"Episode 2" - April 19

Last week, we saw Willis McGahee barely make a 165 average, but he did win. Let's see the four bowlers (cough, cough) we have this week -

Dave Mirra - BMX Rider
Bubba Franks - NFL
Cobi Jones - Men's Soccer
Brandi Chastain - Women's Soccer

Brandi is asked what sort of celebration she will have if she wins, and she says that it will be special. Ohhhh-la-laaaaa. Dave says that he's glad that this isn't a contact sports, noting that he'd get crushed. Well, you still may get crushed if you put the ball in the gutter, Dave.

Let's check out the finances. Each first round winner gets $10,000. The wild card gets $5,000. The semi-final winner gets $5,000 and the champion wins $20,000! Someone could be walking off with $35,000! How do I sign up for this?

As we all know, we never see the first game. Let's see what happened there.

Brandi Chastain - 129
Dave Mirra - 122
Bubba Franks - 112
Cobi Jones - 102

Whoa. You go, Brandi. Think of that something special - because you know I will =).

Frame 1 - Cobi gets a good 7 on the first ball (1, 2, 9), but chops the head pin the spare, making it a not-so-good 8. Bubba powers it in there for a strike. Dave hooks it in there but chops off the 3-6-9-10 for a 6. he leaves the 9 on his second shot for 9. Brandi leaves an easy 1-2-4, and only hits the 4 for a total of 8.

Brandi - 137 (On -), Dave - 131 (On -), Bubba - 122 (on X), Cobi - 110 (On -)

As a reminder, a - is an open, a / is a spare. and a x is a strike.

After the Game 1 Highlights (which weren't much), we get to...

Frame 2 - Cobi shoots a nice first ball and leaves a solitary 5 pin. Cobi yells at the pin, then laughs at himself as he misses it. Bubba looks for the double, but leaves the 4 pin. He's a lefty, and with a big sweeping hook, he's going to have a problem making it. Sure enough, he misses. Dave also leaves a 4 pin, but unlike Franks, he converts the spare. This forces Brandi to mark to keep her lead, but she leaves an ugly 8-10. She goes for the miracle conversion - and hits nothing.

Dave - 141 (On /), Brandi - 145 (On -), Bubba - 140 (on -), Cobi - 119 (On -)

Frame 3 - Cobi better do something, or he's going to be as irrelevant as Beard was in the first episode. He delivers and finally hits the 2 to convert a 1 pin spare. Bubba leaves a 7 pin. If he had problems making the 4 pin, he's never going to make the 7. Bubba tries something different - and he would have been good if he was aiming for the 10 pin. Dave gets, on his spare...NOTHING, as he gutters it. He better do something, as he just gave the lead back to Brandi. He gets 9 on the second ball, but Brandi gets the lead back with a 6 count. A Strike will more than satisfy the 6 count requirement.

Brandi - 155 (On X), Dave - 150 (On -), Bubba - 149 (on -), Cobi - 129 (On /)

Frame 4 - Cobi gets a solid 8 on the spare, and an easy conversion on the 1-3 will get him back into this match. He gets nothing but air and Cobi is slowly fading out of the match. Bubba leaves a 2-4 on his first shot, and he may have a shot at the spare here. Putting the ball in the left channel, however, gets him no shot at the spare. Mirra has a nice ball but leaves a stone 10. He uses a flame ball for the spares and throws it right in the right hand channel. Chastain is looking to get a nice lead, but she leaves the 7-9, which is the reverse of the 8-10. At least Chastain gets 1 pin this time around. Both Bubba and Dave are using two balls - and they are both losing to Chastain.

Brandi - 173 (On -), Dave - 159 (On -), Bubba - 157 (on -), Cobi - 145 (On -)

Frame 5 - Cobi has to get a mark here. he leaves another single pin - this time, the 4. He's laughing that he's not getting strikes, but the sad thing is that he'd be in the lead if he was making his spares. At least he gets this one. Bubba switches balls, and gets a 1-3. Now this is a spare that he really should convert - and he finally does so. Dave leaves the 4-7, and this time he converts it. Brandi needs to mark to keep her lead, but leaves the 5-7 split. She has a little 10 pound ball, and she's leaving splits because of the lack of weight on her ball. This is a makeable spare, but she only hits the 5 pin and it's a horse race again.

Brandi - 182 (On -), Dave - 169 (On /), Bubba - 167 (on /), Cobi - 155 (On /)

Frame 6 - Cobi leaves...look, another single pin. This time, it's the 6. he misses it, and that eliminates any margin of error for him - especially since Bubba gets a strike and Dave gets a strike. Brandi needs a mark to keep her lead, but she leaves a 1-2-5-8. This is makeable if she hits it right on the head pin. She hits it right on and makes the spare - BUT she will lose the lead if either Dave or Bubba double.

Brandi - 192 (On /), Dave - 189 (On X), Bubba - 187 (on X), Cobi - 173 (On -)

Frame 7 - Cobi leaves the 1-2. He MUST make the spare to have any shot of contention, and he does as he keeps his fading shot to win alive. Bubba throws the ball out too far and leaves a 1-4 baby split. It's makeable, but he chops the 1 pin. This opens the door wide open for Dave, who capitalizes with a double. Brandi is now in second, but she needs a mark to be in position to catch Dave should he falter. She leaves a very easy 1-2 on his first shot, but she only hits the 2 and Dave can put this one away in the 9th frame.

Dave - 189 (On XX), Brandi - 209 (On -), Bubba - 203 (on -), Cobi - 183 (On /)

Frame 8 - Cobi needs to strike out. He leaves a 1-5 and his match is over. Just for the heck of it, he misses this spare, too. Bubba also needs a strike (or at least a mark) and leaves a 1-3-6. Bubba misses the 6 and his night is pretty much done, too. Brandi can also be done if Dave gets another strike. He gets it, and we have 2 frames and a bowler worth of garbage time. Brandi is the bowler, and she gets the strike, but it's not enough.

Dave - 219 (On XXX), Brandi - 219 (On X), Bubba - 211 (on -), Cobi - 199 (On -)

Frame 9 - Cobi goes 5 and out. Bubba leaves a 10 pin and makes it, but he is playing against Brandi for second, because Dave gets another strike for a 4-bagger. Brandi leaves a 1-2 and converts it to keep her above Bubba for now.

Dave - 249 (On XXXX), Brandi - 239 (On /), Bubba - 221 (on /), Cobi - 204 (On -)

Frame 10 - Another 5 for Cobi. A 4 on the second ball for a 9 for Cobi. Thanks for playing, Cobi. Bubba is looking to get in as a Wild Card. He hits the first strike, but leaves a 1-3-6 on his second ball and finishes with the spare. No one's catching Dave - he's on fire with his 5th straight strike. Make it 6 straight strikes as he buries his second shot. he leaves the 5 on his last shot but he nails a nice 206 in the second game. Brandi needs good count to sew up second place. She leaves the 7-10 instead and puts it between the uprights. That will keep her in second, but Mirra scorches the field.

FINAL
Dave - 328, Brandi - 255, Bubba - 253, Cobi - 213

Dave says that he finally grooved it in the second game, adding that he threw it harder and straighter. Brandi says that Dave stepped up to the line when things mattered. Brandi comes in second, but she will be watching from here on out, because Ephraim Salaam still holds on to the Wild Card score with 296. Hence, we get no celebration from Brandi. Awwwww...=(.

Next Week - Ashly Lali, Terrell Owens, Duane Wade and Leila Ali hit the lanes. Join us in 7 days to see if any of them can hit the pins.
