Preliminaries: Temple/Del/Okla
February 10

It's that time of the year again, when many a college senior is ready to take on the world. Today, and every day for the next two weeks, 15 college students are going to take each other on for $100,000 and a possible $250,000 seat in the next Tournament of Champions in Jeopardy's Winter Classic, the College Championship.

What challenges await the brightest collegians in the country? How will they rise to meet them? The answers to these questions could be worth $100,000 for the winner, $50,000 for the first runner-up, and $25,000 for the second runner-up. Semifinalists are guaranteed $10,000, while everyone who competes gets $5000. Any and all prizes depend on how far up a player moves in the standings.

And it all starts, wait for it..... RIGHT NOW!

Daily Double #1: $2000 Ancient History. Whitney is tied this time with $7400 with James. Sarah is back out of the red with $2600. Whitney bets $600 again on this: in 439 AD Genseric the Vandal captured this north African city, which became the Vandal capital. "What is Cairo?" No, it was Carthage, dropping her to $6800.

Daily Double #2: $800 Famous Homes. James leads by $1000, $7800 to Whitney's $6800. Sarah still has $2600. He fronts $1000 on this: Peacefield in Quincy, Massachusetts was the mansion of this man who purchased it in 1787. "Who is John Adams?" RIGHT for $8800!

As always, there are nine spaces in the semifinals reserved for the five game-winners and the four wild-cards, the highest-scoring non-winners.

Final Jeopardy! category: ISLANDS

IN A SATELLITE PHOTO, VOLCANIC ACTIVITY CAN BE SEEN ON THIS 10,000-SQUARE-MILE ISLAND

Correct response: what is Sicily?

Sarah's response: what is Sicily Crete? YOU HAD IT! Wager: $4800. Total: $1400.
James' response: what is Fiji? WRONG. Wager: $9200. Total: $0
Whitney's response: what is Crete? WRONG. Wager: $0. Total: $10,000

SEMIFINALIST: Whitney Thompson

Had Sarah gone with her gut, it would've forced a one-clue tiebreaker. Whitney played a strong front game, but didn't want to play to win in the Final. That'll get her to next week, but it will not get her the win unless she starts playing to win.

Next time, three more students take up Professor Trebek's office hours.
