Round of 14 - July 11

Last time, Phil, Matt, and Chris were put in the danger's edge, but Matt Hoffer was the first person eliminated. Fourteen rockers remain, and competition is only going to get harder. "Everybody do their best."

First up, Magni takes on the Who with "My Generation."

What they say: Jason says "Great control." Tommy thought it was a little "ho hum."

What we say: Went from Vegas to Dirty Vegas in one week.

Next, Jenny Galt takes on Softcell with "Tainted Love".

What they say: Gilby wasn't crazy about the beginning. Dave likes she was making an old star work.

What we say: too static on stage. Not exactly a winning performance. And I could've sworn that she was seizing on stage at the end.

Next, Jill Gioia hopes to blow up on stage again with Hole's "Violet."

What they say: Dave likes that she's willing to get dirty, but called the Courtney Love impersonation "uncomfortable." Jill retorts, but Dave totally has her number on that. Gilby: "I think you're a better singer than you just screamed."

What we say: just because you're performing Hole doesn't mean you have to look or sound like Courtney Love.

Next, Zayra Alvarez really gets us with "You Really Got Me" by the Kinks.

What they say: Gilby... "I don't think you have a clue as to what we're looking for as a singer. Do you even own a record that any of us were even on?" Tommy calls it excellent.

What we say: good arrangement, but too bad the pitch doesn't match up to it at times. And no, having an orgasm on stage doesn't help.

Last time, Chris Pierson was on the verge of elimination, but he lived on to perform "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand.

What they say: Dave thinks that it's something like a winner of a charity contest going to sing with a band. Jason thinks he needs to work on who he is.

What we say: To survive, he needed something straight forward. He got it, but I would've arranged it better. Oh and he looks like a lounge act.

Dilana was last week's encore, as she tries to follow it up with Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire."

What they say: Dave: "You took a classic Johnny Cash song, and you changed it into that? (Beat)... It was AWESOME!" Tommy and Gilby agree.

What we say: "C'mon sing it with me" is something the Man in Black would NEVER say. But the stripped down version more than makes up for it.

Last time, Josh Logan offered funk and soul to the judges. This week, he'll continue his funk-soul brother vibe with... "With Arms Wide Open" by Creed? Wha? Oh well...

What they say: Dave calls him one of the greatest singers he's heard in a while, but that was "average".

What we say: It was for his son. He had to. Meanwhile, he managed to put a little sauce on what was originally a milquetoast song to begin with. But still, it's sauce on nothing, so basically... it was all sauce. Did that make any sense?

Last time, Phil Ritchie was put in the bottom. This week, he comes back with a vengeance... The song: "If You Could Only See" by Tonic.

What they say: Tommy likes the way he sings on this. That's Jason's problem.  "I have to close my eyes to enjoy your voice."

What we say: sounds like he's stoned. Probably good for this song.

Next, two words... Storm Large. She sings "Surrender" by Cheap Trick.

What they say: Jason calls her infectious. Dave calls her voice "huge", but it felt like "Cats". "I want you to have character, I don't want you to be a character."

What we say: Storm makes something out of nothing. This was the right song for her, but instead of taking it where it needed to go, she just seemed content to ride it out.

Patrice Pike straps in for Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box".

What they say: Dave calls her on a lyric flub. Tommy offers to buy her a new guitar strap.

What we say: Now if you're going to carry a cherry axe on stage, you better know how to use it. That said... she was at her best when she was using it... and when she wasn't using it... she was just a really average singer.

Next, Lukas Rossi tones it down for "Don't Panic" by Coldplay.

What they say: Dave says he's got a foot in the future. Jason says that he's constricting himself. Tommy, to that, says... "Shut up." Dave reiterates that he has to take care of his instrument.

What we say: Agreed with Dave.

Ryan Star is going back to basics with the Stones' "Jumping Jack Flash."

What they say: Dave: "When you got going, I kinda started falling asleep... then you had all the energy in the world." Tommy: "Mick Jagger was a showboat... so show me some boat... Bitch."

What we say: Going into the crowd... a first on this series. Bold move. And the vocal wasn't that bad either.

Next, the youngest rocker Dana Andrews is taking on "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf.

What they say: Gilby is waiting for the dirty rock to come out. Tommy: "I've got four words for you. Born to be mild." Jason wants her to blow up the mic.

What we say: She's there with a mission, and you can tell that from her performance. Although the vocal wasn't that good, the performance was. So there you go. It was a mixed bag, but a good one.

Last rocker... Toby Rand takes on the Killers with "Somebody Told Me."

What they say: Gilby calls him the perfect example of picking the right tune. Dave: "You are dialed."

What we say: Good switch from one flavor of Toby to another. He's right at home on the stage, and he makes the arrangement work.

That's the show, which means voting is now open. And at the end of the show, worldwide votes have put Jill, Chris, and Zayra in the bottom three. Will that change? Find out in 23.
