End of the Road: Soggy Dry Lake to Santa Monica
August 24

Seven families left Chicago on the adventure of a lifetime, an RV vacation down Historic Route 66. Along the way, they encountered strange obstacles, winding roads, and your standard fare of reality unknowns. Five families fell by the wayside, leaving the final two... Chicago favorites the Cootes and Yonkers underdogs the DiSalvatores. Both families overcame incredible odds to be at this juncture, but now... it's all about one more challenge... the final challenge at the end of Route 66.

We begin the journey where we left off last time at...

SOGGY DRY LAKE, CA
A soggy dry lake bed.

The DiSalvatores are regrouping for the ultimate challenge. "The Cootes have been winning for quite some time now. It's time that the DiSalvatores showed them what it's like to lose."

The next morning, Reno meets the final two families with info on the final leg... Each family is going to get a cube, the first of four cubes that will get them to the final challenge. The other three are hidden all over Los Angeles. On each cube, there are five sides that will lead you to the next cube. On the sixth side, there is a picture that, when united with the sixth sides from the other three cubes, will be a picture of the venue for the final End of the Road Challenge.

Everyone has their cubes... LET'S GO TO LOS ANGELES!

Cube 1 will send the families to LAX... once the DiSalvatores decide who's driving. The Cootes, on the other hand, are already on their way. The families are given their second cube by a fifth member of their family waiting at Gate 3. The DiSalvatores are greeted by Amy's mom... who the Cootes try inadvertently to intercept. Meanwhile, Jenn Coote's mom arrives with THEIR second cube.

Cube 2 will send the families to Universal Studios Hollywood (C-Note: Universal Studios is owned by NBC Universal, obviously). Meanwhile, the families enjoy some good-old-fashioned catching up. And while the DiSalvatores are busy catching up with Amy's mom, Jenn Coote is just concentrated on one thing... winning... never mind that little Jake just bumped his noggin on that cube. The families arrive at the Studio Tour (C-Note: Good stuff, I highly recommend it), and at the end of the Tour, we find... cube #3 at the end of Jaws. Blake was so excited that he took the wrong cube. Mason has the right one. Now give it back to the Cootes.. there's a good boy.

Cube 3 will send the families to... the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. The families have... the most awkward dinner ever, as we recall that time that Amy called the Cootes cheaters and that Keith mocked Silvio on the zipline. Next morning, the families join Reno for breakfast... and a little cube to wash it down.

Cube 4... and all the other cubes combined... lead them to...

SANTA MONICA, CA - FINISH LINE
Santa Monica Pier

Silvio gathers the family together. He wants to win this to help his family out financially. As for the Cootes... Jenn says that the kids will enjoy Santa Monica Pier... after winning the $100,000.

END OF THE ROAD CHALLENGE: Road Trip Scrapbook

The stakes are high today. One family will win... a free year of gas from Shell... a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood... four round trip tickets from Southwest Airlines... and of course $100,000.

On a map, there are eight missing picture frames and eight cubes that need to go in their proper order in them. The first family to do that wins the Great American Road Trip.

The pictures are in order...

- Wrigley Field
- 66 Drive In Theatre
- Big Texan
- Midpoint Cafe
- Grand Canyon
- Las Vegas
- Oatman, AZ
- Santa Monica Pier

Be careful, though, because there are some pictures of the family in places where they did not visit.

And the final challenge begins... NOW! The Cootes start strong with the first three locations. The DiSalvatores are confused about the Lincoln Memorial and the Golden Gate Bridge. They'll have to start working together if they want to catch up.

The Cootes think that they're right... they aren't. They're getting Niagara Falls mixed up with the Hoover Dam. They're tripped up by Oatman, AZ. That picture didn't look familiar to them, and they can't place it.

As for the DiSalvatores, they keep yelling at each other. Mason needs to think. He's been taking the vacation in, so Amy finally decides to listen. Mason finally looks at Arizona and sees two spots instead of one. "WHERE'S OATMAN?!" Now there are two in Texas. "GET MIDPOINT CAFE!"

The Cootes turn into one giant mess... and the DiSalvatores... are still wrong. One switch later...  AND THE DISALVATORE FAMILY HAVE WON THE GREAT AMERICAN ROAD TRIP! They get the title of the Ultimate Kings of the Road, the $100,000... and everything that comes with. There's been a lot of arguing and a lot of cursing... but the family came together when they needed to most. As for the Cootes... they're proud of each other.

So that's it. Seven families... 2500 miles... and the road ends with the DiSalvatore family and $100,000. Will we see NBC mount another $100,000 race across America? That's for network brass to decide. But until then... go out and see America! It's waiting for you!
