The world's ultimate talent search comes to Canada, as the eyes of a nation are upon the best undiscovered singers in the country. And with a lucrative recording contract on the line for one lucky Canadian poised to become the next Idol, there is only one rule: If you can sing it, bring it.

Auditions: The West - May 31

Well well well! Welcome to season three of Canada’s only ongoing reality show, Canadian Idol! And this year, we’re getting even bigger – THIRTEEN CITIES! Yes folks, we’ll travel to *takes breath*

Vancouver, Whitehorse, Calgary, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Sudbury, London, Toronto, Montreal, Moncton, Sydney, Charlottetown and St. John’s

*takes another breath*

And we’ll start, as promised, in the west.

But first, a flashback. You’ll remember that last year, Kalan Porter won and has the best ever selling single by a Canadian solo artist.

And we’ve got our four judges back for the ride: Farley Flex, Jake Gold, Sass Jordan, and Zack Werner.

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Please note that if a hometown is not given, it means that the singer is from that city; if a province is not given, it means that they are from that province (which is usually the case anyway)

Our first singer is Becky Campbell of Delta who promptly forgets the lyrics of “Any Man of Mine”. Julia Lockley brings along a singing puppet to help her. Brayden LeClair of Victoria sings something of a swing song. He breaks it down, and breaks out with a golden ticket (after Zack asks if his screws are tightened).

Chelsea Johnson (originally of Sydney, NS) is back for more – for the THIRD TIME. In season one she auditioned singing “At Last”. In season two she sang “If I Ain’t Got You”. Will the third time be the charm? She belts out a passionate, but mellow song… and persistence pays off! Zack can’t understand why they passed her up the first two times! She gets her ticket and bawls.

Angela Heinze of Shuswap Lake just screws up halfway through. (ANONYMOUS LUCY) really gets into it, but for the wrong way. Jake thought she was hyperventilating. Robyn VanLuven of Langley sings high pitched, just like an angel… singing Star Trek! Brandi Slinn of Abbotsford isn’t so innocent when she sings a Britney Spears.

And then there’s a parade of rejects… and we find out this year there’s a confessional cam for rejects! Oh joy.

Suzi Rawn is from Kamloops and sings in a band called “King Size Suzy”. Her bandmates initially don’t support her, but they do turn around. And her singing is great too – singing “Let it Rain” – and the judges agree that they need a female rocker in the competition. I like her style, and so do the judges, she’s going to Toronto.

All told, 17 advance from Vancouver.

CALGARY, ALBERTA

It’s off to Cowtown.

Bree Carson sings a sweet country song. She admits she’s kooky. She belts out three different tunes, and there’s that persistence again, she’s got a ticket!

Lousia O’Keane is from Canmore and butchers a musical tune. Brandon Kowalczyk of Edmonton tries “Rocket Man” but burns out his fuse alone. Richard Morrison is a cowpoke, but he’s the last one. Nicole St. Amant goes for the “louder is better” theory, but it’s not. Jenn Beaupré of Drumheller sings “I Can See Clearly Now” and gets her ticket. Jake says she sings better than Alanis. Raven Spier has influences like Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin. She sings a personal favorite of mine, “The Mummer’s Dance” by Loreena McKennit (a Canadian folk singer). She wins over everyone except Zack, but three out of four is good enough!

Sean Child of Okotoks sings "Karma Chameleon" and is out of there. Mike Pathos is a rock journalist, but he sure isn’t a rock singer, butchering “Brian Wilson”. Amanda Marles drove seven hours from Swan Hills. She’s horribly nervous, her knees shake. But she cracks a joke and launches into “It’s my party”. But she doesn’t have to cry, she’s moving on… but she cries anyway for joy.

Calgary produced 24 gold tickets and a lot of happiness.

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN

Darren Kalaman of Regina starts off the prairie province with a big “Guten Tag”. He launches into “Doe Re Mi”. Anthony Yuzwa has no talent and no discernable lyrics. Amanda Penner of Hague apparently hits puberty during her song. Nicola Hutton of Edmonton, AB sings in fast forward. Meredith Shareski of Moose Jaw sings “Stormy Weather” and goes bonkers when she hears that she’s moving on.

We also see the that the Production Assistants are part of the “Magic City Chorus”… and Jon Dore joins into the fun. Disturbing, truly seeing him in a wig, lipstick and sequins. *shudders*

“I feel pretty” turns into a primping workshop. Rochelle Bondarenko pegs Zack as “egocentric” (when prompted by Farley) but then does a wonderful rendition of “I hope you dance”. 14 move on.

And… while Ben is tanning… Jon gets a call on a payphone and it told to go to

WHITEHORSE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES

Whitehorse – along with Charlottetown and Sydney – are “advance cities”. What this means is that singers go through round one (a single producer) and round two (an executive producer) and then will advance onto a round three audition (celebrity judges) in another city.

We start with Cort Carpenter and he’ll have to sing "Jessie’s Girl" somewhere else. Laurel Mercer isn’t good enough. Jessica Fullmer doesn’t even turn around! Florence Kushhiruk of Haines Junction gives up halfway through and finds the lights too hot! Jinny-Linn Butterworth looks at her lyrics and then doesn’t go that far.

All in all, three contestants are moving onto Winnipeg for the celebrity judging.

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA

We start with a collage of “Taking Care of Business” on the guitar and segue to Matt Cairns singing “I’ll be” with such vim and vigour that can’t be refused! He’s moving on, because of his personality. Scotty Morash sings Stevie Wonder but not that well. Raymond Smith may be the quietest person yet. Pascal Boivert has the same problem. But not when he sings “Billy Talent”.

Robert Perrier of Thunder Bay ON starts singing “You raise me up” and his grandma is waiting outside. Jon lets her listen to the feed from the audition but she doesn’t want to because she’s going to cry. And she does, because he makes it!

Opal Arndt tries an Evanescence song but doesn’t go ahead. Holly Ahnold tries to go “Downtown”. Spencer Hari of Thunder Bay goes on a date with “Deliliah” but his actions may be too much. Apparently not, because he’s going to Toronto. Paul Figsby sings “Maria” and goes through.

18 go through to Toronto… and that’s the west! Next up, the east…
