Semifinals: Hill/Yozamp/Missaghi
February
8

Last week, the 15 students battled it out in five elimination matches. Five winners and four wild cards came out of those matches, and now we've reached the critical semifinal phase. It's win-or-go-home as the final nine compete for only three spots in Thursday and Friday's final.  At stake: $100,000, the title of 2010 Jeopardy! College Champion, and a berth in the next Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions.

Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

Our first semi-final...

James Hill III

Nick Yozamp

Samira Missaghi

THE BIG 10

One final category, Stamps... Where is that pesky...

Daily Double: $1000 Stamps. Nick finds it with $6200. James is ahead by a clue with $6400. Samira has $1200. Nick bets $1800 on this: the Distinguished Marines series honors this man for whom a North Carolina Marine Corps base was named. "Who is Lejeune?" I know this, because I was there. That... would be the right answer. Instead, Nick goes with MacArthur for $1400.

At the end of Jeopardy! round...

$6,400 $4,400 $1,400
James Nick Samira

WORDS

Daily Double #1: $1600 the Big 10-Letter Words. Samira has $3800 to Nick's $4400. James has $12,800. She bets two large on this: the report's back from the lab; it's the science dealing with the detection of poisons. "What is toxicology?" I know this, because that's what I do for a living. Samira... times out, dropping to $1800. Not a good time to time out.

Daily Double #2: $1600 Facial Expressions. With $3000 to Nick's $4400 and James' $15,600, Samira needs a big move QUICKLY. She goes $2000 again on this: Jack Nicholson movie villain known for his rictus. "Who is the Joker?" Should've bet it all. She has $5000. And we have bad news for her at the end of Double Jeopardy!...

$16,000 $10,800 $5,000
James Nick Samira

Now Samira's not completely out of it. As long as you have a chip, you have a chance, but for her, she has to bet it all and hope that James and Nick do something stupid.

As for the two men, this comes from our friends at J-Archive.com:

- Nick wins if... he bets between nothing and $400 and is right, while James bets to cover him and misses.
- James wins if... he bets between $5601 (covering Nick) and $5999 (covering Samira) and is correct.

Final Jeopardy! category: RANKS & TITLES

OWAIN GLYNDWR, WHO DIED CIRCA 1416, WAS THE LAST NATIVE OF HIS COUNTRY TO CLAIM THIS TITLE

Correct response: what is the Prince of Wales?

Samira's response: what is King of Wales? WRONG. Wager: $5000. Total: $0.
Nick's response: what is Prince of Wales? CORRECT. Wager: $5201. Total: $16,001.
James' response: what is King of Scotland? WRONG. Wager doesn't matter

FINALIST: Nick Yozamp

Nick better write a thank-you card to James for missing it, because Nick slipped, tripped, busted his lip, and fell on the spot in the Final. Had he missed it and Samira gotten it, she would've been back in play. He can't afford to build up a bank in the front game and throw it away again.

Next three finalists tomorrow.
