CELEBRITY BLACKJACK

EPISODE 3

NOTES FROM THE AUTHOR

What follows is a televised-hand-by-televised-hand account.  Obviously, since it's only a one-hour show, most hands are not televised so you're going to see a lot of jumping of the dealer button.

So what do you get when you take celebrities away from the limelight, put $100,000 in chips in front of them and force them to play 21 hands of blackjack for charity?  Why, you get CELEBRITY BLACKJACK!

Much like World Series of Blackjack, Celebrity Blackjack will be contested in five-player single-table matches with the winners getting $25,000 and advancing to the Final Table for a crack at the $100,000 first prize, all for their charities.

For rules on how blackjack is played, see the small tutorial in the first recap of the series.  But know that this is a blackjack tournament, meaning every player starts with $100,000 in chips and must bet between $1000 and $25,000 on each hand to start.  After 21 hands, the one with the most money wins $25,000 and a seat at the $100,000 Final Table. There is a "Dealer Button" which goes around the table, but it signifies who BETS and PLAYS first, not who the dealer starts dealing cards to first.  This is significant, though, since betting is a HUGE part of tournament blackjack.

And, remember, for this special tournament, four JOKERS have been added to the six decks they play with.  A Joker can be substituted for any card on the table still in play.

Lets meet the five celebs competing tonight (and their charities):

Jamie Kennedy
(Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA)
Plays "Creepy Guy" in "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" and the lead in "Malibu's Most Wanted"

Melissa Joan Hart
(Friends of the Family)
Played the lead on ABC's Sabrina the Teeange Witch...and BOTH aunts in the Disney animated series

Hal Sparks
(Much Love Animal Rescue)
Michael Charles Novotny-Bruckner on Showtime's "Queer As Folk"; also bit parts in Spider-Man 2 and Dude, Where's My Car?

Dean Cain
(Malibu Foundation for Youth and Families)
Best know as Clark Kent in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman; will be in new NBC drama Clubhouse this fall

Eddie Griffin
(Clarence E. McClendon Ministries)
Comic actor; was lead in "Undercover Brother"; also in "Scary Movie 3" and "My Baby's Daddy"

We have your hosts Matt Vasgersian and Alex Boorstein calling the action. Our dealer tonight is "Bad Boy of Blackjack", "Hollywood" Dave Stann...so let's get it on!  Jamie will always be "first base", where the dealer starts dealing the cards.  But the order shown, left to right, will be the betting and playing order starting with the "button".

According to statistics, the Dealer only busts about 35% of the time with a 2 showing. Still, basic strategy says to stand on any hard hand (without an Ace) 13 or higher when the dealer has a low card (2 through 6). HERE, Eddie should've doubled-down on his soft hand; that's basic strategy as well.

Hal CAN split his hand if he wants (as long as the cards are of the same VALUE, you can split them)...but it's not advisable.
DEALER: A
When a Dealer shows an Ace, he offers "insurance" against a Dealer Blackjack, at a cost of half the given bet. He also offers anyone WITH a Blackjack (like Dean) "even money" (2-to-1 instead of 3-to-2) whether the Dealer has it or not.
No Insurance EVEN MONEY No Insurance No Insurance No Insurance
In cash games, insurance is a "sucker bet", so no one takes it. Dean DOES take "even money" though. Now the Dealer checks the down card. If it's a 10-point card, he shows the Blackjack and everyone but Dean loses. He doesn't, though, so the hand continues.

Under normal circumstances, you should ALWAYS double-down on 11, since the chances of getting a 21 are very good. However, it's not always a good idea with an Ace showing, even if the Dealer DOESN'T have Blackjack. Besides, Eddie lost three doubles so far. Had he doubled-down, chances are he would have lost anyway.
