Last night, it began again,
the search for the next big superstar. We've found one
boy, one girl, one group, and one over-25. Who will we
find tonight? DENVER
Denver Coliseum
Denver's first contestant
Yosselin Marquez (21; Denver; model) is a BIG fan of
Paulina Rubio's. She wants to become as big, or perhaps
bigger, than Paulina. She hopes to get there with "Only
Girl (in the World)" by Rihanna. Getting lyrics from her
smart phone. Just... NO... NO... NOOOOOO. I'm wasting my
time even watching this. Like what the actual what. "You
don't have the X factor, and Denver hates you."
And it just gets worse
there, right? Here's Thomas Wiederspoon (19; Greeley,
CO; ranch hand) with "Your Man", as covered by Scotty
"It's Bo Time" McCreery. And yes... it gets worse with
Carrigan Bradley (15; Fort Gibson, OK; student), Amber,
and K+B.
Rylie Brown (15; Lee's
Summit, MO) doesn't see much in the way of opportunity
from where she comes. She's been practicing one song
since she got the call to be on the show. The song,
"Clarity" by Zedd featuring Foxes. And... she goes one
line.. and forgets the rest of the song. Once she gets
back her footing, she nails it. So who cares if she
messes up her lines, she has that voice. It's FOUR
yeses.
Jeff Brinkman (36;
Longmont, CO; doggy day care)'s daughter came six weeks
early, which gave him the opportunity to do this. He'll
be doing Joe Cocker, "You Are So Beautiful". Perhaps one
of the most genuine, original voices to come from this
series. He sweeps the panel easily.
LONG ISLAND, NY
Nassau Coliseum
The biggest turnout, over
17,000 people strong, continues to churn out talent with
Jocelyn Hinton (34; Pittsburgh; unemployed)... who sees
herself as up there with the great divas of our day.
We'll see her blow up a little Katy Perry, "Firework".
And... there go the lyrics. And unlike Rylie Brown, she
doesn't have the voice or the charisma to forgive such
things. And then things get desperate. Play her off,
Simon.
Rachel Potter (29;
Nashville; bartender) has dreamt of being a country
singer for a long time. She says that she doesn't want
to live a life of regret, so here she is... Her ID card
says "bartender", but not too long ago,
she was a Broadway star. Funny how this show insults
the intelligence of its audience like that. Like we
don't have access to Google or something. Anyway, here's
Queen's "Somebody to Love". And of course, it's about as
far removed from country as it gets, but she's playing
the game. She's getting her foot in the door. And the
judges are buying it... FOUR yeses.
Taking a break from the
action... and we have Simon being... Simon. That leads
us to a birthday celebration for Paulina... complete
with a piņata of Simon's face.
Let's cool it off with an
ice cream trucker who happens to be lactose intolerant,
Jorge Pena (22; Long Island, NY, ice cream man), who is
a bit of a flirt. His target: Paulina. All he needs it a
bit of Latin flair, right? His song, "Amame (Love Me)"
by Kelly Clarkson featuring Alexandre Pires. "You liked
it?" Awkward silence... ... No one likes his attitude.
But they pass him through.
Simone Torres (19; Port
Jefferson Station, NY; student) calls her townsmen a bit
of a rowdy bunch. Her talent: speed rapping. She's...
not normal, but that's good. She tries out "Mustang
Sally" by Wilson Pickett. The crowd got into it.
She's getting into the crowd right now. It's going to be
a yes here...
Back in Denver, and we
meet Russ Pouliot (56; Littleton, CO; stock trader), a
classically-trained crooner who is on a mission to bring
back the love songs. He offers "Can't Help Falling in
Love" by Elvis. And the king is rolling over in his
extra large grave. Demi thinks that this is what Simon
sounds like when he sings... And I think we're about to
have a moment here... IS SIMON COWELL GOING TO SING FOR
HIS SUPPER?
... Sort of? It's more of
a Russ impersonation.
Roxxy Montana (20-22;
Detroit; sisters) are the Moten sisters Tiara, Tanisha,
and Temperance. Their parents do not know they are here.
They will once this airs. It's "One Night" by Jennifer
Hudson. Temperance was better than the other two
according to Simon. They try again with something
else... and Kelly is excited. They are good together,
but Temperance is the secret weapon. They'll figure this
out eventually, but right now, it's a YES.
And back to Long Island
we go with Al Calderon (19; Glen Cove, NY; restaurant
host), a family-oriented boy whose mother is a sales
analyst and whose father is a sanitation manager. He is
the designated happy birthday singer in his restaurant,
something he wants to get out of. He can't picture doing
it forever, so here he is singing "Sara Smile" by Hall &
Oates. This is an easy yes for having the X factor
written all over him. But there were some tuning issues.
You're going to have to really work on those.
Denise Weeks (41; New
York City; subway singer/single mother) is a subway
busker who sings on the R train for tips. She has this
thought in her mind that she was meant to do something
better. She needs this for her two children. She'll be
singing "The Greatest Love Of All". Simon says that she
was rushing the emotion out of it. He asks her to sing
it without a track. And this will perhaps be the easiest
yes of the night. Make it four...
And that's a good night
from "The X Factor" premiere week. We'll have more of
the best and the worst of auditions in the coming weeks.
