"The Calm Before the Storm" - July 14

This is it - the grand finale of Strip Search. We'll see who the final 7 are and how they do on their first night in Vegas. We'll also find out if anyone ever showed up to that performance.

And apparently, they want to cut this as close as possible, because we start on Day 22 and everyone is still in California. The group pack their bags and bus it over to Sin City. The only person with a guaranteed job is Josh, who has been given a script by Billy. His job is to memorize it, because if he screws it up, then the show is screwed up.

We get a quick summary of the events that have happened for the first 7 episodes through the voices of the remaining competitors, then they each talk about how badly they want the job. As they cross into Las Vegas, Rick feels intimidated, while Brian wants to live nice. 'I like to be in the spotlight. I like to take my clothes off. I like to be around females.' Well, there you go.

Billy gets them all in the actual stage where the show will be held and i mmediately calls for a rehearsal. The guys still aren't all coordinated, which concerns both Billy and Sharon. Sharon stops the rehearsal and gives them stage shots. Billy sees that the guys are very uncomfortable on stage and see them screwing up their moves and lines.

Billy is starting to regret the decision to give Josh the emcee role. Josh is going through his script and he sounds like a brick. They both have words and Billy comes down to talk to Josh. Billy reminds him that he's the boss, and to learn the script and get the job done. Josh is under stress. Watching this is Rick, who is wondering if he may get a second shot at the hosting gig. Hmmm...

Terry is concerned that he isn't confident enough in his moves to exude personality. Billy is still not sure if they are going to pull it off and he reminds them all that they have a show to do. Right now, he's not sure that they are going to pull it off.

After the rehearsal, Billy sits them all down. After giving a spiel, he says that he is ready to select more guys to be in the show. Brian thinks that he has a good shot, but Sean has a better shot, because he's the first person selected. The second guy is...Ryan. Billy says that they have both worked hard and have done everything right. Person number three is...Tony. Billy loves how Tony is out of his shell. That gets a look of concern from Terry - which even grows larger when Adam gets spot #4.

Billy says that he doesn't know who the last 2 spots should be going to. This is a group decision between Terry, Rick and Brian. Rick has never had this feeling that he could be rejected, while Terry would be pissed if he didn't get in and Brian is stunned. He talks to Ryan and Sean as Brian promises that he will be part of the troupe. Brian would also bet his right nut that Terry is in - which means that Rick is out. Everyone believes that, including Rick, who is getting angrier and angrier. This is, of course, reality television, which means that Rick is probably in. Who's out?

Now that 5 of the guys have been selected, Sharon brings the guys down to allocate roles for the All-American Show. Ryan is going to be Christopher Columbus, while Sean s going to be a fighter pilot. Adam's going to be a businessman (wha?) while Tony is going to be a pimp (WHA?). Well, that's all-American...I guess.

The 2 roles left are going to be auditioned by the other 3 guys. Everyone else will be sent on their own to work on their roles. Billy gives the guys critiques, but Billy shares everyone thoughts - including mine - How are you going to be able to work on a role that you don't know is yours?

While the other 5 are trying out pilgrim outfits, Brian is trying out velcro pants. Helping out is Jose, who is the clothing designer. Billy tells Josh that for the dress rehearsal, he needs to have the script memorized. Billy asks Rachel, who is sitting out in the audience, to be the audience and be the target of the guys fondling. Rachel has no problem with that, and based on the mont age coming up, the guys had no problem obliging as well.

Rick is fed up with not knowing if he's in the show, but Terry tells him that he can't worry about it and has to learn everything. Rick and Brian are both going nuts, but Terry is taking it very well. I would be stunned if Terry doesn't get in.

Rick will feel a lot better when he sees Brian's rehearsal. He accidentally takes his pants off when he wasn't supposed to. Oops. Billy tells him to rip off the pants, but they won't come off and Brian gets yelled at some more. Billy yells at Jose, who promptly tells him off and says that he either needs help or Billy is getting a new clothing person. Billy is incredulous that someone would talk back to him, but he doesn't press the issue and Jose reaffirms him that the clothes will be fixed.

24 Hours before Showtime - Rachel explains that for someone, it's going to suck. Sharon is going to make sure their lives suck even more, as she comes into the guys rooms and calls Terry, Rick and Brian over to work on some final moves. Rick explains how frustrating it is because they don't know the moves - nor are they going to because they don't know the order until the last person is eliminated. Sharon tries to allay their fears...

...but it's not going to do much when there's 6 hours left and we STILL don't know who the last 2 people are. Even the guys who are in the troupe are complaining that they don't know who is in. That's going to change right now as Billy calls them over. After a heartfelt speech (blah blah blah) about how hard it's been (blah blah blah blah) and how hard they worked (blah blah blah blah blah), Billy is going to announce the two people who are going to go in. The first person is...Terry. That's pretty much a given and Terry hugs his brother Tony. Tony says that with his brother there, that things are complete.

Things aren't complete yet, because Billy has to select one more person. After more blathering about how hard each person is working, Billy gives the last spot to...Rick. All Rick can do is puts his head down and lean it against Terry's shoulder. Brian just sits there, stone-faced. Brian believed that everyone was pulling for him and he thought that Billy made a wrong decision, adding that Billy was only around when he screwed up and not when he was outperforming Rick. As for Rick, he was thrilled that he got the spot, but upset that it was at Brian's behalf. Brian's glad that they all card for him and he loves them all like brothers. The guys are told by Billy that they should all be happy and they will be performing in 3 hours, but the room feels more like a funeral dirge. Terry asks if Brian can stick around and watch, and Billy says that he will ask Brian.

Billy leaves, and the guys are still in a state of shock. Josh yells at the camera to get out of his face while he's hugging Sharon, while Billy comes up to talk to Brian, who feels crushed. Billy asks Brian if he would stay, and Brian says yes immediately. He hugs Billy and thanks him for the opportunity, and Billy reminds him that if anyone drops out, then Brian will get a shot at a future role. Billy comes up to tell the guys that Brian is going to stay, and adds that they aren't going to lose any friendship out of it. Billy and Josh share a hug and Billy goes to hug the rest of the guys. AwwwwBarf.

We're one hour before showtime. Josh is ready and jumping around, while Rachel is nervous and will give it up for the guys who have been doing this for 25 days. Rick says that he is going to justify Rick's decision to keep him, while Brian, chugging his beer, thinks that this is going to be painful to watch - but painful because he's not going to be in it, while he thinks the guys are going to be great.

With that, we get to see John intro the guys, who do their introduction act. Terry is still wondering if it's real while Tony is thrilled to be doing it with his brother. We see montages of the guys working together...and not too good, as Sean screws up (which he admits). Ryan says that it blows his mind to be doing this stuff. While they are performing, we get to see the individual solos. Rick winds up with the Indian skit that Brian messed up on - and his headdress fell off. Rick still got it together and he showed the poise that Brian didn't show in the rehearsal. Touche'.

We also got to see the businessman and the pilot while Josh was soothing over the crowd in his southern accent. The guys finish up with their exit theme and the crowd seemed to enjoy it. Josh called it the best experience of his life and Billy calls it surreal, adding that he didn't expect the women to react that they did and the guys pulled it off. 'I could not be more happy with these 7 guys. I feel like I've picked the right guys, I feel like they'll do the show proud, and I feel like the skies the limit.' The guys come back up and end the show. Fade to black. End of series.

My take? I tried to like this show. I REALLY tried. The guys weren't that bad, and it seems like they got their act together DESPITE Billy Cross, not because of him. And that's where I have my problems with the show. Cross is not only not likable, but his selections and rationale left me questioning his every move. The editing was also lacking - we know more about the people who got eliminated than we know about the people who are actually on the show. Do you know anything about Adam? Sean? Ryan? No? Well, me neither.

The show itself wasn't brutal, but it could have been a lot better. The show suffered from 'Bachelor' syndrome - not enough knowledge about the people who made the show and a dislike of the main protagonist gives this one a C-. It's not awful, but it should have been a lot better. Next time, have Rachel Perry make the decisions, as she seems to be the only sane one there.

Hopefully I haven't stripped the excitement, while you will be searching for season 2 - if there is a season 2. This is Gordon Pepper, thanking you for reading these recaps.
