosado (Savannah) has
"Superstar" by Luther Vandross, and Symone Black (San Diego) has "Dock
of the Bay" by Otis Redding.
... and a NASTY FALL OFF OF
THE STAGE.
