Preliminaries: Harvard/TAMU/Vandy
February 13

It's that time of the year again, when many a college senior is ready to take on the world. Today, and every day for the next two weeks, 15 college students are going to take each other on for $100,000 and a possible $250,000 seat in the next Tournament of Champions in Jeopardy's Winter Classic, the College Championship.

What challenges await the brightest collegians in the country? How will they rise to meet them? The answers to these questions could be worth $100,000 for the winner, $50,000 for the first runner-up, and $25,000 for the second runner-up. Semifinalists are guaranteed $10,000, while everyone who competes gets $5000. Any and all prizes depend on how far up a player moves in the standings.

We have three semifinalists now, but in 30 minutes, we'll have six. Let's go!

Daily Double: $1000 Historic Americans. Tucker has $4200 and the lead to Eric's $1200 and Julia's $0. He bets $2015 (C-Note: his graduation year, I'm guessing) on this: like his cousin Charles, Thomas Pinckney served as governor of this state. "What is New York?" No, it was South Carolina, leaving him with $2185.

At the end of Jeopardy!... Julia gets dinged for an incorrect ruling.

Daily Double #1: $1200 The Elements. Julia gets the first two clues and is back in the thick of it with $2200 to Eric's $5600. Tucker has $4785. She's going for it on this: Martin Klaproth discovered this element in 1789 & named it for a discovery of 1781. "What is uranium?" FOR THE DOUBLER, $4400!

Daily Double #2: $800 Name the Shakespeare Play. Julia just pulls ahead of Tucker, $4800 to $4785, and can now take the lead away from Eric ($7200). She bets $4000 on this: 2 young royal brothers go missing, never to be seen again. "What is 'The Comedy Of Errors'?" No, it's "Richard III", leaving her with $800.

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

Eric's response: what is Arlington National Cemetery? :) CORRECT. Wager doesn't matter.

SEMIFINALIST: Eric Turner

Eric has all the reason in the world to be happy. Today, he gets another reason, as he's guaranteed a slot in the semis thanks to a strong front game, especially late in the Double Jeopardy! round. He will join game-winners Terry O'Shea, Whitney Thompson, and Ben Juster in the next round.

... and joining them will be leading wild-cards Julia from today's match and Kevin from yesterday's match. On the bubble: Laurie from Tuesday, and Tucker from today.

Which also means, officially....
