Songs That Inspire
May 31
A shakeup in the lineup leads John Legend
to inherit the top spot when he takes his chances on a ringer, former
"American Idol" contestant Meleana Brown alongside previous #1 holder J
Rome. Meanwhile, Jason Farol and Olivia Chisholm will have serious work
to do to avoid being in the bottom again, which is important because
tonight SOMEONE is going home.
First of all, Jennifer and John have the
music in them with "I've Got The Music In Me". Here's how things ended
LAST WEEK...
CHART AFTER WEEK TWO
1) MELEANA BROWN (John)
1) J ROME (Jennifer)
3) BRIDGET CARRINGTON (John)
4) JOHN GLOSSON (Jennifer)
5) JORDAN MEREDITH (Kelly)
6) ALEXIS FOSTER (Robin)
7) JASON FAROL (Kelly)
8) OLIVIA CHISHOLM (Robin)
Now the superstars that didn't perform
will enter a secret score with 50 points for performance and 50 for
presentation. After each amateur performs, we'll total the scores and
reveal the standing.
Alexis Foster will try to avoid the
bottom spot with "Killing Me Softly with His Song" by Roberta Flack,
famously remade by the Fugees. Seems like they went with the Fugees
version. Because it sounds exactly the same. At least they mesh
together. Not that that counts for anything. And neither does a #1
finish when you're the only one who's sung.
An interesting song choice for John
Glosson as he takes the stage with Jennifer. John chose... "How Great
Thou Art", a traditional spiritual, and a song that John holds in high
regard because today he found out that his mother was pregnant with him
one day before he lost what would've been his 8-year-old brother. In a
duet, you have to go to a place emotionally. The decision to go a
cappella to start... is a POWERFUL one. And the vocal is also a powerful
one. He lands.... in the top spot!
Kelly sees a lot of herself in her
partner Jordan Meredith. She says she gets nervous, but how will she
overcome that? By singing ANOTHER talent show star's song, Miranda
Lambert's "Mama's Broken Heart". First of all, namedropping Robin...
awesome. Good song sung by two chicks who... have just absolutely lost
it. Looks like Jordan may finally have found her place in the
competition. In this case, though... it's SECOND.
Meleana Brown came into this competition
JUST LAST WEEK, and JUST LAST WEEK, she landed in the top spot. So
either she's going to peak too early, or she's going to go the distance.
Tonight's song will tell the tale, it's "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia
Keys (less famously remade by Maroon 5). They could've taken the easy
way out and just go with the Alicia & Usher duet mix, but they
challenged each other on stage. Just wish that they could've done a
little more. She ends up in... #3. Not bad, but still in danger.
We're at the halfway mark, as Robin takes
the stage with Olivia Chisholm singing "Crazy in Love" by Ms. Knowles &
Mr. Carter. Beyonce & Jay-Z. Apparently going for the knockout punch. Oh
Young Thicke... you think you're Jigga. The good news... Olivia is
driving the car. The bad news.... Olivia is driving the car into the
garage with the door still down. She lands in fifth... in danger.
Unlike the first two weeks, the two
singers in the bottom will sing with no partners, no backup, and
everything on the line. One of them will get another chance. The other
is going to drop.
Jennifer goes one more round with J Rome,
who's emerging as a favorite to win. He's dedicating "How Am I Supposed
To Live Without You" to his grandfather, who passed on not too long ago.
Again, taking a duet to a powerful deep place is going to score you
performance points, and Jennifer seems to have picked the ideal partners
for handling such tasks. Whatever happens on the charts, J Rome is the
man to beat. On the charts, it's.... #1 and SAFE!
Jason Farol is still being held back by
his own ability. He's letting fears get the better of him, and that's
going to be his downfall. Unless... meet Jason's father! That's
inspiring in and of itself, but will it translate into a winning
performance of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" (remade by Jeff Buckley)?
This was Jason's moment from start to finish. His best, but when you've
had his two openers, it's not saying much. He's come a ways, but he's
still got a ways to go. A poor finish lands him at... #6.
Closing out the show is Bridget
Carrington, who's slowly coming into her own as well. But will she keep
pace with John on "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Smokey Robinson
& the Miracles. It's Bridget's father's favorite. She's basically going
out there and giving it her all. .... and John's by himself on stage.
Until Bridget comes out with a surprise... the Gladys Knight version.
Very saucy, very sexy, but the chemistry is lacking in parts. She ends
up... here.
CHART AFTER WEEK THREE
1) J ROME (Jennifer) - FLAT
2) JOHN GLOSSON (Jennifer) +2
3) JORDAN MEREDITH (Kelly) +2
4) BRIDGET CARRINGTON (John) -1
5) MELEANA BROWN (John) -1
6) OLIVIA CHISHOLM (Robin) +2
---- DANGER ZONE ----
7) JASON FAROL (Kelly) - FLAT

Now it's down to a one-song Solo
Showdown.
SOLO SHOWDOWN #1
Jason: "Me and Mrs. Jones" - Billy Paul
Alexis: "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" - Aretha Franklin
The judges' final choice is locked. It
cannot be changed... and the first amateur eliminated from the
competition...
.... is ALEXIS.
