It's that time of the year again, when
many a college senior is ready to take on the world. Today, and every
day for the next two weeks, 15 college students are going to take each
other on for $100,000 and a possible $250,000 seat in the next
Tournament of Champions in Jeopardy's Winter Classic, the College
Championship.
What challenges await the brightest
collegians in the country? How will they rise to meet them? The answers
to these questions could be worth $100,000 for the winner, $50,000 for
the first runner-up, and $25,000 for the second runner-up. Semifinalists
are guaranteed $10,000, while everyone who competes gets $5000. Any and
all prizes depend on how far up a player moves in the standings.
So far, we have one player - Whitney
Thompson - through to next week. Who will join her out of these three?

you.

Daily Double: $600 Just a Word
Before Going. Cameron is tied with Ben for the lead, $200. Laurie yet to score.
The Dookie bets $1000 on this: a final manifesto attributed to him in 1883 was
"Last words are for fools who haven't said enough". "Who is Marx?" Karl Marx is
right for $1200.

Daily Double #1: $2000
19th Century Books & Authors. Cameron is within
striking distance of the lead with $6200 to Ben's
$10,400. Laurie has $4800. He goes $800 on this:
between 1872 & 1882 she wrote 6 volumes of "Aunt
Jo's Scrap-Bag". "Who is Austen?" No, it was Louisa
May Alcott, you silly Dookie. He goes down to $5400.
Daily Double #2: $800 King Me. Now
LAURIE has half of Ben's total, $5200 to his $10,400. Cameron is still at $5400.
She fronts $1000 on this: in 1922 King Victor Emmanuel III refused to proclaim
martial law to stop this man's march on Rome. "Who is Mussolini?" RIGHT for
$6200!

It was
previously reported that a tie is resolved by a one-clue
showdown. That was an error. A tie in the quarterfinals
results in both players getting through and one less
wild card. That said, Ben can wager nothing and still
assure himself of a spot next week.

Correct response: what is "more
years" (@barackobama)?
Cameron's response: what is more years? CORRECT. Wager: $5400. Total:
$10,800.
Laurie's' response: what is more years? CORRECT. Wager: $5200. Total:
$13,400.
Ben's response: what is more years? CORRECT. Wager doesn't matter.
SEMIFINALIST: Ben Juster
Pardon me
for a moment...
Again, it
didn't really matter that Ben wagered nothing. He was
locked into a spot due to Laurie having half of his
total. He now emerges as one to watch, as, truthfully,
do the other two players. They didn't have a strong
front game going in, but we will probably see them again
in the semi thanks to this Final.
We start
cutting players tomorrow.
