Last time, history was made
in the search for the first American Ninja Warrior. The
object: the Warped Wall. The one to scale it into the
history books... one Kacy Catanzaro. In scaling the
Warped Wall, she becomes the first female to complete
the Qualifier. Her story is the stuff that dreams are
made of. But will someone match that feat? Tonight, we start the search for the
American Ninja Warrior anew in...
ST. LOUIS
Downtown St. Louis
It's unseasonably chilly
and a little bit wet as the polar vortex of 2014 starts
to set in. In addition to that, our ninja wannabes will
take on six obstacles, two of them making their ANW
debut.
- Quintuple Steps
- Rolling Log
- Bridge of Blades
- ROPE SWING into Cargo Net. Swing onto two ropes, then
jump for a cargo net.
- DOUBLE TILT LADDER: Move across two sets of tilting
monkey bars.
- Warped Wall - 14 feet, three chances
As before, it's
win-and-in. Hit the buzzer atop the Warped Wall, and you
are guaranteed a spot in the City Final. First up
tonight...
- Pavel Fesyuk (29;
Rochester, NY; exterminator): After taking a selfie....
FAIL Bridge of Blades
- Emily Rhoads (30; Lebanon, IN; scientist): FAIL
Rolling Log
- Brant Axt (21; Minneapolis; engineering student): FAIL
Rope Swing
- Jim Steffen (45; Findlay, OH; professional speaker):
FAIL Double Tilt Ladder
Eric Villanueva...
Shikita Hudson.... Julie Lohre... and Ronald Schmidt...
all failed.
- Bill Westrick (46;
Greenwood, IN; "Wild Bill Westrick, the World's Greatest
Plumber"): FAIL Rolling Log
- Matt Capiccioni (33, Brecksville, OH; professional
wrestler): FAIL Warped Wall. Heartbreak, but it could be
a bit of a blessing in disguise, as he could have made
it far enough to make it to the City Final.
More than a few female
athletes are inspired by what happened last week with
Kacy Catanzaro on the Warped Wall.
- "Super Oleg" Ossayenko
(36; Russia by way of Brooklyn, stuntman): FAIL Double
Tilt Ladder
- Roland Seward (30; Mt. Vernon, NY; Navy veteran):
COMPLETE! (2:12.78) And just like that, Roland is
through to the St. Louis City Final.
A pair of veterans took
early dives, while assistant store manager Scott Maxson
came up short in the Warped Wall. Next up, in a
non-copyrighted costume for 2014... CAPTAIN NBC!
- Jamie Rahn (24;
Barrington, NJ; parkour instructor): COMPLETE! (2:04.61)
- Carlos Canadilla (50; Poughkeepsie, NY; office
products salesman): he's a man who lost his memory in a
rock-climbing accident and is slowly bringing it back to
focus. FAIL: Warped Wall
We're starting to see
some success thanks to Dan Polizzi and Adam "A-Train"
Mihm.
- Michelle Warnky (29;
Columbus; event coordinator): She's at the Wall. Can
history repeat itself? YES! COMPLETE! (3:08.94)
Halfway through the
night, and so far, five players have finished the
course, including Michelle, only the second woman to
summit the Warped Wall. Putting things into
perspective...
- Season 3 (G4/NBC): 14
women competed, no one got past the fourth obstacle
- Season 4 (G4/NBC): 51 women competed, only Luci
Romberg completed the fifth obstacle.
- Season 5 (NBC): 89 women competed, TWO faced off with
the Warped Wall
- This year, TWO have conquered the course out of the 60
women who have challenged the course... so far.
- Joseph Hyndman (25;
Montclair, NJ; graduate student): he had a Facebook
campaign to bring ANW to the Jersey Shore... not this
year, but maybe next year. COMPLETE! (1:32.68)
- Rob Moravsky (22; Bethel, CT; Joe's cousin/model):
COMPLETE! (2:24.80)
Fastforwarding, Michael
Needham finishes.
- Ethan Swanson (23;
Chicago; actuary): COMPLETE! (3:02.73)... BUT... if we
go back to the footage of the Rolling Log, he looked
extremely close to touching the water... and there it
was on the dismount. By rule, it means that he is OUT.
In case you don't know
how cold it is on the ANW course... it's 36 degrees.
- Amy Pajcic (24;
Columbus; veterinary student): FAIL Warped Wall. It may
be enough to get her to the City Finals, provided no one
else finishes.
... but a lot can happen
in 25 minutes. Case in point: Andrew Karsen, Dan
Galiczynski, and Mitch Pajcic (Amy's cousin).
- Brent "Redneck Ninja"
Ruffin (24; Millington, TN; NBA entertainer): COMPLETE!
(2:47.99).
A hard landing for
Michael Bernardo las year. He's back to prove that it
was a fluke...
- Michael Bernardo (34;
Washington, DC; firefighter): FAIL Bridge of Blades
- Travis Rosen (39; Franklin, TN; stock trader): Another
member of Team USA that took down Japan in the USA vs.
Japan Special. COMPLETE! (1:39.55)
Four more competitors
took to the course... Brian Wilczewski and big brother
Chris both finish the course. But newcomer Aaron
Himelright put BOTH to shame. That brings us to the
final run of the night...
- Joe "The Weather Man"
Moravsky (25; Sherman, CT; meteorologist): with the
fastest time of the night, COMPLETE! (1:04.13). his
gain... is Amy Pajcic's loss.
And that brings the total
completions of this course to 25, the most from ANY
qualifier.
