Week 1 - July 18
16 of the top ranked
players of the Professional Darts Corporation will
take on 16 American qualifiers at the Mohegan Sun
casino in Connecticut for the World Series of Darts.
At the end of the tourney, if an American survives
all the rounds of elimination, that person will win
$1,000,000. However, if a participant from Great
Britain wins, that person will win only $100,000.
In the first round of competition, the participants
will play 501 in best-of-11 matches. To put it
simply, the object is to be the first person to set
their own score to 0 by exact count. Those of you
who play 501 darts might know what I'm talking
about. Anyway, here's a look at the first pairing...
1st Match: Isen Vejic [USA], a 29-year old medical
service technician VS. Colin Lloyd [GBR], 32, WR#1
Lloyd won the first match 6-2 taking Isen out of
contention.
2nd Match: Jack "The Big Show" Russel [USA], a
37-year old inventory control specialst VS. Mark "Walshie"
Walsh [GBR], 41, WR#12
It was almost close, but Walshie wins it making it
0-for-2 on the American's side.
3rd Match: Jim "Clean Up Man" Widmayer [USA], a
36-year old sanitation worker VS. Adrian "Jackpot"
Lewis [GBR], 21, WR#16
"Jackpot" had hit the jackpot with 6-0 shutout.
4th Match: Bill "Sticks" Davis [USA], a 47-year old
SAS programmer VS. Denis "The Heat" Ovens [GBR], 49,
WR#9
"The Heat" is on fire with the GBR after winning
6-4.
5th Match: Tom Curtain [USA] VS. Andy Jenkins [GBR]
Andy blitzed ahead of Tom claiming victory 6-1.
6th Match: Roger Carter [USA] VS. Roland Scholten [GBR]
The second verse went the same as the first with a
6-1 victory for Roland.
7th Match: Joe Efler [USA] VS. Dennis Priestley [GBR]
Joe's support from his wift and some didn't help
matters as he lost to Dennis 6-1.
8th Match: Ray "The Razor" Carver [USA], a 32-year
old flooring installer VS. Peter "One Dart" Manley,
43, WR#5
Ray tried to make a comeback, but to no avail as
"One Dart" continues to build on to their winning
streak for the Britons.
Will any more of our Americans keep their million
dollar dream alive, or will they get crushed by the
Brits. The second half of Round 1 action continues
next time on the World Series of Darts.
