(C-Note: some of the acts that you are
about to read involve real danger in front of a live television audience. They were
designed, practiced, and supervised by professionals, taking the
contestants' safety into full account. They are extremely dangerous and
should NEVER be attempted anywhere, by anyone, at any time.)
Last time, we introduced
several good acts and one new twist, a Golden Buzzer. At
any point during the audition phase, a judge can hit the
Golden Buzzer and save one act, advancing them to Live
Shows. But they can only do this ONCE. Howard has
already used his to save karate crazies Dustin's Dojo.
Will someone hit it tonight? The journey begins again
in...
LOS ANGELES
Dolby Theatre
We begin with a 12-piece family band
called The Willis Clan (siblings). As the background music will attest,
they're reminiscent of the Partridge Family. The oldest is 21, the
youngest is 3. They sing "My Favorite Things"... and they're pretty much
far and away the von Trapps if they were in West Virginia somewhere.
Everyone's got a part and everyone plays it well. The judges loved the
blend, and they want to hear more of them. Four yeses.
David & Leeman (Los Angeles) are comic
magicians that say their dreams are bigger than their backyards. They
have day jobs, but they'd love to trade it in for $1 million and a
headline show in Las Vegas. Their act: touching Howie's head and
preventing him from doing things. The big one... his ability to read. He
can't pronounce "comedian", "germaphobe", and "Howie Mandel". Howard
likes the presentation and the youthful exuberance and just making Howie
look like a jackass. The ladies concur. The judges give them a pass.
Julia Goodwin (15, student) is going to
sing. Her father introduced her to music by way of her piano. This could
be her ticket out of the pizza places and into the next round. She
performs Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind", reminiscent of the jazz
greats, like Ella or Lady Day. Of course it's not up to that league YET,
but she's got a good voice to her. A standing O from the judges says it
all. She's through.
Next up Sean & Luke (dancers), "brothers
from another mother". They've been dancing for a long time and getting
grief for it. They want to get a little more than just grief. They want
to get paid tapdancing. I would've buzzed them for taking too long to
get to the point. But they have impressive skills, incorporating some
b-boy moves into their tap routine. Howard was the only one to dissent,
saying it felt "ordinary". The ladies say yes. Howard says no. Howie
says YES. That's three. That's enough.
A martial arts montage means only one
thing... the return of Dustin's Dojo. No, it's Master Qi Feilong (kung
fu master & energy healer). His parents sent him to a Shaolin temple. So
I'm guessing this will involve kung fu somehow. He will chop chopsticks
with a $10 bill and then stop the second-hand of a clock. Nick wanted it
stopped on a 6... He got it to stop on the 7. Howard.. .not impressed.
First buzz of the night. He ends up chopping the sticks, but it was a
$20. Then he gets Rochambeau'ed. The panel is deadlocked, and that means
that Master Qi is out of energy.
Real Encounter (Springfield, MO) are
action sports athletes with bike stunts... and a calling. They're
actually also a ministry. They incorporate BMX and motocross into their
messages. Obviously they have to take this act outside to Universal
Studios. Most of the act is jumping over ramps while the bikes go into
streetstyle. It's very ... thrilling. Very high energy, and the judges
are beating their hearts like crazy. Mel B goes so far as to say that
this takes danger to a whole new level. They sweep the panel... and
they're not the only ones, with SLAM, Flight Crew Jump Rope, and XPogo
all advance.
Lyric, Dominic & Phoenix are triplets.
Together, they are Dom the Bom's Triple Threat, pint sized card
throwers. They got into throwing two years ago by seeing someone on this
show do the same thing. His act has three acts...
1) Set up deck of cards.
2) Set up stalks of celery.
3) (^_^) celery.
Then he goes into throwing cards into the
balcony... and then at Nick. The judges are impressed. The judges are
going to give this one a pass.
Magicians have a hard time at it on AGT.
This is a fact. And yet, no one buzzes the obviously bad ones. Spoke too
soon. Next up, Mad Jack (magician) says that he likes to give his
audience a visual experience that no one has ever seen before. We've
seen a deck of cards before. Howard picks a card. It's put back in the
deck. The deck is put in the box. The box is put in a rubber band. Then
down his pants. I wish I had my X. Howard finds his card... in his butt
cheek. Naturally Howard wants Howie to touch it. Mel B wants none of it.
The Fifth Judge wants none of this. Heidi would've said yes...and she
would've been the only one.
Miguel Dakota (21, Monument, CO) is a
construction worker, but what he really wants to do is sing. He dropped
out of college to take care of his family, including his single mom and
siblings. He says that he loves his mom, he can cook, and he doesn't
have a girlfriend. Well, Heidi's sold. Let's see what he can do with
"Too Close" by Eric Prydz. And before he sings one note, the audience
comes down with HGWG, meaning of course, that he and Jaycob are going to
fight for the right to lose to the other one. But that's down the line.
Right now, what say the judges? The ladies love the voice and the look.
Howie says that he's got the total package. And now he has four yeses.
Abigail Baird (33, aerialist) teaches by
day, and in her spare time hangs on cloth. She wants to have all the
stories in her head come to life. Let's see what story she has to tell.
Her act is literally... Aerial Animation. Aside from hanging on a rope
while video is playing in the background, it's nothing we haven't seen
before. But the judges are loving this. Howie thinks that it was
innovative and imaginative. The judges sweep, but I think she does not
get past the first round.
We're wrapping up our auditions tonight
with John & Andrew (salsa dancers). The one question they always get...
are you a couple? John is "very straight". Andrew is "very gay". So
yeah, they're not a couple. They're just dancers. And pretty darn good
ones. After an impromptu dance lesson for Howie and Howard... it's a
yes.
And it's a good night from us. Next
time... more stuff.
