Johnson (Scott,
Amy, Eric, Kelli, Kati); $40,360, three days |
|
Iribe
(Jessica, Juan, Danny, Martin, Vanesa) |
Round 1:
someone who came to you door and you hid pretending not
to be home (6). Scott goes with neighbor, #4. Salesman
is good at #2. Mother-in-law goes under #6. The ex is
#5. That's it for the champs, as the Iribes try
Jehovah's Witnesses for the steal... Number one answer!
That gives'em 33. Other answer: bill collector.
Round 2: a fruit that
might be used in a description of a woman's body (6).
Amy fires with pear, #1. We then get peach, melon, and
the apple bottom, but can the Iribes steal with
strawberry? No. The Johnsons get 92. Other answers:
orange, tomato.
Double Round: a prop you
would need to do a Popeye impersonation with (5). Danny
buzzes in with #4, big forearms. Eric also buzzes in
with a pipe, #1. We also need a sailor hat, a can of
spinach, and a tattoo for the sweep and 288.
Triple Round: most
animals walk on all fours; name an animal that can walk
on two (4). Martin's monkey is three. A bird, a
kangaroo, and people... sweep! The Iribes win, 324-288.
Uncle Juan and Jessica go
to the Fast Money board... and come back with only $555. |

Miranda Schwartz
(copy editor from New York City); $16,801 |
|
Candy Murphy
(federal IT specialist from Brambleton, VA) |
|
Paul Canty
(homemaker from Easthampton, MA) |
Miranda proved why she
was a force to be reckoned with in the last Double
Jeopardy!, but can she sustain that momentum?. She
starts with $200 Magazines. That category houses the
Daily Double under $1000. Candy finds it and bets $1000
of her $2800 here: the woman for whom this magazine is
named is called "orator, union organizer, and hellraiser"
on its masthead. What is "Mother Jones"? Right for
$2800. After a visit to the Nike campus in Oregon, Candy
leads, $7800 to Paul's $5000. Miranda will have to tap
into that late-game energy from yesterday to build off
of her $3600 as she starts Double Jeopardy!...
... with $400 Put On Your
Helmut. Miranda finds the first Daily Double under $800
Short Stories. With $4000 to Candy's $13 large, she bets
$1600 on this: in an 1819 tale, his daughter says about
him, "it's been twenty years since we went away from
home with his gun." "Who is Rip Van Winkle?" Correct for
$5600! Last category is You're Going "In". The Daily
Double under $1600, and Paul finds it, trailing by
$4400. He bets that much on this: it's a polypeptide
hormone produced by the beta cells of the islets of
Langerhans. "What is insulin?" We're tied at $16,600!
That would change as Candy drops to $14,600, Miranda
builds to $4800, and Paul stays at $16,600.
Final Jeopardy!
in "World Capitals": a 1958 coup in this city
ended a monarchy; 10 years of political turmoil
followed, then 35 years of dictatorship. Correct
question: What is Baghdad?
No one is right... and
Paul went whole hog on the question, making Candy the
new champ with $9601. Miranda leaves with $17,801. |

The end of another week at
7800 begins with a home gym for Lora Peiffer, Ronald
"Bob Is My Homie" McCarthy, Catelyn Rydberg, and Ardith
Harris to bid on... It goes to Lora, who gets to
Pushover for a trip to lovely Victoria, BC. The setup: 4
2 6 1 5 0 9 9 6. She pushes to $6150... Should've gone
one more, as the trip was $2615.
Joyce Bueller is down and up
thanks to a Playstation with system, two controllers,
two Eyetoys, two memory cards, and 12 games. All that
swag totals to $675, and Joyce would like to put it all
in the trunk of a 2006 Ford Five Hundred. She can buy it
for as little as a quarter playing Pocket Change. First
number: 2. Second... 4. Third: 6. Fourth: 1. Final: 9.
The bad news: four mistakes mean that the car's now
worth $1.25. Even worse: she only snagged 90 cents in
pocket change, landing a gooseegg on her first pick.
Catelyn gets a pearl
necklace in round 3 after bidding exactly right with
$900. But she'd really like that... plus 100, then
multiplied by 10. So she's playing Grand Game with
these: Uncle Ben's brown rice, Mylanta Classic, VO5 hot
oil, Gold Bond lotion, Dreamfields linguine, and a
Clorox bath wand. Target price: $7.00. She picks the
rice... $1.99, that's $10. She picks the linguine...
$2.59, that's $100. Lotion... $8.99. That's $100.
Should've gone with the VO5 and the Mylanta, as that's
all the money she'll pick up. Lora wins the Showdown
round and a spot at the end of the show.
Ardith hopes to join her,
having won a 42" projection TV. Time for the Bonus Game
with a bedroom and sleep set in the offing. Ardith
controls the windows with a novelty mailbox, alarm
clock, and a toaster oven. Will a cordless phone cost
him that bedroom? NO! She's a winner! And darn it, it's
about time!
Another one-round wonder
in Lana Delahunt, as she wins a washer/dryer and a
chance at a Ford Focus playing the Money Game. The
cards:
48 65 90
80 18 75
17 34 19
Middle number in the car
is 7. She goes with 18... $18. How about 19? Front of
the car! Then comes 65, 75, and 90. Cash, cash, cash.
Lana ends up with $248. Should've gone with the 34.
Last chance for Ronald to
meet his homie on stage... but it's Jordan Macias with a
dinette. He plays Double Prices for double off-roaders
either worth $7855 or $6748. He goes for $7855 and...
and... here comes the last train to Clunkerville. For
Jordan, it has a stopover at Showcase City.
First up, a trip into the
(minds of the) ladies' dressing rooms, where we find a
soda fountain, a hot tub, and a Hi-Lo trailer. Top
winner Lora passes to Jordan, who bids $18,750. Lora
gets a living room with carpeting, an electric
fireplace, and a vertical piano. She bids $13,210.
Actual price: $17,527, a difference of $4317. Now to
Jordan, whose Showcase totals up... $28,016. Lora wins
this one with $19,826 in stuff.
Stats: 1-5, $32,648. |

Who
Wants to Be a Millionaire by Don Harpwood, GSNN

Going into today's show, Bob
Dolmetsch (Arlington Heights, IL) has $1,000, and all
lifelines intact. And you can bet that he's hoping to
win more.
Bob actually tried out 8 times before getting on the
show. Gotta give it to the guy for being persistent. He
then reiterates the fact that he wants to retire, and
adds that he'd like to do so as early as possible. Maybe
if he can get through 10 more questions, he could do so
right away. With that, the game resumes, and he gets
through 2 of them before facing this one...
[$8,000]
In 2005, rap impresario Sean "P. Diddy" Combs changed
his name once again, this time whittling it down to
what?
A: Sean
B: P.
C: Diddy
D: Combs
Bob asks the audience. 82% of the studio audience and
81% of the AIM users pick C. Bob goes with that
answer... and they're right! Another question later, and
this pops up...
[$25,000]
According to NASA, what is the only planet in the solar
system that would be able to float in water?
A: Neptune
B: Uranus
C: Saturn
D: Jupiter
Bob says he's certain that it's D, but he uses the 50:50
anyway, leaving C and D. He goes with D... but he's
wrong! It's C! Darn. Well, he does get $1,000 for his
efforts.
Next up is Elizabeth McCoy (Amarillo, TX). Her husband
bought her a necklace for this taping, which she is
wearing at this point. And attached is a pendant, which
is not hers. A friend of hers, a jeweler, loaned it to
her so she could look like a movie star in that hot
seat. Hey, if she wins the million bucks, she could
almost be as rich as one, too! Elizabeth starts by
knowing that since 1976, Macy's has celebrated the 4th
of July with an elaborate televised display of fireworks
(of course, it ain't pole dancing because, well, there
could be kids watching). She sweeps the lower tier, as
well as most of the middle tier, bringing her to this...
[$25,000]
The largest known depository of gold in the world is a
Federal Reserve Bank located in what U.S. city?
A: Philadelphia
B: Denver
C: New York City
D: San Francisco
After complimenting the intelligence of the audience,
Elizabeth asks them for help. 48% of the studio audience
says B, while 16% says A. But 37% of the AIM users say
A, while 22% says B. It's a tough situation, so
Elizabeth then uses the 50:50. It leaves A and C,
meaning the studio audience was wrong. (BTW, 25% of the
studio audience and 15% of the AIM users said C.) Still
not content, she then calls her sister Cheryl, but
unfortunately, she doesn't give any kind of response.
All out of lifelines, Elizabeth just takes a shot at it
and says C... and she has $25,000! Moving on...
[$50,000]
In the racy French phrase "ménage à trois," the word
"ménage" literally means what?
A: Agreement
B: Household
C: Friendship
D: Discovery
Elizabeth mentions that A, C, and D could all make
sense. (Considering what the whole phrase means, yeah,
that sounds about right.) She then says she wants to use
the 50:50, only to be told that it's gone. So, she
switches the question. It turns out that the answer was
actually B. Seems like a good switch, then, as she now
goes on to this...
[$50,000] (Q)
A National Hockey League puck is how many inches in
diameter?
A: Two
B: Three
C: Four
D: Five
Elizabeth knows that it's either A or B, and goes with
A... but it's B! Good thing she had nothing to lose at
this level, so she heads home $25,000 richer.
And that'll wrap things up for this week. Hopefully,
next week will bring better luck for the next bunch of
contestants. Hopefully. |
