"Our ultimate competition is with ourselves. That is what my uncle told me when I would visit him as a young boy... My uncle, the man the world knows as Kaga the Chairman, has decided that, although America is a young country, we now possess the proper palate to host our own Iron Chef competition, an American celebration of the world's high art of cuisine."

Military Grill Battle Ahi
June 2

The Challenge: Today, the Chairman is back in his native Hawaii, where he has sent three of his charges to team up with three of the United States Armed Forces' best grill masters in a battle unlike any other. Honorary Iron Chef Cat Cora returns to the field of battle to take on her culinary cohorts Mike Symon and Masaharu Morimoto in the most patriotic battle to date. The mission: with ample provisions and fiery apparatuses, you are to create five stunning grilled creations unlike anything ever tasted.

The chefs meet their partners at Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Prepare for battle.

The Theme Ingredient: ahi tuna

The Rules: Each chef must create a five-course dinner, with each course utilizing the theme ingredient, within 60 minutes. And for this battle only, there must be a grilled element in each dish. The judges will score the dishes on a 20-point scale: 10 points taste, 5 points plating and presentation, 5 points creativity and use of theme ingredient. The chef that best articulates the theme through their dishes wins.

The battle clock is set at 60 minutes, which will start when the Chairman, with full heart and empty stomach, utters the words of his dear uncle.... "Allez cuisine!"

And Battle Thunnus obesus is ON! Ahi is one of the largest tuna species in the world at 80 pounds. It's also known as "big eye tuna" because of its... well, big eyes. It is considered sustainable, harvested by long line.

Each team of chefs is given ONE fish.

Tonight's Judges...
- Actor Daniel Dae Kim ("Hawaii Five-0")
- TV host Sunny Anderson ("Cooking for Real")
- Food writer Simon Majumdar ("The Next Iron Chef")

A rare three-way battle between chefs highlighted the talents of the men and women who work day and night to keep us free. In this battle, there are no losers, but at the end of the day, there can only be one winner.... Whose military cuisine reigns supreme: the Army, the Navy, or the Marines?

The verdict...

CORA/DOWNEY MORIMOTO/CASTILLO SYMON/ALVARADO
Taste 24 25 26
Plating 12 13 12
Originality 12 13 15

... 53-51-48 in favor of Iron Chef Michael Symon & Chef Oscar Alvarado. A perfect score in the originality category is where the US Army earns its winning edge. And special thanks to all three chefs for what they do in and out of the kitchen. You are a credit to your respective branches, but when it comes to putting it on the plate... It's Army Strong all the way.

Until next battle, we bid you good eating.
