The Last Supper
May 14
Last time, Paula and Danny were sent to
Atlantic City to compete in their final challenge. Danny, as winner, got
to choose who will cook in his restaurant. Danny's team comprised of
Ben, Giovanni, and Carol. Paula goes with Andrea, LA, and Lacey. At the
end of the hour, Florida will claim one of its own as champion, but will
it be the redneck prodigy or the saucy Brazilian?
The brigades are brought up to speed
while construction continues. Carol thinks that it sucks to be on
Danny's team because she wants a woman to win. Ben's excited to get to
work, while Giovanni has a chip on his shoulder. Lacey... well, what can
be said about her that hasn't been said already? Andrea says that if she
gives any negativity on her... wrath's a-comin'.
Eight hours to opening, and the kitchens
begin prep. Lacey is told to start with the banana creme brulee... and
she can't even do that. She has to start over, while both teams have to
win the approval of Ramsay before anything can be served. Ben says that
Danny's going to get him at full force tonight. Andrea says that she
will not let Paula down.
The menus...
PAULA
- Homemade Pasta with Eggplant Caviar
- Halibut with Pearl Onions and Pancetta
- Banana Creme Brulee
DANNY
- Arugula Salad with Crispy Duck Breast
- Pan Seared Filet with Baked Potato
- Poached Pear with Mascarpone Mousse
Both menus are very similar and very
appealing. So even before cooking starts, it's a statistical dead heat.
Paula and Danny take Ramsay on a tour of
their restaurant. Paula's Sunergy is comforting and beautiful. Danny's
Velvet Hammer is bold and rich in color. Albeit rustic.
Final words of encouragement. There's no
rehearsal. There's no second chance. Ramsay is proud of both of them,
but in the end, there can only be one.
So for the last time this season... "Jean
Philippe... Open Hell's Kitchen!"
The rules are different for tonight's
service, as each kitchen will serve 13 tables of 50 diners. Customer
reviews along with Ramsay's observations will determine who wins their
own restaurant at Borgata and $250,000.
Danny starts his team very vocal and very
vibrant. Paula's kitchen... less so. She has to start the brigade
talking to each other and not burning... literally.
Danny's trying to get out his first
appetizer, as Carol starts getting backed up. Ramsay tells both chefs
that they need to get a grip on their standards. Forty-five minutes into
service, both kitchens start serving appetizers. Paula's waiting for
Andrea to start serving her first entree. This is the first time she's
ever cooked halibut... and it shows. Danny's anxious to get his entrees
out as well. We're still waiting on potato... and we get it. Paula's
finally found her voice, but she's getting screwed on halibut. Danny's
also getting screwed on overseasoned sauce. The way he figures... he's
only in this for himself. He could care less who wins.
Paula's trying to push out entrees... but
Lacey's cooking duplicate orders. She thinks that the menus are too
complicated. As the night progresses, she just shuts down. Danny's team,
though, is working together. This is do or die for him. Two hours into
service, Paula finally finds her rhythm. It turns into a race to the
finish. Who'll be the first to 50?
It's going to be ... DANNY! It doesn't
faze Paula one ounce that Danny finished first. She's convinced that
she'll finish best. It's going to come down to the customer on this.
Ramsay rallies the troops together for
the best two services in Hell's Kitchen yet. Unfortunately, only one
chef will win.
But the winner will not be revealed in
the kitchen. Instead, Ramsay says only that the winner... lives in
Florida.
Both brigades are proud of their chefs.
Ben and Andrea say that their respective chefs have it in the bag, while
the others say it's a toss-up. Paula says that Danny is the best of the
best, but she's done this since she was 10. Danny calls himself a
culinary prodigy. Both chefs had their moments and their setbacks. This
is going to be a tough decision.
But a decision has been made. Paula has
excelled. Danny has grown and matured throughout. Whatever happens, both
chefs have extraordinary careers in front of them.
In front of Danny and Paula, the familiar
two doors. The winner's door will open. On Ramsay's count... "One...
two... THREE!"
A door opens... and the winner of "Hell's
Kitchen" season 5 is... DANNY VELTRI! And no one could have been more
jubilant than he.
The patrons, chefs, and competition
salute their new champion with a champagne toast and a new tradition...
the Hell's Kitchen Wall of Fame with photos of Ramsay and past winners
Michael Wray (season 1), Heather West (season 2), Rock Harper (season
3), and Christina Machamer (season 4). Danny is allowed to post his
photo alongside the five.
"Danny won Hell's Kitchen because in a
very short period of time, he grew more than any other chef I've ever
seen. He now has the talent, the maturity, to become a great head chef.
Borgata Resort should consider themselves lucky. I know I would."
Thanks for reading, and we'll see you
back in July for season 6 in Hell. Until then, do me a favor.... (^_^)
