Melissa & Annabel
July 19
Welcome to this edition of "It's Worth
What?" I have to say before I start this that this is probably gonna be
the most jaw-dropping review I’ve ever done, mostly because you, and I,
as a matter of fact, are gonna be shocked frequently by the value of
some of these rare and unusual items. So let’s hit the auction blocks
and get started!
Our contestants tonight are Melissa and Annabel, a landlady and her
tenant who once crashed into her garage gate. Fun times, must’ve been.
ROUND 1 – $5,000 – WHAT’S WORTH MORE?
ITEM #1 – 1970 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda convertible, with every available
options, only one of 14 ever made.
ITEM #2 – The Miss USA crown created by Diamond Nexus Labs, featuring
over 1700 flawless synthetic (and eco-friendly) diamonds & emeralds,
which requires over 1800 man hours to make.
After some deliberation, the car gets the vote because of the jewels
being synthetic. Let’s see:
THE CAR: $2,200,000
THE CROWN: $298,900
WOW! No contest here. Put $5,000 in these ladies’ bank.
ROUND 2 – $5,000 – TRUTH BE SOLD
The item in this round costs $12,800. It’s an estimated size 37 shoe.
But why is it so much?
STORY #1: In 1992, Robert Downey, Jr. starred in Chaplin. To duplicate
his famous walk, Downey requested that he use a pair of Chaplin’s actual
big shoes. During production, he lost one of them, and this is the shoe
that’s left.
STORY #2: The shoe once belonged to the world’s tallest man. (For those
that don’t know, his name was Robert Wadlow, who was 8’ 11” at the time
of his death in 1940.)
Unsure why even Downey would lose one of the shoes, they believe Story
#2, and they’re right! ($10,000)
ROUND 3 – $10,000 – ARE YOU BUYING IT?
Which of these three items is worth the most?
ITEM #1: A fully-illustrated, oversized 1970’s copy of Moby Dick. The
book was printed on handmade paper. Only 250 copies were printed for
sale.
ITEM #2: A signed Wayne Gretzky RIGHT-HANDED hockey stick. Trick is,
Gretzky was LEFT-handed.
ITEM #3: An Australian Palm Cockatoo. Yes, we can actually use the line
“Is this rare bird on your hand worth more than the other two in the
bush?”
“Cockatoo me!” Annabel says. Hey, Laugh-In was 40-plus years ago. Let’s
see:
THE BOOK: $23,800
THE HOCKEY STICK: $300
THE BIRD: $18,000
Size matters, ladies. Whale trumps bird every time. ($10,000)
ROUND 4 – $10,000 – PROPERTY LINE
Our line tonight is $100,000. Place these three pieces of real estate
above, below and on the property line:
HOUSE #1 – A flying saucer house in Chattanooga, TN. Built in 1971, this
3-bed, 2-bath is actually built on 6 legs in the shape of a UFO.
HOUSE #2 – A thimble shoal in Chesapeake Bay, VA. It’s a lighthouse that
was sold by the Coast Guard to a vacation family. Cast iron, 38 feet
wide at the deck.
HOUSE #3 – A pair of sunset section combination plots in Santa Barbara,
CA. Yes, we’re talking the cemetery here.
Here’s how they place them:
ABOVE $100K: The flying saucer. ACTUAL VALUE: $120,000
ON $100K: The cemetery. ACTUAL VALUE: $100,000
BELOW $100: The lighthouse. ACTUAL VALUE: $65,000
Nailed it! ($20,000)
ROUND 5 – $20,000 – OUT OF THE CLOSET
We’ve gotta dress our Cedric Zwinky in the more expensive clothing
option each time. Here’s our wardrobe:
SHOES: Pink designer sandal heels worn by Oprah OR an original unworn
pair of Air Jordans from 1985.
DRESS: Chiffon cocktail dress from Paris Hilton OR an original dress
worn by Cindy Brady on The Brady Bunch
HAT: A beaver skin top hat circa 1860 OR a wool fedora worn by Humphrey
Bogart
After much deliberation, Annabel caves to her landlady on the beaver top
hat. Here’s their wardrobe (choice in CAPS) and the results.
SHOES: Oprah ($300) vs. AIR JORDANS ($600)
DRESS: Paris Hilton ($1,000) vs. CINDY BRADY ($2,900)
HAT: BEAVER TOP HAT ($400) vs. Bogart fedora ($800)
Ouch. At this rate, sweetheart, they'll never have Paris. *rimshot*
($20,000)
ROUND 6 – $20,000 – TIME IS MONEY
Which of these items from different time periods is worth the most?
ITEM #1: An Ursus Spelaeus cave bear skeleton from circa 150,000 BCE.
ITEM #2: A French dressoir (which Cedric has tons of fun saying) from
the 1500’s, used to display gold & silver valuables. Only a few of these
exist outside of museums.
ITEM #3: An Austrian music box from the 1870’s used to play classical
opera pieces for the aristocrats.
This time, Melissa gives in after slipping up the last time and they
choose the dressoir over the skeleton. The results:
THE SKELETON: $98,500
THE DRESSOIR: $985,000
THE MUSIC BOX: $48,500
WOW! Another landslide, and now these ladies have the gold. ($40,000)
ROUND 7 – $30,000 – CELEBRITY INFLATION
The items in this round supposedly belonged to famous celebrities. Who
owned what?
THE CELEBS: John F. Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Marilyn Monroe
(If these three were alive in the 90’s, Bill Clinton could probably
offer pointers.)
ITEM #1: Locks of the celeb’s hair ($4,100)
ITEM #2: Black belt with brass buckle ($2,900)
ITEM #3: Designer tape measure (normally $225, sold for $48,900!)
The look of the belt (and the fact that the torso it’s put on is
female), and a story Annabel read about the hair, lead the ladies to
this conclusion:
THE HAIR: JFK (RIGHT)
THE BELT: Jackie (WRONG)
THE TAPE MEASURE: Marilyn (WRONG)
50/50 with the visual clue. Ugh… ($40,000)
So, the ladies stand with $40,000. Now to see if they can notch a zero
onto that.
FINAL ROUND – IT’S WORTH MORE!
The contestants are given 4 items, and so is Cedric. These ladies have
to shuffle the items around so that each of their items is worth more
than whichever of Cedric’s items it’s paired with. Here’s what we’ve
got:
FOR THE LADIES:
#1: Trigger & Bullet, the horse and dog of famed cowboy Roy Rogers, both
mounted in 1965.
#2: A 2011 Thunderbird Storm motorcycle, featuring a liquid-cooled
engine & a 120-MPH top speed.
#3: A quarter slot machine designed for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair.
(Fun fact: A steak cost a quarter back then!)
#4: A 14-piece platinum & gold golf club set from the Honma Golf
Company. Has a 24-karat gold ingot in every grip.
FOR CEDRIC:
#1: A 1915 Harley Davidson model 11F. One of the first bikes to have a
3-speed transmission. Still works.
THEY TRUMP WITH: The slot machine
#2: An exclusive ET movie poster printed for cast & crew only.
THEY TRUMP WITH: The motorcycle
#3: A pair of 17th century wood-carved Italian puti (cherub-like
figures) painted in gold gilt.
THEY TRUMP WITH: The golf clubs (switched from Trigger & Bullet)
#4: A pair of 17th century hand-woven silk & wool French tapestries
depicting scenes of Bacchus and the Roman goddess Diana.
THEY TRUMP WITH: Trigger & Bullet
Now, any miss along the way, and they leave with ¼ of their bank, or
$10,000. Here’s how they play it out:
PAIR #1: Their BIKE vs. Cedric’s MOVIE POSTER
RESULT: $13,900 vs. $2,000 ($40,000)
Now, the decision: Keep the 40, or try to double it. They play on.
PAIR #2: Their TRIGGER & BULLET vs. Cedric’s TAPESTRIES
RESULT: $301,500 vs. $55,000 ($80,000)
Annabel is not sure of anything else at this point, and Melissa agrees.
They quit with $80,000!
BUT... could they have doubled it again? They would have played...
PAIR #3: Their GOLF CLUBS vs. Cedric’s PUTI
RESULT: $66,000 vs. $9,500
FORE... TIMES!!! And what about the last pair? Could they have maxed out
and won the full 10x jackpot of $400,000?
PAIR #4: Their SLOT MACHINE vs. Cedric’s 1915 HARLEY
RESULT: $3,400 vs. $72,000
No way. So there was more in it, but hey, $80,000 will cover rent issues
for a while for these ladies. At least one would hope. A good night for
them, and so for us. So long and... Stay Way Past Cool!
