Jeopardy! by Chico Alexander, GSNN

Air time:  Check listings or jeopardy.com
Host: Alex Trebek
Deborah Melman-Clement (writer/entrepreneur from Kingston, ON); $3199
Bruce Brown (substitute teacher orig. from Cincinnati)
Matt Bregman (fundraiser from Brooklyn, NY)

The cycle of champions continues, with the latest coming up with only about $3000 and change. Will she make more today?

She starts with $200 Rhymes with "Rain". At the TV time out, it's very close, with Deborah at $2200 to Bruce's $2400. Matt has $1200.

Bruce finds the Daily Double under $800 Medals and Decorations. He bets $3989 of his $4000 on this: the 1st military campaign medal Congress approved, the Manila Bay Medal was known by the name of this admiral.  "Who is Dewey?" Correct for $7989! He leads at the half with $9789 to Deborah's $5400. Matt, who has yet to break out of the pack with $1400, starts Double Jeopardy!...

... with $400 Ancient Greek Drama. Bruce finds the first Daily Double under $1600 small countries. He bets $8917 (weird wagers) on this: the Rhine River provides the western border of this principality. "What is Liechtenstein?" Correct for $19,906! Second Daily Double is under $1600 Screen Queens. Matt bets an even $5000 on this: in a 1971 movie, Vanessa Redgrave & Glenda Jackson reigned supreme as these 2 rival monarchs. "Who are Queen Elizabeth & Queen Mary?" Right for $12,800. He ends up with $14,000 as we end the round. Deborah has $11,800, while Bruce is way out in front with $23,906.

Final Jeopardy! in "American History": this legislative body first met on March 4, 1789, but only 8 of its 22 members were present. Correct question: What is the US Senate?

Bruce only bets a simple $5000 as he takes the crown today with $28,906. Deborah goes back to Canada with $5199.

Host: Meredith Vieira
On Friday, Les Fairbanks (Flushing, NY) made it to $25,000, and has used 2 lifelines on the way. How will he do today?

Les finds this experience to be "pretty cool", compared to others things that he has done. Plus, his family had some advice for him: "Take it easy, don't answer questions too fast, and make some money." Sounds simple enough. With that, the game resumes...

[$50,000]
According to legend, what Russian built a series of fake villages to impress his touring lover, Catherine the Great?
A: Ivan the Terrible
B: Boris Godunov
C: Rasputin
D: Grigori Potemkin

Les says it's not C or D, but he doesn't know what it is, so he switches it out. Turns out that it was D, so that was a good move. Now, let's see what replaces that question...

[$50,000] (Q)
In 2004, what athlete became the first person besides Colonel Sanders to appear on a KFC bucket?
A: Roger Clemens
B: Evander Holyfield
C: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
D: Shaquille O'Neal

Les calls his daughter Alison, but she doesn't give an answer in time. So, Les decides to guess C... and he's right! Next question...

[$100,000]
In the Edgar Rice Burroughs book "Tarzan of the Apes," the name "Tarzan" means what in ape language?
A: Walks tall
B: Fierce temper
C: White skin
D: Smooth hide

Les thinks it's D, but he's not sure enough, so he walks. Good thing he did, because it was C! So, with that, Les walks out with $50,000!

Next up is Monica Byrne (New York, NY). She is a chef, who actually once served former president Bill Clinton. She says the experience was great, and that his home was really nice. She had been through his kitchen, and she even got to meet him! Now, to see if she can go through another great experience, this time in the hot seat. Monica starts by knowing that the pair of royal titles that are also names of the two largest mattress sizes are king and queen (interesting that hanky and panky showed up as D here, considering the mentions of Bill Clinton moments ago). A few questions later, and she faces this...

[$1,000]
What type of food is labeled by the U.S.D.A. with grades ranging from Prime to Select to Canner?
A: Fish
B: Citrus fruits
C: Beef
D: Chicken

Somehow, Monica doesn't know this, so she uses the 50:50. C and D remain. She's still not sure enough, so she calls Doris, who is 100% certain that it's C. Monica trusts her... and she has $1,000! She then steamrolls through most of the middle tier, eventually reaching this one...

[$25,000]
Featured on a nickel newly issued in 2005, "Ocean in view! O! The Joy!" is a quote from what explorer's journal?
A: James Cook
B: Henry Hudson
C: William Clark
D: Walter Raleigh

Monica asks the audience. 62% of the studio audience and 46% of the AIM users say C. But she had an inkling earlier, leaning towards a different answer (she didn't say which one). After a bit, she decides to walk, not sure whether to trust her gut or the audience. Turns out the audience had it right; it was C. Oh well; at least she has $16,000.

In the hot seat now is Leah Goldberg (Chicopee, MA). She's currently unemployed, looking for a job as a paralegal. She could certainly use some money at this point, so Leah starts by knowing that "beats me" is a common way of saying "I have no idea". She easily gets through the lower tier, then soon gets to this...

[$4,000]
A popular bagel topping, lox is believed to get its name from "Lachs," the German word for what?
A: Salmon
B: Butter
C: Onion
D: Tomato

The 50:50 leaves A and D. Leah goes with A... and she's right!

That will do it for today. Leah will be back in the hot seat tomorrow.
