|
Van Tarpley
(seminary student from La Mesa, CA) |
|
John Dickas
(congressional staffer orig. from Portland, OR) |
Did we say that Michael
came back today? Our mistake. It was William who comes
back today to defend, and he starts with $200 Hide and
Sikh. Van finds the early Daily Double under $800 Red
Rover, Red Rover. In the lead, he bets $600 on the
Danish physicist who gave his name to the NBI. "Who is
Niels Bohr?" Right for $4000.
After playing four more
kiddie games as J! categories, it looks like Van's game
with $9000. John has $3000, and William, the aggressor
in Friday's game, only gets to $2600 to start Double
Jeopardy!...
... but FIRST, a scoring
change benefiting John, as he enters the round with
$5000 now. Now to play, as William takes $400 Let's Go
to Harvard. John finds the first Daily Double under
$1200 Position Papers. He bets $5000 on this: in "The
Federalist", Alexander Hamilton said that "____ing
armies" threaten domestic liberty". "What are massing
armies?" Standing armies put John to $5200. William can
make a move with $1600 Literary Terms. "You're a good
salesman, Alex. Let's go for it." For $11,600... Edmund
Spenser coined the term prothalamion for a poem that
celebrates an impending one of these events. "What is a
wedding?" .... YES! It's a close one with William in the
lead at $17,200, Van not too far off with $16,200, and
John at $9200. He could play spoiler...
Final Jeopardy!
in "Memorials": opened in 2002 in Lower
Manhattan, a memorial to this 1845-1849 tragedy used
Kilkenny limestone. Correct question: What is the Great
Potato Famine?
Both challengers are
right. Can William do the math correctly? YES! By $100,
William wins again with $32,500. He's got $62,500 now. |

On Friday, there was enough
time for Dianne Clooney (Bradenton, FL) to get to
$1,000. Today, she has time for more.
While in NYC, Dianne went to see a show on Broadway
called "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee".
Seems appropriate for a 2nd-grade teacher. She also does
some work at the local community theater in her
hometown, both on and off the stage. Anyway, the game
resumes, and after a couple of questions, she gets to
this...
[$8,000]
In an effort to compete with rival shoe giant Nike,
Adidas announced a takeover of what company in 2005?
A: Reebok
B: Puma
C: Converse
D: New Balance
Dianne asks the audience, but the results aren't pretty.
The studio audience prefers C (34% of the studio
audience; 19% of the AIM users), while the AIM users
prefer A (27%; 42%). So, Dianne uses the 50:50, but that
just leaves A and C. So, we know one audience is right,
but who? After some consideration, she trusts the AIM
audience, saying A... and it's A! Another question
later, and this pops up...
[$25,000]
In 2005, scientists determined that what landmark is
29,017 feet high, 12 feet shorter than when it was
measured in 1975?
A: Pyramid at Giza
B: Victoria Falls
C: Mount Everest
D: Mount Rushmore
Dianne doesn't think it's C or D, then considers B,
figuring that the rushing water could cause the
shortening. So, she goes with B... but it's C! Darn.
Well, she does have $1,000.
Next up is Dave Ley (Manakin Sabot, VA). He's here
because of his wife, and as a birthday present for him,
they both took the test. And though she's smarter, he's
the one in the hot seat. So, she's at the hotel,
available for the Phone-A-Friend lifeline. Good idea.
Anyway, Dave starts by knowing that a popular small
kitchen appliance combines the functions of the toaster
and the oven (though I bet some people would like the
toaster combined with a Chinese takeout menu somehow).
On the way through the lower tier, he faces this...
[$500]
By definition, which of these women's garments is
sleeveless?
A: Blazer
B: Camisole
C: Blouse
D: Turtleneck
Dave asks the audience, and this time, both polls are in
agreement, favoring B (93%; 77%). Dave trusts them...
and they're right! He soon secures the $1,000, then
eventually sees this...
[$4,000]
In 2005, what TV series ran a special live episode
featuring a presidential debate hosted by Forrest
Sawyer?
A: Boston Legal
B: E-Ring
C: Commander In Chief
D: The West Wing
The 50:50 leaves B and D. Dave says D... and he's right!
Another question later, and he has this...
[$16,000]
What singer promotes fair trade, his pet cause, by
wearing tape on his fingers and drawing an equal sign on
his hand?
A: Bono
B: Chris Martin
C: Seal
D: Lenny Kravitz
Dave decides to call his stepdaughter, Beth, who says B
just before time runs out. Dave trusts her... and it's
B! Moving on...
[$25,000]
Established in 1949, East Germany was officially called
the "German" what?
A: People's Federation
B: Representative Union
C: Federal Republic
D: Democratic Republic
Dave isn't really sure at first, but after some
consideration, he goes with D... and he has $25,000!
No more time left for today. Dave tackles the upper tier
tomorrow. |
