(C-Note: some of the acts that you are
about to read involve real danger in front of a live television audience. They were
designed, practiced, and supervised by professionals, taking the
contestants' safety into full account. They are extremely dangerous and
should NEVER be attempted anywhere, by anyone, at any time.)
Nick's got the party
wagon rolling. Howie, Howard, Mel B, and Heidi are
locked and loaded. We've got the buzzers. We've got the
Xs. America... DO YOU HAVE THE TALENT? LET'S DO THIS!
NEW YORK CITY
Madison Square Garden
We start our search in the World's Most
Famous Arena... with a twist. The Golden Buzzer. Each judge gets one
opportunity and one opportunity ONLY to save an act using the Golden
Buzzer. If someone hits it, that act is saved no matter what.
First is Adrian Romoff (9, Atlanta) and
his piano. Aside from that, he's also a science fan. He hopes he has the
correct formula for a winning performance. He's already a winner in
life; he skipped FIVE grades. He's 9 years old... and he's in 8th grade.
And he's skipping ANOTHER grade next year. He performs a rock'n'roll
version of "Flight of the Bumblebee".... like a virtuoso. Howard wasn't
sure how much was him and how much was track. Adrian plays another
number, and it's all him. Mel says he's not just about the piano, he's
also about his personality. And he gets the season's first sweep.
Joining him in Vegas are unnamed clogging
siblings, unnamed circus artists, and an unnamed acrobatic break-dancing
comedy show.
Dan Naturman (44; NYC; from season 2 of
Last Comic Standing) ... made the first suck reel of the season. The
good news: it's the tail end of it, so he could be in with a chance. He
fears a mental seize-up and, of course, the buzzer. He goes for
the old-standby: marriage compared to your car. It's actually a vast
improvement from his performance from so many years ago. Howie thought
he looked like Jerry Seinfeld & Jon Lovitz had a child... a child with a
sweep.
Rokardy (49; originally from Cuba) is a
hand-balancer. He hopes to have a hand for this competition. He starts
out with a few balance poles... followed by a few more tossed by his
assistant. Followed by.. a few MORE! He's right behind the Xs when all
is said and done. Howie says that the height and stamina and strength
are unparalleled on this show. Mel thought it was dangerous and
seamless. So how did Rokardy meet Carlos? 19 years ago, his mother
birthed him. Yep, it's his son. Anyway, he also gets in.
Donnie Valentine (50; Champaign, IL) is
next. He's a singer who boasts incredible range that brings himself to
tears. He calls this a dream. Will we call it a nightmare? He sings "You
Make Me Feel Brand New".. and the fifth judge is NOT having it. Neither
are the other four. We have our first X-out. And Nick insists that
Donnie continue, though. And he does? For the love of...
And it just gets weirder, with squats,
bald drums (with Howie on an assist... who was wincing at someone
touching his head. Remember, Howie's a germophobe with OCD), and a hula
hooper.
A lot more talent coming out of the
break... most of it putting Heidi to sleep. And she's not the only one,
as we have to wake up Mike Greenstein (93 - God bless him - Queens, NY)
for his act. He's confident. If he fails, it'll be the first time. His
talent... pulling vehicles with his teeth. He's a strong man, Mighty
Atom Jr. For this act, we're going outside to watch him pull a car with
his teeth across a finish line. Something he does... effortlessly.
Stations, we owe you an ID. We'll get to that right after the judging.
Howard says that the Mighty Atom needs a little more showmanship. He
says no. The fifth judge begs to differ... as do Howie, Mel, and Heidi.
We're moving to the West Coast in a
moment, but right now, let's pause 10 seconds for station
identification. This is America's Got Talent on NBC...
LOS ANGELES
Kodak Theatre
We start with a pair of singers, Acte II
(New Orleans), who went to college together. They see each other as the
next Beyonce, the next Christina... the next Destiny's Child? Sure, why
not, with all the frenemy action going on. They perform "The Flower
Duet" from "Lakme". It is a little tinny in tone, but the melody works.
The fifth judge loves it. What do the others say. Mel B says that was
their moment. Howie did not expect opera. Heidi thought it was "wunderbar",
while Howard says that the place was transformed into an opera house.
Sweep!
Next, acts that split the panel. Will the
same schism befall Dustin's Dojo (Pensacola, FL), from Roger Baker's Tae
Kwon Do and Pizza? He teaches karate on YouTube, despite not having a
graduated belt. His friend: Terry. He doesn't say much. Together,
they're shooting for karate movie fame. First, they ... give a lesson?
Looks like more of a comedy act than a danger act. His demonstration
includes breaking boards, breaking the full-extension punch record, and
a karate combo while having salt thrown into your eyes. .... Yeah, none
of that happens before Heidi and Mel razz him. Not only are the panel
split, so are the audience. The guys liked it. The ladies... not so
much. "They're in the tradition of the Three Stooges." Oh. That explains
it. Heidi says it was annoying, while Howard says it was funny. It's all
up to Mel... and she says no. Howard... is GOING FOR THE GOLDEN BUZZER!
WE HAVE A SAVE! Howard has used his one and only Save for the season.
Next up, dancing! And it's oh so good.
Hopefully Nick & Rachel, AKA Blue Journey (18 & 33) will follow up with
a performance of that caliber. They've met formally only FOUR days prior
to this audition, having met only through a mutual friend. They are
combining technology with projection and choreography by David
Middendorp.. whoever he is. It would be spectacular if the parts
that were meant to be in synch were ... in synch. The idea is there, but
the execution is flawed. It doesn't for me translate well to television.
Maybe for the stage, but ultimately it's us they're dancing for. The
judges think it was amazing and "dream-like". Howard even calls it
perfect. They get four yeses.
Next up, an act that doesn't say much...
a mime. Larry the Mime, a 33-year-old. And... well... Words don't do it
justice. Let's just watch the video.
And finally, we have Jaycob Curlee (18,
Daphne, AL), a singer who used music to help him get through a troubled
home life. He's been in foster-care since he was five. Over the years,
he became forgotten... until he was adopted at the age of 8. He pours
that emotion, that love into his music. He's closing us out with a
performance of John Mayer's "Waiting on the World to Change". He's a
simple enough singer. Great, but not spectacular voice, but guy can jam
on an acoustic. The Fifth Judge loves him. And he breaks down on stage
with Mel coming to hug him and Howie offering his support. That says it
all. He's got four yeses.
So far, we've found our feel-good
story... our amazing elder... and the first use of the Golden Buzzer to
save Dustin's Dojo. And to think... we're just beginning.
