Battle
Rounds #1 Thousands of audition tapes.... Hundreds of blind auditions... leading up to this moment, where 48 of America's best singers have to square off and pitch bout in the tradition of their great gladiatorial forebearers to determine who will sing for your vote. And if that isn't bad enough, the steals are in play. Let Battle Commence!
As a reminder, each coach is allowed to steal an artist that has lost a battle. If more than one coach steals, then the power shifts to the artist. The coaches will not be acting alone. Adam will have the counsel of Lady Antebellum's Hilary Scott; Blake, Sheryl Crow; Shakira, Good Charlotte's Joel Madden (also a coach on "The Voice Australia"; and Usher, Pharrell Williams. The first matchup on the bill... #TEAMADAM: Amber Carrington vs. Sasha Allen Amber's a little country girl from Texas. Sasha's a classically-trained pianist from NYC. Their battle cry tonight... "Try" by P!nk. Both have a habit of thinking too much on the song. Remember, don't think... Just sing. Blake says that Amber nailing this song was a pleasant surprise, saying how fierce this battle was. Usher says that a birth of a great artist begins here. Shakira doesn't envy Adam's decision. And speaking of... ADAM CHOOSES: Amber One battle... One upset. And just like that, Usher and Shakira hit the mighty button to STEAL! That's how you play the game. Sasha says.... SHAKIRA. #TEAMSHAKIRA: Garrett Gardner vs. J'Sun Battle of the GWB, as Jersey takes on Brooklyn. Garrett returns after a one-season sabbatical. We learn more about J'Sun, who's here because of his grandmother. Today, they'll take each other on with The Heavy's "How You Like Me Now". Garrett's the rocker. J'Sun's the soulster. Blake likes the stage presence and the falsetto, while praising Garrett for his never-say-die attitude. Usher says J'Sun turned it up while both made us feel like we were in church. SHAKIRA CHOOSES: Garrett As for J'Sun.... NO STEAL. #TEAMBLAKE: Holly Tucker vs. Michelle Raitzin Holly's Texas twang got all four chairs rolling, while Michelle has music literally coursing through her veins. Her great uncle, an opera singer. Her father, a rock star. Her? We'll see after she & Holly battle it out on Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away". Usher thought they were incredible. Shakira thought it was fierce. Adam thought Holly won the battle, but what does Blake think? BLAKE CHOOSES: Holly #TEAMUSHER: Jess Kellner vs. Taylor Beckham It's a battle for the Lone Star State as we have Austin's Jess vs. Dallas' Taylor. They'll be going at it with "You Know I'm No Good" by Amy Winehouse. Both bring different tones to the party, but who will stay around for the hors d'oeuvres? Usher has an interesting gambit: step away from the singers and try and get him to come toward them. Shakira says Jess has a rich voice, but Taylor has the angelic persona. Adam thinks Jess has a big voice, but would pick Taylor. Blake enjoyed Jess more. USHER CHOOSES: Jess Taylor .... was about to say goodbye, but then BLAKE says hello. STEAL! #TEAMBLAKE: Christian Porter vs. The Swon Brothers A Pennsylvania pop-rocker vs. a brother band from Oklahoma. Blake sees a good pairing of ... odd senses of humor. Will that last through "Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty. The coaches love how well the three sound together, with Shakira favoring the brothers and Adam favoring Christian. BLAKE CHOOSES: Swon Bros. Christian says his goodbyes.... and departs with no steal. #TEAMADAM: Judith Hill vs. Karina Iglesias The former backup singer for Michael Jackson from Pasadena takes on the vocal teacher from Miami. Today, the two take on James Brown, "It's a Man's Man's Man's World". It's a great pairing and it's a terrible pairing, meaning that it's going to be an epic battle while Adam's going to have a tough decision to make. Blake echoes the sentiments of everyone in the room in his awe-struck silence. Adam calls this the best battle in "Voice" history... and that he recognizes that the rest of the coaches call him "a stupid person with a bad idea." ADAM CHOOSES: Judith Karina... before she can say goodbye to Adam... GETS PICKED OFF! Welcome to Team Shakira! And after night 1 of the battles...
