Round of
5
August 2
It's time to get your
laugh on, which means that I shouldn't be watching Craig
Robinson do an opening monologue. But he will and I'm
stuck watching it. Just a reminder as to what I thought
last week. Here's your rankings:
Myq Kaplan
Roy Wood Jr.
Tommy Johnagin
Mike DeStefano
Felipe Esparza
Johnathan Thymius
Now this is the last night of performances. One of these
6 will not be eligible to make it to the finals. That
comic, to be announced immediately (no high pressure
waiting this week? Guess not) is...Johnathan Thymius?
Wow. I thought he had a bad night last week, but I
thought America would have bailed him out with his
strong performances. Guess not. And he misses the Last
Comic Standing Tour. Aw. But we do have an hour of
comedy ahead.
And we start it off with Roy Wood Jr., who talks about
the wrong shows on NBC, remembering lies from
adulterers, and guys who need wristbands to defend
themselves from the cops. As the judges prattle on about
nothing, I'll say this: This wasn't a bad set, but I
don't think it's the one that's going to give him
$250,000.
Tommy Johnagin, who got his inspiration from David
Letterman, is next up. He's got a redneck uncle who
stole a port-o-potty, going to the gynecologist at age
13, and hitting a deer at 70 miles an hour. Not a bad
set, but not as good as his prior sets and I don't see
him winning this either.
Myq Kaplan is looking for love and acceptance. He gets a
standing ovation as he talks about prejudice in marriage
(and uses wristbands and Tommy Johnagin's jokes) talking
about segretgation (not having people marry anyone else)
and gay people (have them marry anyone else but each
other). He also talks about banning drinking, then
letting women vote, then bringing women in. He brings
back the Street Vagina joke and gets another standing
ovation. It was a great set, and that's the one that you
want to leave the audience with.
Felpie Esparza (who gets another round of applause)
talks about watching the oven as a kid for a tv. cooking
with lard (and having a heart attack at 12), talks about
giving the heimlich maneuver and being accused of being
gay, like his brother who can have any guy but he's gay.
'It's like having super powers but not wanting to rescue
nobody.' That is easily his best set of his appearances
on the show and like Kaplan, this is how you want to end
your time on the show. Good stuff.
Finally, we have Mike DeStefano. He hates ugly scary
religious people who calls them bad advertising, like
Mel Gibson (which gets Awwws from the audience). He
tells the homeless guys to pay more attention when
there's money on the ground. He brings back the hammer
joke and talks about gangsta rappers who claim that
Jesus saved them. According to Mike, it's because black
guys are bad shots and if you had Italians, it would
only take 2 shots. It was a cute set, but not as good as
some of his earlier stuff and not as good as either Myq
or Felipe.
Blah blah Ron White skit which I'm not bothering to
recap blah blah blah...
FINAL POWER RANKINGS
Myq Kaplan
Felpie Esparza
Mike DeStefano
Roy Wood Jr.
Tommy Johnagin
Surprisingly, this was the best night of the season. All
5 comics were good. No duds in the bunch. Makes it a
good night for comedy. So who wins?
So Myq Kaplan, the person who helped me out on my pilot,
gave me my favorite skit. Do I think he's going to win?
Unfortunately, no. I think Felipe, who had a stronger
fan base and who gave broader material, has the inside
track here. I think both Myq and Mike round out your Top
3. Join us in 7 days to see who will be the Last Comic
Standing.
