In 1984, "Jeopardy!", the
Merv Griffin creation that provided the answers and
asked for the questions, returned to the airwaves in
first-run syndication. Thirty years and more than 6000
episodes later, it stands as the gold standard for quiz
shows today, and this year, we celebrate with a
year-long tournament featuring some of the greatest
champions to ever play the game: The Battle of the
Decades. After 30
years, hundreds of champions, and millions of dollars in
prize money, it all comes down to this: We have the one
day record holder in ROGER CRAIG, the longest winning
streak holder in KEN JENNINGS, and the biggest money
winner in BRAD RUTTER. One of these men will be the
Battle of the Decades winner and $1 million dollars
richer!
First runner-up gets
$100,000, while the second runner-up takes away $50,000.
A Million Dollar Moment
30 years in the making is only 30 minutes away....

It is not
looking good in the first half of the J! round with both
Brad & Ken in negative numbers early. At the break, Brad
has -$800 still to Ken's $4600. Roger has $600.
Daily
Double: $800 Organizations. Brad has the clue, but he's
also $200 in the hole. He bets $1000 on this: now one
big happy family, this mentoring group was formed by the
union of 2 "sibling" organizations in 1977. "What are
the Big Brothers Big Sisters?" GOT IT for $800!

Daily Double
#1: $1200 Lakes & Rivers. Roger has correctly responded
to all 4 clues given him so far, giving him $10,400.
Despite being warned by Brad.... Roger's GOING FOR IT!
For $20,800.... Sharing the name of a city, it's the
largest lake entirely within a Canadian province. "What
is... Lake... Manitoba?"
MANITOBA IS
NOT A CITY! (C-Note: to appease to Canada's official
policy on bilingualism: MANITOBA N'EST PAS UNE VILLE!)
It was Winnipeg.
Daily Double
#2: $1600 Nonfiction. Brad has $2600 to Ken's $7600. He
bets only $2000 on this: the title of this essay
collection by David Sedaris refers to his attempt to
learn to speak French. "What is 'Me Talk Pretty One
Day'?" RIGHT for $4600!

The good
news for Roger... he has $2000. The bad news, because
Ken has $7000 banked and the best that Roger can do is
$4000, it's all over but the crying for him.
If Brad were
to double up and be correct, he would have $33,600. If
Ken were to do the same, he would have $33,200. So Brad
has to wager $11,401 and be correct to put it away.
In
essence... and as if it were written as a melodrama, the
ultimate tournament with the ultimate stakes for the
ultimate prize on the ultimate day... is going to come
down to one million-dollar game of whose balls are
bigger, yours or mine?

CORRECT. Wager: $2000. Total: $4000.
Brad's
response: who are Buchanan & Rice? Wager: $0. Total:
$11,800.
Clearly,
Brad is hoping that Ken is incorrect...
Ken's
response: who are Buchanan & Albright? Wager doesn't
