It
Takes a Village
January 7
"I'm Oprah Winfrey... and welcome to the
very first national 'Oprah Winfrey Show'!" With those words, one woman
launched a media empire that would soon captivate the nation and the
world. And now that her time in the limelight is drawing to a close,
it's time to pass the torch to someone who can capture the charisma, the
showmanship, the very essence that is... Oprah.
Naturally, no one at GSNN got the call,
but that's not going to stop us from reviewing this show.
Ten people from all across the country
have arrived at California in order to do battle for a highly coveted
prize, $100,000, a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox, and an opportunity to star in
their own TV show on... well, OWN, following in the footsteps of such
pop-culture doormats as Dr. Phil McGraw, Dr. Mehmet Oz, and not-a-doctor
Rachael Ray.
Hey, you want to be in the elite circle
of "Friends of Oprah", you gotta prove that you belong, right?
The players (and their ideas)...
- Zach Anner, Austin, TX
- has cerebral palsy and a unique perspective on life
- Elizabeth Espinosa,
Los Angeles, CA - current events hound
- Aunt Flora,
Cincinnati, OH - she wants to bring soul to the
kitchen
- Leigh Koechner, Valley
Village, CA - she thinks being a mom doesn't define
her
- Kristina Kuzmic-Crocco,
Alhambra, CA - she likes being "real" in the kitchen.
- Ryan O'Connor, West
Hollywood, CA - thinks America needs a "gay best
friend"
- Dr. Tony Roach,
Abilene, TX - a minister, author, and spiritual coach
- Terey Summers,
Phoenix, AZ - she finds humor in the everyday.
- Alicia Taylor, Las
Vegas, NV - she wants to get America back on the right
financial track.
- Eric Warren, Lawndale,
CA - wants to cook healthy means and lose weight
They'll be tested in
every way possible to see if they have what it takes to
be a star on Oprah's new network. But first, because
this is YARES (yet another reality elimination series),
we have to divide up the teams.
TEAM FOCUS: Ryan, Eric, Zach, Tony,
Alicia
TEAM VISION: Elizabeth, Aunt Flora, Terey, Kristina, Leigh
Basically, men (and Alicia) versus women.
Every week, each team will produce television segments on a given
subject. And you're not just in front of the camera, you are hard at
work behind the scenes doing the grunt work and making it happen. Make
sure you bring your "A" game, because the Big O is going to be watching
you from high ... in Chicago... and if she doesn't like what she sees...
you're outta here.
And so you're not flying blind, you will
be given a guest mentor every week. This week, we're learning about
surrounding yourselves with people who will tell you the truth... and no
one does that better than Dr. Phil.
And speak of the devil, and she appears
out of nowhere. And cue the "squees" of girlish glee. In her defense, we
did the same thing upon seeing Bob Barker for the first time.
The first assignment: sex and
relationships. Vision will ask the men, while Focus will ask the women.
You have 24 hours to choose an "executive producer", decide which two
people from each team will go in front of the cameras with Dr. Phil, and
how you're basically going to steer the ship before going on camera. Dr.
Phil comes out and says it... "You do NOT want to make me look bad."
Because you do such a good job of it yourself.
FOCUS chooses Alicia to be the EP, while
VISION chooses Elizabeth.
Focus needs to come up with a plan before
executing anything. Vision needs to do the research instead of spouting
a bunch of psychobabble (because if anyone knows about that sort of BS,
it's Dr. Phil). So Team Focus lacks vision, and Team Vision lacks focus.
Nice.
Vision's able to get back on track, but
they have to hit their subject matter hard, because they know that
they're going to be attacked. Meanwhile, Focus finally manages to pick a
topic: technology as it pertains to sex. Asking the questions: Ryan and
Zach. When they start, they scare most people away with their very ...
being.. but they "find a mojo". Meanwhile, Vision talks about lack of
protection... down there... leading to happiness. They couldn't find
good enough people to talk on the topic.
On show date, Zach is chosen to present
the video, while Ryan talks with Dr. Phil. Among the topics: sexting.
Zach and Ryan find a way to make it lighthearted while also informative.
Focus found their focus and hit their stride.
Meanwhile, Leigh... loses control of
rehearsal, and Kristina just... loses control. There is a power struggle
in the making, because as you know, it's a scientific fact that all
women hate each other. Hey, Dr. Phil's not the only one who can make
this stuff up.
Watching Team Focus shoot their piece,
it's become obvious that they've raised their game, so now the onus is
on Team Vision to do as good, if not better, than that. Otherwise, one
of them is going home. Kristina and Leigh are chosen to front this
sinking ship... And you know it's bad when you cue the video, and
nothing happens. And when it does happen... it's a disastrous piece. It
just goes all over the place.
And then Leigh cuts him off. What is
this, talk radio?
STAGE 2
Joining the hosts in judgment, Dr. Phil
himself.
Vision says that they tried to stay on
topic. Dr. Phil counters with being able to bring something of worth to
the table, even though what was brought to the table was pretty much
one-note. Dr. Phil says that the host of a show should own some of the
problem... and Leigh refuses to do so.
Focus pretty much controlled the flow of
their show. Even Vision had to give it up for them.
This is an open-and-shut case. The
winners of this first round... TEAM FOCUS! They'll be back next week.
Now it's time to see who's going to "OWN"
the brunt of this error, being the first person to be sent home. Dr.
Phil pretty much sums up the bad timing of the segment as "an insult",
having been talked to for all of 39 seconds.
But it came down to who decided on this
topic... Elizabeth, even though the team didn't agree with it.
Meanwhile, Leigh isn't sure that she's host material. But she's all for
blaming Elizabeth for the loss. And the team is all for agreeing with
THAT.
Two of the teammates will be given one
more chance to save themselves... at the hands of Dr. Phil. On the list:
Leigh, Elizabeth, and Kristina.
But up for elimination tonight...
Elizabeth and Leigh. After a couple of good tries, it comes down to one
cardinal rule...
Your show is your house. You never would
interrupt a guest of your house in the course of their prescribed duties
as such.
Therefore... LEIGH will not be getting
her OWN show.
Nine hosts left. Who'll be relegated to
basic cable light entertainment hell next? Stay tuned...
