In the world's ultimate talent search - where the eyes of a nation are upon the best undiscovered singers in the country, where the audience has the power to make or break you, and where a million-dollar recording contract is on the line, there is only one rule: If you can sing it, bring it.

Round of 12: The Year They Were Born
March 17

Chico: Last night on Idol, we went back in time to the year of our birth... Some people did those years justice... Others wish they could go back in time and correct their mistake. Thoughts on Birthyear Night?
Don: It was interesting. I thought the first few performances weren't as good as I had hoped, but things got better eventually.
Chico: Oh yeah, things got better... Don Harpwood with Chico Alexander this week, by the way. Now before we get an urge to go back to 1980, let's play this week's round of....

Don: Whoo!
Chico: Starting with...

NAIMA ADEDAPO - "What's Love Got To Do With It" (Tina Turner)

Don: Wasn't good in my opinion. I think she's in trouble.
Chico: No it wasn't good. Not a really good start, but she's going to get Ashthon's vote. So she's SAFE.
Block: TROUBLE.
Gordon: SAFE
GP: SAFE

PAUL McDONALD - "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" (Elton John)

Don: A little better than Naima, but once again, I'm thinking trouble.
Chico: Better than Naima, but he was playing to his base, so he's SAFE.
Block: TROUBLE
Gordon: SAFE
GP: TROUBLE

THIA MEGIA - "Colors of the Wind" (Vanessa Williams)

Chico: Better than Naima & Paul, but she's falling into some familiar traps... SAFE... but just.
Don: Hmm. This was a tough call for me. I'm thinking OUT, but I could be wrong, given she's been on AGT and may have a fanbase carrying over from there.
Block: SAFE
Gordon: SAFE
GP: SAFE.

JAMES DURBIN - "I'll Be There For You" (Bon Jovi)

Don: I liked it. Could've been better, but I think he'll be safe.
Chico: Same here.
Block: SAFE
Gordon: SAFE
GP: SAFE

HALEY REINHART - "I'm Your Baby Tonight" (Whitney Houston)

Chico: Say goodnight, Gracie. OUT.
Don: I'm thinking safe, but that's only if her fanbase bails her out, knowing what happened with her last week.
Chico: What fanbase.
Don: ... Good question.
Gordon: OUT
Block: OUT
GP: OUT

STEFANO LANGONE - "If You Don't Know Me By Now" (Simply Red)

Don: This one was nice. Safe.
Chico: Another solid performance. SAFE.
GP: SAFE
Block: SAFE
Gordon: SAFE

PIA TOSCANO - "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" (Whitney Houston)

Don: Safe.
Chico: Again, I'm not a fan of the arrangement, but the best of the night. SAFE.
Gordon: SAFE
Block: SAFE
GP: SAFE

SCOTTY McCREERY - "CAn I Trust You With My Heart" (Travis Tritt)

Chico: Classic Scotty. SAFE.
Block: SAFE
Don: He's got the country vote by far. SAFE.
GP: SAFE
Gordon: SAFE

KAREN RODRIGUEZ - "Love Will Lead You Back" (Taylor Dayne)

Chico: Starting to become "schticky". TROUBLE.
Don: Could've been better, but I'm thinking safe. But just.
JASON: SAFE
Gordon: TROUBLE
GP: TROUBLE.

CASEY ABRAMS - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (Nirvana).

Chico: Why. TROUBLE.
Block: TROUBLE
Don: Oh, Casey. I wish he hadn't picked a Nirvana song after that. But somehow, I'm thinking safe.
Gordon: TROUBLE
GP: SAFE

Chico: More picks at the break, but right now... *points to Don*
Don: THIS... is American Idol!
Chico: Now to the show. America has spoken. And while the Black Eyed Peas and Lee DeWyze prepare to take the stage, we count up the number of votes that Ryan isn't giving right now. First up, the Top 12 get our motor running with "Born to Be Wild" (Steppenwolf). How a propos. And not synched, because the mic fails.... mashed up with "Born This Way" (Lady Gaga). That mashup... GENIUS.
Don: That actually sounds cool.
Chico: ... I'll take it. Okay. Back to picks...

LAUREN ALAINA - "I'm the Only One" (Melissa Etheridge)

Don: Safe.
Chico: Someone got their footing back. SAFE.
Gordon: SAFE
Block: SAFE
GP: SAFE
Chico: And finally...

JACOB LUSK - "Alone" (Heart)

Chico: All together now..
Everyone: SAFE.
Chico: Thank you. So to recap...

Block: Naima, Paul, and HALEY out.
GP: Paul, Karen, and HALEY out.
Don: My picks: Naima, Paul, THIA.
Gordon: Casey, Karen, and HALEY out.
Chico: Casey, Karen, and HALEY out.
Chico: And Ryan's really pushing the Red Cross Japan relief effort... You can donate $10 by texting REDCROSS to 90999. AND... all of the proceeds from last night's iTunes sales will go to said relief. And of course our thoughts go out to those affected.
Don: Yep.
Chico: right now, though... Ford Music Video time... This week, it's "Val Kilmer". Seriously, the song's called "Val Kilmer"?
Don: Never heard of it.
Chico: Oh well... Tenth Anniversary CD just came out... and everyone in Television City in Hollywood... is getting one. Now comes... the Hidden Talent reel... They bleeped "Shih-tzu"? Seriously?
Don: That's kinda odd...
Chico: Okay... SERIOUS LIGHTS! .... and Kieran's Irish. Happy St. Patrick's Day indeed... NOW... SERIOUS LIGHTS! SERIOUS MUSIC! First down, Casey, Lauren, and Jacob. Jacob got raves... the key to overcoming pitch problems.... well, it's knowing where the pitch is. Duh, winning. Jacob... SAFE! One down, 11 to go. Lauren was sick... but back in form. She's ALSO SAFE! And Casey... with "Smells Like Teen Spirit"... and the goop that makes things great... HE'S safe. Heh... Goop. Haley and Paul are next.
Don: I'm not sure if I really want to know what's in that goop...
Chico: Haley left Randy confused. Haley left US confused too... Paul McDonald... stayed true to himself and was a "cool dude in a loose mood". In the bottom 3 tonight.... HALEY. Meanwhile, let's go to the stage with his new single.... the reigning American Idol.... LEE DeWYZE! The song is called "Beautiful Like You". Genericky folky poppy rock... and people wonder why they haven't really embraced the winner of season 9.
Don: Indeed. This isn't exactly as interesting as I expected.
Chico: His advice: "Remember why you tried out in the first place". More results after the break. And if you're watching "Wipeout"... Spring Wipeout is EXACTLY LIKE WINTER WIPEOUT. Back to the results... Serious lights... serious music... Scotty, Pia, and James... down front and center, maggots. Scotty pushes the limits and went up an octave. And he's a playa. And he lives to play another day. Pia is in it to win it... SAFE! James was "tasteful". And he and Steven have a date for the finale... but will he make it that far? SAFE! That leaves Thia, Stefano, and Naima. Thia... stays on the couches for now. Stefano was the best (up to that point). Naima had a lot of energy and had opened up a can of whooooooopdeedoo. One of them is safe.
Chico: NAIMA... joins Haley. Stefano is SAFE.
Don: That doesn't surprise me.
Chico: D'oh! Forgot about Karen. Easy to do, isn't it? Karen and Thia take the stage... Steven likes it when Karen breaks into her "ethnic what-it-is-ness" And Thia put Randy to sleep. You know, for someone who isn't "just a ballad singer", she sure sings a lot of ballads. Just sayin'. And Thia... IS SAFE. So the bottom three...

Haley, Naima, and Karen.

Chico: Surprised?
Don: Not too much, honestly.
Chico: Neither am I. =p we'll see who gets the shaft in a moment, but first... how about a bonus performance. With "Just Can't Get Enough"... here are THE BLACK EYED PEAS! ... that was fun.
Don: Yep.
Chico: Now for something a little less fun. Serious light... serious music... Back to safety... goes... NAIMA. That leaves Haley and Karen. One of them is in danger of leaving tonight... That one... is... KAREN. Shocking, but at the same time not. It's time for Karen Rodriguez to SING FOR HER LIFE.... She'll be using "Hero" And seriously... I think she's run her course. She's revealed herself to be a one-trick pony, and that's going to nail her.
Don: I don't think this will warrant a save.
Chico: Newp. Bringing up the scoreboard... ... no that's not going to help either, Karen.

Gordon: 7
GP: 7
Jason: 6
Chico: 5
Don: 3

Chico: Randy with the verdict... It was not unanimous... And they will NOT use the save tonight. So Karen gets the David Cook montage, and we're going to have more on this this week on WLTI. Thanks for hanging out. Remember to support local & independent music. REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10. Say goodnight, Don.
Don: Goodnight, Don.
Chico: Goodnight, everyone, we'll see you next week! :-)
