PIT STOP #11
BEACH BELOW MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL
0854 LOCAL TIME

There are WAY worse places to have a PIT STOP than in Rio (including the ANIMATED version of it, I think). And, with the sun low and rising, Gary & Mallory rip open the final Leg-starting clue:

ROUTE INFO

FLY TO YOUR FINAL DESTINATION CITY: MIAMI, FLORIDA!

Fly over 4000 miles to Miami, Florida, USA, your final destination city.. When you land, head for the Rickenbacker Marina on Virginia Key and go to the boat dry dock to find your next clue.

You have $365 for this Leg of the Race.

They could be the first parent/child team to win the Race and they feel that bit of pressure, hoping that flights from a hot spot in summer to a hot spot in winter is booked! The other two teams' departure times (all local):
Kisha & Jen: 0905
"Flight Time" & "Big Easy": 0929

Kisha & Jen had a mother who worked hard to help her family make ends meet...and they are NOT about to disappoint her by making dumb decisions. Herb & Nate are happy to be in the Final Three and are going to push it in this final Leg. After all, these ain't the Washington Generals they're playing against!

GALEĆO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
RIO DE JANEIRO
, BRAZIL

The three teams get their tickets at the American Airlines counter, all three on the same flight arriving at the M-I-A. Team Trotters considers just leaving their bags at the airport to cut down on time. For the final time, the Great Equalizer makes it an even Race as six Americans fly to...

MIAMI, FLORIDA, USA

At the home of Gloria Estefan, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and (as of last July) LeBron James, the flight touches down. The three teams sprint downstairs to the cabs. Team Trotters gets out first, Team Cardinal Sisters right behind...and Team KY/Dad seem to get dissed as they leave well behind. the ladies' cab passes the b-ballers' en route and the father/daughter just have faith and a feeling that they can win...but their driver gives them a feeling that they're lost...which they are. DOH!

RICKBACKER MARINA
MIAMI, FLORIDA, USA

The two African-American teams arrive at the marina, tell their cabbies to wait and run into the dry dock area where they arrive at:

ROADBLOCK

WHO'S CONFIDENT ABOUT HANDLING A BOAT?

Boating is a way of life in Miami. You're about to learn the perils of working in a dry dock. One team member must learn how to operate a heavy-load forklift and then transport a boat from the wet dock to the dry dock without dropping it. Once successful, the forklift operator will hand you your next clue. If you drop the boat, even at the dry dock station, you must return to the wet dock for another boat.

"Flight Time" and Kisha decide to try to NOT rock the boats. They each choose a forklift and and get to learning. Herb did some forklifting at Walmart before...but nothing quite THIS big. Kisha seems to be doing fine with it and heads for the wet dock with Herb right behind. The operators give them good instructions as they lower their forks, close them beneath their boats and lift them up and back. Carefully, they work their way back to the dry dock, lift up the forks and bring them over the boards that represent the docking station. Slowly...easily...they inch the boats down...

...and Herb gets the thumbs-up first! He gets the clue and sprints to Nate to read it:

ROUTE INFO

TIME TO HEAD UNDER THE SEA!

Travel to Key Largo and locate Jules' Undersea Lodge. On the dock by the Lodge, you'll find your next clue.

Team Trotters bolt...and Kisha gets her boat in place and gets the nod from her operator. They leave the ROADBLOCK in second, minutes behind the leaders.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand, Team KY/Dad is STILL lost! And Mallory is VERY upset! She even shouts out to other cars to get directions. At first it's to no avail, but a homeowner gets them on the right track. They make the Marina and Gary decides to move the boat. Mallory is trying to remain positive about all this, hoping one of the other two teams has similar bad circumstances as her dad lifts the boat carefully.

JULES' UNDERSEA LODGE
KEY LARGO, FLORIDA, USA

At the only underwater hotel in the U.S., Herb & Nate give the cabbie some money and tell him to fuel up and come back. As they sprint into the lodge grounds, Kisha & Jen arrive, noticing the other taxi. Team Trotters then run into another:

ROADBLOCK

YOU'RE GOING ON A TREASURE HUNT!

Since the end of World War II, Florida has been well known for its underwater shows which continue even to this day. One team member (which should be the one with five ROADBLOCKs done instead of six), must don a personal submarine called a "BOBdiver" and swim among the mermaids and amid dozens of floating treasure chests and find one chest with your next clue.

Well, it's obviously going to be "Big Easy" Nate and Jen who are going under; they're the only ones on the teams who still have one ROADBLOCK to do. Jen...is freaking, remembering her aquaphobic panic attack from her last Race. But down into the water and up into the BOBdivers go Nate and Jen. As they sank, the mermaids (which, as you may have guessed, are women in cloth mermaid tails breathing from long hoses) came out and distracted them. [PERSONAL NOTE: As a mer-phile and aquaphile, this is a ROADBLOCK dream come true for me!]

Back at the docks, Gary carefully maneuvers the boat off the forklift and onto the dry dock station (damn...I was hoping for a crash) and gets the clue, allowing him and Mallory to return to their clueless driver and depart for Key Largo in last. According to Mallory, they have about 25 minutes to make up. But, even if they don't, Mallory's glad to have gone through this again with her father.

No clue if it IS better down where it's wetter, but Nate and Jen seem to be having a good time, even though they look through the chests while swimming amid the mermaids (including a band). Nate is the first to find a clue, causing Jen to curse in bubbles. He surfaces and runs to Herb with the clue. And...it's a puzzler, to say the least:

ROUTE INFO

A RIDDLE FOR YOU:

Off the coast of Big Pine Key,
There is a camp that's by the sea.
To find the mile marker near where you should be,
Please subtract four from thirty-three.

As Team Trotters work out that they need to get to the Seacamp on Big Pine Key near Mile Marker 29, Jen swims by the band (blocked by a mermaid temporarily) and finds a clue. She and Kisha read the clue. There's a problem for Herb & Nate, though; their cab isn't there yet. Either the cabbie didn't understand the "fuel-up-and-return" deal...or the nearest gas station's a fair way away. Either way, Team Cardinal Sisters run past them and back into the lead. Herb says it best: "This is bad!" They run and run to find their cab and, as Kisha & Jen get in THEIR cab, they FIND it. But they need directions to Big Pine Key. Tean Cardinal Sisters' cabbie just drives, as there's only ONE distiguishable road along the Florida Keys with mile markers on them: U.S. Highway 1 (the Overseas Highway).

As the two teams race, the third arrives at the Undersea Lodge and Mallory, being the one with five ROADBLOCKs under her belt, gets to swim with the half-fishes.

SEACAMP - MILE MARKER 29
BIG PINE KEY, FLORIDA, USA

The sisters find the clue box and again ask the cabbie to hold tight. They run to get the clue...and are scratching their heads:

ROUTE INFO

WALK TO HORSESHOE ISLAND!

Walk across the ocean to Horseshoe Island. If you can find the tallest tree there, you'll find your next clue.

Well,...unless your the Son of God, walking on water is NOT easy. Fortunately, they learn that the water IS shallow around that part of the Keys...and that they MIGHT get their pants wet but walking to the island is an easy trek. As they start to walk, Team Trotters arrive and start THEIR water-walk.

HORSESHOE ISLAND
OFF COAST OF BIG PINE KEY, FLORIDA, USA

The water part of their journey over, Kisha & Jen now look amid the island for the "tallest tree". It takes them a minute or so (and some fretting as Herb & Nate appear to be half-way across), but they find the clue:

ROUTE INFO

TIME FOR YOU TO PICK UP SPEED!

Walk back to the Seacamp and go to the nearby marina. There you will take a thrilling high-speed boat ride to Marathon Marina in Marathon, Florida. Upon arrival, travel on foot to the Galway Bay Mobile Home Park and find your next clue.

The two teams pass each other...but from opposite sides of a brush so Team Trotters doesn't see Team Cardinal Sisters heading back to the mainland. Still, it doesn't take long for Herb & Nate to find their next clue and start the long walk back.

Back under da sea, Mallory is still searching for that final clue to Seacamp. The mermaids aren't helping matters much, unable to give her any advice. But, at last, she finds the clue and surfaces with the mermaid sending her off with a bubbly kiss. And of course, once towelled off, she and Gary find out that the cabbie has clue zero as to where Big Pine Key is. He has an idea about Mile Marker 29, though, so off they go.

Kisha & Jen get their bags from the cab, pay off the cabbie and get on board a boat with FOUR engines on its aft. As Team Trotters reach the shore, the girls' boat leaves the dock and goes full throttle. And that's when they learn they WILL get wet on this ride! A few minutes behind are the men, also going fast in open water.

Some time after those teams leave, Team KY/Dad arrives and start their walk. There still a fair bit behind, but they find the clue and walk back, still hoping time can be made up.

MARATHON, FLORIDA, USA

On the city stretched across seven of the Florida Keys which has only about 10,000 people, Kisha & Jen disembark (Jen a bit rattled from the ride). The mobile home park isn't too far from the dock, so they get there in no time. But one more task awaits before they reach the end of this Race:

ROUTE INFO

SET UP YOUR TRAILER-HOOD!

Choose a smaller trailer, pull it down a marked path to a vacant trailer lot nearby and plug it into the local utility wire. Once the trailer is in place, use the brochure included as a reference and create the ultimate trailer-hood in your lot using the items inside the trailer. When it has been set up EXACTLY as the brochure picture looks, the judge ("Miss Rose") will give you your next clue.

Team Cardinal Sisters choose the D-10 lot and haul their trailer away...JUST as Herb & Nate arrive. THEY choose the C-8 lot for their slice of Florida Key lime heaven. The locals watch with mild amusement as the two teams park their trailers and hook up their utilities.

Meanwhile, Gary & Mallory are keeping their heads covered with towels as their boat slams across the waves. But, again, even if their in last, they're happy to be together on this last Leg.

Well, now that they're plugged in, it's time to build the trailer-hood. Herb & Nate were having an easy go with setting everything up. But suddenly, as Nate says, "Hurricane Andrew hit". No, not the devastating storm from 1992 that leveled most of rural south Florida (C-Note: I remember that well... a fridge was on our roof)...but it WAS a pretty big gust of wind that blew the door canopy this way and that as they tried to set it up. (Hey, you live by the ocean, you HAVE to expect gusts like that!) Kisha & Jen likewise have issues with the winds. Now the locals watch with MUCH amusement.

As they chase canopies and plastic pools, Team KY/Dad arrive in Marathon. They see the two empty trailer spots and hope some issue has come up with the leaders. They grab their trailer and work to getting it to D-12.

"Miss Rose" walks by to watch Team Trotters set up shop. They promise to have it done in about 10 minutes, making it look as good as "Rose"'s boufant hairstyle. So she moves on to Team Cardinal Sisters' site. They ask her for a ruling...but she turns them down (apparently missing the dishes and condiments on the small table). She goes back to Herb & Nate's...but she also turns THEM down (the canopy lights, it seems).

And, wouldn'tcha know it, this is when Gary & Mallory show up! It's a three-way Race again! As things get intense, Kisha & Jen ask again of "Miss Rose"...and, again, they're turned down. THAT's when they realize something's missing from the table. Herb & Nate continue to fight the wind keeping their fence up and Gary & Mallory work hard and fast.

A can of soda is found in Team Cardinal Sisters' trailer and placed on the table. They ask "Rose" one more time...and THIS time she hands them the clue!:

ROUTE INFO

AT LAST, THE FINISH LINE!!

Travel by taxi to the parking lot before old Seven Mile Bridge and travel across the boardwalk on tricycles to the FINISH LINE!!, the Pigeon Key Historic District.

The first team to check-in wins ONE MILLION DOLLARS!!!

GO GO GO!!!

As they catch a cab to the bridge, Team Trotters asks again...but "Miss Rose" says no. They are getting frustrated, so they go over to finished model to see where they went wrong. And it's the same issue as before: the table isn't set right. So...the dishes and condiments are set up..."Rose" looks...and she approves! They leave in second...and leave Gary & Mallory heartbroken.

OLD SEVEN MILE BRIDGE
MARATHON, FLORIDA, USA

As the sun starts to descend towards the Florida Keys' horizon, Kisha & Jen find the bridge and the adult-sized trikes they are to ride across on. Jen has no problem with the trike...but Kisha is struggling. Another taxi pulls up and out pours Team Trotters. They hop on their trikes and pedal like a million bucks were on the line! Kisha nearly veers off course, fighting against the gusts (and knocking the camera on her trike off kilter). She hops off and runs alongside the trike while "Flight Time" & "Big Easy" huff and puff and pedal on.

Back at the park, Team KY/Dad finish their trailer and ask for confirmation. And, on their FIRST TRY, "Rose" green-lights their way to the bridge. But...is it too little too late?

As they approach the "off ramp" for Pigeon Key, Kisha & Jen get a second wind and get back to pedalling. Herb & Nate pedal as hard as they can...but Herb believes the girls are just too far ahead for them to make up the time. "It's over," he says. But Nate wants them to push hard no matter what...and to "take it all in", meaning the sights.

FINISH LINE!!
PIGEON KEY HISTORICAL DISTRICT
PIGEON KEY, FLORIDA, USA

Over 2500 miles from where the eleven teams started their (second) trip around the world for a million dollars, eight teams line the way to Phil on the giant red platform. Amanda & Kris (Team Amandakris, 11th), Mel & Mike (Team West Hollywood, 10th), Jaime & Cara (Team Hollaback Girls, 9th), Margie & Luke (Team Hear My Song!, 8th), Ron & Christina (Team Who's Your Daddy?, 7th), Jet & Cord (Team Cowboy Bebop, 6th), Kent & Vyxsin (Team Dating Goths, 5th) and Zev & Justin (Team Puzzle Pieces, 4th) applaud as the cameras roll and the winning team comes into view, running down the ramp of the bridge, across the lawn and towards their ultimate reward. Phil, take it home:

"Five continents, twenty-three cities, forty-thousand miles...Kisha & Jen, you are the official winners of The Amazing Race!! And you have won the ONE MILLION DOLLARS!!!"

Despite not winning a single Leg throughout the Race, Team Cardinal Sisters won the only one that counted: the LAST one. They hug each other as the other teams applaud and Phil mentions that, for the second time ever and second time in a row, an all-female team has won the Race! They reiterate what they said on the bridge: "We're doing it for Mom." And what will they do for Mom now? "Everything!". Starting with starting her own business.

Here comes Team Trotters down the ramp and towards the platform. Phil officially declares "Flight Time" & "Big Easy" the "silver medalists" of this Race as they hug and congratulate the girls. They don't seem to mind being beaten by "a couple of girls" since they felt that Kisha & Jen were "consistent" and "never struggling". They had a heck of a time on this Race and they loved it.

(Later, they would go on to prove that NEITHER of them were "Smarter Than a 5th Grader"...though they did better than their three teammates at that.)

Team KY/Dad sort of knew they didn't have a chance but, as the sun started to sink into the sea, Gary & Mallory pedalled their trikes to the ramp and ran down to join the others as the Race's "Team #3". With high-fives to the other teams, they're happy to have done two Races back-to-back...and wouldn't mind a third. Gary appreciates Mallory "hanging out" with him...and Mallory hugs her special man. AWWWWW...GROUP HUG!!

Well,..."Unfinished Business" has been resolved. Three teams have completed the trip around the planet they failed to complete last time. And Kisha & Jen, who literally pissed away their shot last time, came home the winners! Group shot...big applause...one last hat throw by Cord...and...CUT! See ya for Amazing Race 19!
