In 2011, Simon Cowell's "The
X Factor" finally arrived on American shores, and
Melanie Amaro had it to win $5 million... but no lasting
success. "Fool me
once, shame on you."
In 2012, they tried again
with Tate Stevens as the $5 million man. Ratings
dropped, judges quit, and the only thing they could
really hang their hat on was a band out of the UK known
as One Direction.
"Fool me twice, shame on
me."
The only thing we can say
as we begin season 3 of the World's Biggest Talent
Competition (TM)... Won't be a strike three.
This season, contestants
will audition in four categories: boys, girls, over 25s,
and groups. They'll have to impress Simon Cowell and
Demi Lovato... as well as newcomers Paulina Rubio and
once-and-future mentor Kelly Rowland (she of Destiny's
Child).
LOS ANGELES
Galen Center
First up, Carlito Olivero
(23; Chicago; barista) says he's blessed to have a job,
but he wants to be the Latino Chris Brown. He'll lead
off with "Stay" by Rihanna. Simon likes everything about
him, and that there's no one around like him. Demi says
he's a cross between Frankie J and Trey Songz. He sweeps
the panel.
And thanks to a bit of
Google-fu, we know that Carlito isn't exactly as green
as he comes off...
he was on the MTV series "Making Menudo", having
been in the group when they recorded the single "Lost".
And just like that, we're
headed to...
CHARLESTON, SC
North Charleston Coliseum
Sally Hessnice (55;
Graham, NC; registered nurse) believes she can win this
thing. We'll see with "The Greatest Love Of All"...
which has the longest intro of all. So long that Simon's
wondering when the singing will start. Once it does...
we wish it didn't. "I've just been told that 8000 dogs
have been trying to get into the venue." That's a NO.
It's also a no to Valeria Colombi (41; Boca Raton, FL;
karaoke host), K-nected (13-33; Hamilton, OH; family
group), John Tanner Davis (18; Dallas; student) or ...
whoever the hell these guys are. These "peachy" guys.
Millions of peaches, peaches for me. Millions of
peaches; peaches for free.
LONG ISLAND, NY
Nassau Coliseum
Lillie McCloud (54;
Orlando; mother/grandmother) is here with her daughter.
She wanted for the longest time to be singer. Of course,
by the time you read this, you will already have found
out that
she was ONCE a singer and a rather successful one,
but Fox isn't going to let that get in the way of a
story. Anyway, she sings "Alabaster Box" by Cece Winans.
"Where you been? Where you been hidin'?" Oh, Kelly... if
you only knew. In any event, it's a sweep all around.
NEW ORLEANS
Lakefront Arena
Early in NOLA, it's
not... going... well... for the groups... until we meet
Alex Kinsey & Sierra Deaton (21-22; Orlando;
students/couple). They definitely have chemistry as a
couple, but can it translate into a winning duet on
stage? They will try "Toxic" by Britney Spears,
"somewhat different". It's more acoustic, more barebones
than the version we're used to. The judges are gushing
over the vocals AND over how cute they are as a couple.
Simon, in fact, calls them cool and quirky. It's a yes.
Back in Charleston, we
meet Rion Paige (13; Jacksonville, FL; student) who has
arthrogryposis multiplex congentia, which basically
means that her arms and hands are conjoined backwards
and that she is almost permanently blind in her right
eye. She wants to be treated and judged like any other
contestant. She sings "Blown Away" by Carrie Underwood.
She gets a standing O from the three females on the
panel, while Simon echoes to Rion what he said when he
first met one Carrie Marie Underwood... I think you're
literally extraordinary." A very enthusiastic yes.
And we are only getting
started.... Two more hours tomorrow night.
