Round
of 10: Billy Joel
March 21
The most
eventful week in American Idol history ended with TWO
eliminations. Jermaine Jones was eliminated by virtue of
his contestant invalidation, and Shannon Magrane was
kicked out on the back of the vote. Now 10 remain in the
hunt, and the playbook tonight? The songs of Billy Joel.
Helping them with their
image and style is noted fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger. Helping them
with their vocals is noted hip-hop raconteur Sean "Diddy" Combs. How
that has to do with Billy Joel... who knows, but let's go to the set
list...
1. Deandre Brackensick - Only
the Good Die Young
OOOH, Houston we have a
problem. Deandre is singing this song "happy and peppy" while this song
should be "angry and almost begging". That absolutely sucked and
this clash of styles puts him in TROUBLE.
2. Erika Van Pelt - New York State of
Mind
I didn't like this either. She was singing this like Whitney Houston
while it should have been sung more straight up. All these runs were
tricks, and didn't enhance the song. TROUBLE.
3. Joshua Ledet - She's Got a Way
Great song choice here. This is a more personal song that's fits
Joshua's style. I liked the Gospel twinge to this version. SAFE. I
didn't see what the judges saw here.
4. Skylar Laine - Shameless
Smart smart choice. Staying in her wheel house and using the Garth
Brooks version will get her into next week without a problem. Her
performance wasn't the best I have seen her, but it's the best this week
so far. SAFE.
5. Elise Testone - Vienna
LOVED this. Simplistic performance. Straight up Rock and Roll, although
I didn't like the run at the end. If she kept it simple throughout, it
would have been perfect. SAFE though.
6. Phillip Phillips - Movin' Out
(Anthony's Song)
This performance was a middle finger to everyone involved. And while I
love him, this performance DID not help him at all. He needs to do
something different and change it up. Or else we may have someone else
besides him moving up and him moving out. SAFE.
7. Hollie Cavanaugh - Honesty
Very very good performance....this was in the exact same vein as last
week. And I have zero problem with that. SAFE. The judges were WAY WRONG
on this.
8. Heejun Han - My Life
WHAT? THE? HELL? is this? I didn't understand a word of this performance
and this is a SANJAYA like crash and burn. TROUBLE.
9. Jessica Sanchez - Everybody Has A
Dream
I had to look this one up, as it is a non-single from "The Stranger".
While this performance was great, Simon Cowell would have called this
"indulgent". No problems however at all. SAFE.
10. Colton Dixon - Piano Man
An Alt rock version of this? Interesting. Did I like it? Not really. But
was this the worst thing I heard tonight. Not by a long shot. SAFE.
TROUBLE - Heejun, Deandre, Erika
Bottom Two - Deandre, Heejun
Out - Deandre.
